I’ve just listened to The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile and 11.22.63. Loved them all!

What next please?

Thanks!

Sorry for jumping on the thread, but are Stephen King books hard to read? I mean like if you put it down for a couple of days would you be lost when you came back to it? I've always wanted to read them but have been told so many times they're hard to read. Also glad I saw this thread as I'm off to the library today and no idea what I was looking for 😂

Thebigblueballoon · 21/06/2023 09:25

Another vote for The Stand. Also Misery, Gerald’s Game and Pet Sematary.

ISaySteadyOn · 21/06/2023 09:29

@Gabby10 , I started with Carrie . It is short and easy to pick up and put down. Or as pp have said, short stories are good.

@ISaySteadyOn Thank you I'll have a look and see what I can find x

The Dead Zone is my favourite. Great film too!

Angelmonkey · 21/06/2023 09:38

Gwendys button box is excellent. If you enjoy his books, his son Joe Hill has written some brilliant books in the some genre

QuintanaRoo · 21/06/2023 09:39

The Stand is amazing, also loved Under the Dome and the bachman books.

FoFanta · 21/06/2023 09:41

His books are not in the slightest bit hard to read - the difficulty would be in being able to out it down and leave it for a couple of days. I am reading his latest "Fairy Tale" at the moment and it is fantastic. I read Carrie when I was 13, and I am going to be 50 this year - Stephen King remains one of the most reliable comforts of my adult life. Even his less good books will transport you for a few hours.

DorisElward · 21/06/2023 09:43

Surprised at the people recommending Under the Dome - I found it really disappointing.

Billy Summers was a real thriller. Mr Mercedes and the Long Walk already mentioned are also excellent.

Norugratsatall · 21/06/2023 09:47

Carrie
Cujo
Christine
The Shining

These are my favourite.

ElsaMars · 21/06/2023 09:47

I loved Cell, thought it was brilliant. Delores Clayborne (sp?) is great as are most of the others. I might pop out and buy the new one right now actually!

MadisonAvenue · 21/06/2023 09:48

Needful Things
Desperation
Insomnia
Carrie
The Shining
Pet Sematary
Thinner

PepeLePew · 21/06/2023 09:49

Under the Dome has the worst ending of any good book I've ever read. King is not great at endings but the brilliance of the rest of it makes that okay.

My personal favourite is The Stand. I also loved Misery and IT (several suspect scenes aside). The Long Walk and Carrie are outstanding from his earlier work. I liked The Institute from his recent work a lot. I'm a huge King fan - he's a consummate story teller and writes brilliantly about sadness and alienation.

I’m 53, my older sister secretly lent me Carrie when I was 10 (parents still thought I was reading Enid Blyton) and since then we’ve swapped Stephen King books on a regular basis.

Duma Key is one of my all time favourite books ever, I also love The Stand and IT, Billy Summers and Joyland and the Mr Mercedes trilogy are great too.

The long walk
Needful things

Cassie71 · 21/06/2023 11:14

Salem's Lot is my favourite. The long walk.

Same here! I absolutely love Duma Key, I was waiting for it to show on the list 😂

I also really like Bag of Bones and Desperation, to add on to the others everyone is recommending.

TC176 · 21/06/2023 11:23

Another vote for ‘Fairy Tale’ which is latest book. One of those stories where you want to keep reading, but don’t want it to end. I read it at Christmas and still miss the characters.
Dean Koontz has written some good stuff too.

Puppylucky · 21/06/2023 11:23

Gerald's Game is really good as are Christine and the Dead Zone. As someone said up thread I think King is really underrated as a writer about the human condition. Christine is a beautiful book about adolescent make friendship as well as being pretty scary whilst the Dead Zone is one of the saddest love stories (with a great ending for a change!) I've ever read. Even Gerald's Game is more than just a thrill read.

BoatsAndHoes · 21/06/2023 11:31

I've read them all and Needful Things is my absolute favourite. I've read it 3 times....! From a Buick 8 is also very good, as is Christine.

No, not at all. But maybe start with is short stories collections, Skeleton Crew is brilliant - Mrs Todd's Shortcut is probably my favourite story from that one. And Different Seasons which includes not only Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption but also The Body (which was adapted in to the film Stand By Me)

Saisong · 21/06/2023 11:47

Skeleton Crew has some of my favourite short stories ever. And I'm not big on some of SKs scarier books.

wiltshirelass1418 · 21/06/2023 11:50

I picked up The Institute from the library yesterday! Glad I did now!
