OMG Stop quoting the fucking OP already

That's it really.

Driving me batshit today. It's bad enough most days but for some reason today every thread I have been on is eleventy-billion pages longer than it should be because it's full of people quoting the original post and then adding a tiny comment.

Even worse people quoting the OP, responding to the OP which has moved on by miles.

But mostly people just quoting the OP.

WE KNOW WHAT YOU ARE ANSWERING. IT'S A GIVEN. PLEASE USE THE QUOTE ONLY WHEN YOU ARE REPLYING TO A DIFFERENT, SUB-QUESTION OR COMMENT, THANK YOU.

About as funny as a fucking fanny rash

You ought to work on those anger issues your have there.

saraclara · 21/06/2023 13:31

I've considered making the same OP many times. It drives me mad and I've failed to stop myself calling people out on it several times.

WE'RE ALL ANSWERING THE SAME QUESTION FFS! YOU DON'T NEED TO QUOTE IT AGAIN!

But still they do. And yes, always with a response that averages three lines..

BlackberrySky · 21/06/2023 13:41

Threads about the quote facility always fill up with tiresome jokers who don't seem to have noticed their hilarious "quote joke" has already been done to death. It's a shame because it really gets in the way. But anyway, OP, I agree that it serves no purpose.

MagicBullet · 21/06/2023 14:01

I know it wasn’t the point if your thread but a lot if those answers made me 😂😂😂
So thank you fur that.

(and you’re right but 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️)

TheMurderousGoose · 21/06/2023 14:06

I do wonder why someone quotes the opening post, 268 posts in, just to say 'yanbu OP',

Thanks for that thrilling addition, Amanda.

kitsuneghost · 21/06/2023 14:07

OK - quoting the OP for the first time was predictably boring
No need for EVERYONE to do it.

Well, you've just asked for it. It's a given on mumsnet that a thread complaining about people quoting posts becomes full of people quoting posts.

SlightlyJaded · 21/06/2023 14:19

Christ there are some miserable bastards on this thread

@Screwballs no it's not "all I have going on in my life". I have a lot of very awful stuff going on actually that I wouldn't wish on anyone. I am still allowed to be irritated by the little things for light relief.

OP posts:
BelindaBears · 21/06/2023 14:19

Is it the length of the posts that determines how many get on one page, or is it the number of posts? (E.g. new page every 20 posts.)

MyWishIsMyCommand · 21/06/2023 14:24

The number of posts. You can change that in the settings.

TheMurderousGoose · 21/06/2023 14:31

I like to have all posts on one page. That way, on the livelier threads, you get to read the full thing before it gets zapped. It's also easier to do a search and see if you're the first (or the fiftieth) person to make a particular suggestion.

juneybean · 21/06/2023 14:50

It's infuriating, particularly if the OP is extremely long!

it strikes me as an appropriate response to someone getting cross (kind of as a joke if I read the op right) to the way people choose to post on a social media site that we’re all supposed to be using for fun

life’s a lot easier when you realise that you generally can’t control others, and it’s often a bit weird to even try

BlockbusterVideoCard · 21/06/2023 16:23

I often quote in order to be able to refer to the post as I respond then I forget to delete it.

And so...? It still means the threads are eleventy-billion pages long, whatever your personal faux-reason is and everyone else's. It's ridiculous.

So what?

SoupDragon · 21/06/2023 16:38

I find it hard to understand why some people get so wound up about something you can easily just skim past. It really isn't difficult.

Wow! You're a tough cookie, aren't you?

SlipSlidinAway · 21/06/2023 16:51

Quoting the op clogs up threads which in turn promotes 'cancel the cheque' scenarios where people can't be bothered to wade through lots of unnecessary repetition and end up giving advice on situations that have already been resolved.

You can end up with a bad case of scroller’s thumb and it’s ALL THE FAULT OF THE QUOTERS

LOOKING AT YOU, PEOPLE

Shall we ask MN to ban quoting the opening post? I agree, soooo tedious.

Scroller’s thumb is a very serious condition affecting millions of people. It kills a total of 0 people a day.
