Anyone had an insect bite like this

Sorry for the gross feet photo!

I was bitten on Saturday on the front of my ankle and the top of my heel. I think they were mosquitos. They’re very itchy but haven’t scratched them. I’ve take antihistamines (piriton) and put cream on them.

Today my foot has come up like this. It’s not hot or particularly red. Just very tight and swollen.

Are we thinking infection or reaction? Or am I just being silly? But concerned about work tomorrow as I can’t fit it in any of my shoes!

I’d be getting that seen too. Keep your foot higher than your hip.

BlackeyedSusan · 19/06/2023 21:33

Wow. That's really swollen!

Poor you.

The6thQueen · 19/06/2023 21:34

I’ve had it raised all evening 😣

I've had half a golf ball or bit bigger sized lumps from mozzies etc in Canada, where you could see the edges of the reaction, but not a whole foot or hand swollen like yours. I would er on the side of caution and get some advice.

Chupyloo · 19/06/2023 21:35

when I’m bitten I swell up like that as I have Skeeter syndrome. I also get large marks on the skin that spread out from the bite area. I’m essentially allergic to mosquito saliva. Currently sporting 6 bites in different places after a walk yesterday so suffering quite a lot today

Baldieheid · 19/06/2023 21:35

You need that seen to. 111, then poss out of hours doc

areyouhavinglaugh · 19/06/2023 21:38

I was bitten by a sawfly or a horse fly a few weeks ago and had a huge fat knee for about a week! In uk

helpfulperson · 19/06/2023 21:38

Dealing with insect bites is going to be my mastermind subject!

As well as raising it you should take Ibuprofen if you can and put ice on it. Put something under the end of your mattress so it stays raised all night. And if it is still the same in the morning give your GP practice a phone - it's something a nurse practitioner can normally deal with. If there is any tracking up veins then 111 for out of hours.

MarigoldGlove · 19/06/2023 21:41

I got a ridiculously swollen hand last week.

It happened when I was walking the dog in a forest so I have no idea what happened to it. It was swollen to three times the size at its worst point. I couldn't get a GP appointment and 101 said to go the the pharmacist. Her eyes nearly popped out her head when she saw it. She told me to take ibuprofen. When I woke up on the third day it had started to go down.

MarigoldGlove · 19/06/2023 21:44

This is it on the morning of the second day. It got bigger that day but went down overnight on day two.

Keep the bite area clean with soap and water. Use an ice pack or cold compress to take the heat out and take a painkiller. Also take an anti-histamine like Piriton

SlipSlidinAway · 19/06/2023 21:52

Yes - bites on the ankle are a bugger, very painful and prone to lots of swelling. Just one of those things.

MargaretThursday · 19/06/2023 21:59

I've just had one like that. GP took one look and gave antibiotics.

RosesAndHellebores · 19/06/2023 22:00

Yep. Only need to worry if it turns red and the red starts travelling up your leg. As soon as that happens you need ABs. A&E nurse drew round my leg two inches above the red and said if the red crossed the line hoof it to a main A&E because IV ABs would be needed. It calmed down.

Florissante · 19/06/2023 22:01

Poor you. That looks awful. I hope the swelling soon goes down.

Blessedbethefruitz · 19/06/2023 22:02

@Chupyloo Is your allergy progressive? Mine got worse each time, massive red patches like an extra knee, before anaphylaxis last time. Only mosquitoes. I'm terrified to travel again for work.

@The6thQueen That is huge. I'd be getting that checked ASAP.

LizzieSiddal · 19/06/2023 22:03

It doesn’t look infected as it isn’t red anywhere and there’s no pus! (Dh recently had an infected bite and it was gross after 24 hours, Dr gave Antibiotics which worked very well.)

autieawesome · 19/06/2023 22:06

I've had horsefly bites similar

yaboreme · 19/06/2023 22:07

I was bitten by a horsefly and it looked the same. However, I itched mine and it became infect.

Do not scratch at all costs!!

fudgecat · 19/06/2023 22:10

Were you near a river/lake? Could well be a bite from a blandford fly. Nasty little buggers

Ahhhhhbisto · 19/06/2023 22:14

Yes me on my hand. I was sent to OHO by the pharmacy. Steroids, antihistamines and antibiotics and arm in sling for a tiny bite but big reaction.
Get that seen to OP.

The6thQueen · 19/06/2023 22:41

Thanks for the advice all. It’s cleaned and elevated. Will try to see the nurse tomorrow, or the pharmacist if it hasn’t deflated at all!

Malbecmoron · 19/06/2023 22:45

That’s what happens to me when I get bitten by a mosquito. Anti histamine helps a little.

VenusStarr · 19/06/2023 22:56

I've had this before. Looks like you've got cellulitis. I needed antibiotics to sort it.

StillMedusa · 19/06/2023 23:23

It looks like a Blandford fly bite to me... my ankle looked identical 2 weeks ago and still itches now!
They are tiny midge sized flies , rampant in May and June and they bite low to the ground. They can turn into nasty wounds needing antibiotics but usually they are just very itchy, swell up massively and go down over a few days.

I got bitten both sides and my ankle and foot turned into a football, but it only took 4 days to shrink again :)
