Guess what packed lunch item got confiscated and handed to me at the end of the day?

DD aged 8 almost 9 (end of July), Year 4. Has SN incase it's relevant.

Packed lunch of:

Leftover Chicken in a white roll
2 finger kitkat
Sliced up grapes
Cucumber Sticks
Babybel
Carton of juice
Dip Pot of ketchup (for the sandwich)

Usually school don’t take items off children because the HT says she used to send her own DC to primary school with packed lunches and she hated having stuff taken from their lunch boxes – it’s a mainstream LA primary but higher than average number of SN/EHCPs according to most recent ofsted (December 22) so they’re generally understanding about fussiness/SN issues. DD has only once before had something confiscated.

So what did the lunch staff take issue with from DDs lunch?

Ugh. I sympathise. My DS is having a horrible time at school, dyslexic and the teacher has picked a 400 page, 80 chapter book for them all to read for Book Week (and asked for 17 euro for it.) Won't deal with the playground bullying he's facing or his reading issues but didn't let him eat the yogurt and cherry pot he made for himself that morning. I swear to god she is a sadist.

Toddlerteaplease · 19/06/2023 19:32

Did they replace her sandwich with something equally filling? I'd have been furious if they'd confiscated the most substantial part of my child's lunch.

StarDolphins · 19/06/2023 19:38

This is outrageous. School should not be taking anything from a lunch unless it is an allergen risk.

I would not be happy with a school policing what food I give my child.

Absolutely ridiculous. I remember my child getting told off for having chocolate cake in packed lunch when he was sitting next to children eating school dinner with chocolate crunch and chocolate custard. It's patronising to parents. If only they would butt out and focus on education which is what they are paid to do!

LakeTiticaca · 19/06/2023 19:40

Since when did schools start acting like the Gestapo? Who gave them the right to police children's lunchboxes?

This.
They took the most filling part!

I find that really hard to believe. What school is policing salt levels? No one has time to calculate the sodium content of each item of each child's lunch. Maybe banning crisps, but a chicken sandwich? Very hard to believe this really happened.

Please don't believe everything you read about schools on here.

Yawn.

It didn't. It's just a joke to get people frothing about teachers. And of course it worked.

Or much else if it comes to it !
I'm convinced at least half the stuff on here is fiction

eewno · 19/06/2023 19:55

Yes not all schools are bad. My DCs head told all staff in a meeting that DC wasn't to be challenged on the contents of her lunch box, and she hasn't.

I do believe there will be some schools and staff members who won't deal with this sort of thing appropriately.

The school are idiots. And they are the ones responsible for educating our kids.

Tbh after wasting 22 years of my life in healthcare nothing surprises me with adult critical thinking skills.

Its in the minus integers.

Theres a reason why they put labels on laundry detergent telling you not to drink it.

Quiverer · 19/06/2023 20:10

Please tell us you've asked the school WTF, OP?

MrTiddlesTheCat · 19/06/2023 20:14

One time my DD had a homemade scone taken off her. I pointed out that school rules allowed for a piece of cake or a couple of biscuits. Only to be told that yes, but it has to be something healthy like flapjack or digestives. How on earth were they defining 'healthy'? Jaffa cakes have less fat and sugar than digestives and flapjacks have more sugar than Tate and Lyle.

Mikimoto · 19/06/2023 20:18

So if you know the school check, why give the kid a shit lunch to start with?

TheCheeseTray · 19/06/2023 20:23

I call BS

ejbaxa · 19/06/2023 20:27

How bloody ridiculous

WiddlinDiddlin · 19/06/2023 20:33

That is insane - are you sure thats right, someones not got crossed wires and made some bollocks up?

Theres less than half a gram of salt in most white rolls and if by 'left over chicken' you mean from a chicken you roasted... unless you specifically added salt theres hardly any in that either.

Makes no sense at all!

Just say what it was. This isn’t interesting enough for pages of guesses.

I like the way it's written, feels so unique to the usual MN thread

Shakirasma · 19/06/2023 20:35

Speaking as a primary school lunchtime supervisor, this is so ridiculous I'm having trouble believing it.

On a professional level, we are not dieticians and have no expertise in knowing the nutritional content of all possible lunchbox foods.

On a personal level, we do not give a toss what is in your childs lunchbox, as long as its nut free.

Luxell934 · 19/06/2023 20:36

No head, teacher or dinner lady has the time to go around calculating salt content of children's lunchboxes. There are hundreds of children. At most our head would walk around and say "remember healthy food only" to the packed lunch kids whilst the school dinner kids ate brownies for dessert 😂But certainly never took any food of any child.

Ahsoka2001 · 19/06/2023 20:36

riotlady · 19/06/2023 17:58

Kitkat or juice? We wouldn’t be allowed either of those at DDs school

Banning juice is so dumb when it counts as one of your five a day, it's not like it's Fanta

Lacucuracha · 19/06/2023 20:41

I think the confiscator fancied a mini chicken sub roll and ate it.
