Guess what packed lunch item got confiscated and handed to me at the end of the day?

DD aged 8 almost 9 (end of July), Year 4. Has SN incase it's relevant.

Packed lunch of:

Leftover Chicken in a white roll
2 finger kitkat
Sliced up grapes
Cucumber Sticks
Babybel
Carton of juice
Dip Pot of ketchup (for the sandwich)

Usually school don’t take items off children because the HT says she used to send her own DC to primary school with packed lunches and she hated having stuff taken from their lunch boxes – it’s a mainstream LA primary but higher than average number of SN/EHCPs according to most recent ofsted (December 22) so they’re generally understanding about fussiness/SN issues. DD has only once before had something confiscated.

So what did the lunch staff take issue with from DDs lunch?

Christ I'm glad I'm past the school years stage!

Hats off to you younger mums, I don't know how you keep up with it all....or keep your cool!

This!

DNAwrangler · 19/06/2023 18:09

how does confiscating a chicken roll reduce the salt content of the rest?! Very weird.

Tudorfish · 19/06/2023 18:10

That doesn't make sense. The chicken on a roll is the source of protein. Surely they'd take away the juice and kitkat first.

Although given how clueless most school staff seem to be about nutrition ...

I think unless there's a a happy meal in there are nothing but chocolate and a share bag of crisps schools should mtob

I'm so glad mine don't go to some of the utterly bonkers schools that come up on here

DyslexicPoster · 19/06/2023 18:12

Oh I love it when people post to say the OPs post is pointless/ stupid / not high brow enough.

I'm going to guess unless you made your own sourdough roll and the rest of the contents were from the waitress Duchy range it should all have been banned. I personally grow everything I feed my child in my middle class organic garden in the Surrey Hills over looking a site of special scientific interest.

So I hope that makes you feel bad OP. Also, I took minutes of my life to reply but I feel strongly that your post is pointless silly and boring. Because I'm lovely like that.

Please feel free to pile onto me pointing out my spelling grammar. I love that too! Isn't MN a lovely place to come and share?

Just say what it was. This isn’t interesting enough for pages of guesses.

This 😂

WoolyAndYug · 19/06/2023 18:13

Schools shouldn't be taking away any part of a child's lunch it's a horrible message to send to a child. They should be instead speaking to the parents and only doing something extreme like confiscating food if rules are repeatedly flouted and there are no factors at home causing it.

I'm sorry this happened to your child. I do feel that schools really are going downhill in many ways.

WonderDays · 19/06/2023 18:15

That’s crazy, why didn’t they take some of the junk?

Username917778 · 19/06/2023 18:17

This is wild! Why are they able to dictate what's being eaten and confiscate food? Is this a special school/different country? I'm in Scotland and I could send a box full chocolate and crisps if I was so inclined.

GottaGirlcrush · 19/06/2023 18:18

So the ketchup was unused too

Only salt item left was babybel!

SeeingSpots · 19/06/2023 18:20

So to reduce the amount of salt in the meal they took away the sandwich which was the main part of the meal? Nope sorry that sounds like complete nonsense and makes absolutely no sense? Confused

pastypirate · 19/06/2023 18:20

I cannot be effed with the packed lunch police. Woe betide dd2 primary if they do this.

TwoFluffyDogsOnMyBed · 19/06/2023 18:21

Neverinamonthofsundays · 19/06/2023 18:07

You mean sugar surely? Theres a lot of sugar in a white bread roll as is in fact most of his lunch. Im not seeing salt.

There are simple carbohydrates, not sugar. Little difference but most kids eat white bread.

PoppyPansyCampion · 19/06/2023 18:22

And people wonder why the birthrate is dropping! I wouldn't have kids now. ( I know, a million reasons but this sort of thing is one of the reasons why I wouldn't have kids in school now, and who can afford to home educate?!)

Yes I just meant it was more a sugar based lunch than a salt based one and wondered if the op meant to say sugar instead.

StrayGoose · 19/06/2023 18:22

I don't believe they did this. It makes zero sense.

FlippyFloppyFlappy · 19/06/2023 18:23

“This is tedious” blah blah, so are you, just scroll back out ffs 🙄

Tg2023 · 19/06/2023 18:23

I'd go mental at the school, How dare they take your DD's main food item (a good source of protein) that means all she's had to eat is a 2 fingered kitkat, a few grapes, a few slices of cucumber & a babybel. The poor girl will be so hungry.

FloorWipes · 19/06/2023 18:24

How bizarre. What member of staff was responsible for this baffling event? How did you manage to respond in a respectful manner to such a high level of idiocy?

ButterCrackers · 19/06/2023 18:26

How ridiculous. Send them a bill for the cost of the sandwich ingredients. If they don’t pay up you’ll go to the police to report theft.

INamechangedForThisMadness · 19/06/2023 18:26

Who are these dieticians working in schools?

Do they study a kid's entire week of food to see how this one meal fits into their diet as a whole?

I can understand confiscating a sharing bag of haribo, or having a word if the kid is bringing a tube of Pringles only every day, but that's utterly bonkers.

MrsWombat · 19/06/2023 18:27

I would find out from school what actually happened, but yes that is bonkers.

INamechangedForThisMadness · 19/06/2023 18:27

Did they take samples of the sandwich and analyse the micronutrient content (because home cooked chicken could have a lot of variability)?

Who are these people? And who do they think they are?!

nettie434 · 19/06/2023 18:28

Absolutely ridiculous when the sandwich was the main part of the lunch. What nutrition training do they have to qualify them to decide what is in/out of a lunch box?

Giselletheunicorn · 19/06/2023 18:28

The policing of lunchboxes is bloody stupid to be honest...So long as people follow rules about nut free and don't basically tip a tin of Quality Street in there, why does it matter if a kid has a slightly salty snack one day or a slightly processed one? My DS's school has a very mixed catchment and there are families struggling to make ends meet at the moment. Schools need to be focusing on the bigger picture going on with many families....
