Guess what packed lunch item got confiscated and handed to me at the end of the day?

DD aged 8 almost 9 (end of July), Year 4. Has SN incase it's relevant.

Packed lunch of:

Leftover Chicken in a white roll
2 finger kitkat
Sliced up grapes
Cucumber Sticks
Babybel
Carton of juice
Dip Pot of ketchup (for the sandwich)

Usually school don’t take items off children because the HT says she used to send her own DC to primary school with packed lunches and she hated having stuff taken from their lunch boxes – it’s a mainstream LA primary but higher than average number of SN/EHCPs according to most recent ofsted (December 22) so they’re generally understanding about fussiness/SN issues. DD has only once before had something confiscated.

So what did the lunch staff take issue with from DDs lunch?

This could become a regular MN game.

GottaGirlcrush · 19/06/2023 18:56

Mumsnet seems to be full of teachers.....can any shed some light on this?

It was the roll with the chicken still in it

Because of too much salt in the rest of the lunch

Blimey.

And what did they offer in place of the chicken roll?? Ie, the main carb and protein apart of your dd's lunch

part, no apart

NoSquirrels · 19/06/2023 18:59

What was the ‘too much salt’ in the other parts of the lunch that they were objecting to? The Babybel?

Wtf?! That's ridiculous.

Mariposa26 · 19/06/2023 18:59

Schools seem to have way too much power these days. It’s mad.

LinMortisanass · 19/06/2023 18:59

I think it was the chicken roll.
Do I win a prize?

so the main part of the lunch?
I would be asking them all to list what they ate for lunch. Fuckers.

Partyofeight · 19/06/2023 19:05

I would have been fuming!! Have you seen the crap the schools feed the kids for school dinners!? That's ridiculous.

3AndStopping · 19/06/2023 19:05

Ffs. Too much salt 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄 Did they actually take the roll away before she had a chance to eat it? Everyday dd’s have the same lunch:

Sandwich marmite/cheese
yogurt tube
crisps
cucumber
apple

it’s fine. I’m sure people will tear the arse out of a pack of crisps or a yogurt tube ‘full of sugar’ but let’s be realistic… they’re kids. It’s. Bloody. Fine. This would piss me off irrationally.

TooJoy · 19/06/2023 19:07

This is ridiculous.

The lunch was absolutely fine and nothing needed confiscating.

Have they sent a list of suitable items children can have?

I would 100% complain about this as this is going to cause an unhealthy relationship with food.

I do get why people police lunch boxes. In my school we often have kids coming in with energy drinks or a 3 day old kebab. Once we had someone come in with half a rich tea biscuit, he was a 15 year old growing boy and had half a biscuit to keep him full.

Just say what it was. This isn’t interesting enough for pages of guesses.

It is such a shame that MN have this thing where if you click on a thread you HAVE to post and can't just leave it if it is of no interest to you.

OhComeOnFFS · 19/06/2023 19:12

I'd be furious about them taking anything off my child as long as it wasn't something that was on a list sent out beforehand, but particularly the sandwich.

Eh?

It's just as well my son has grown up because I would have gone absolutely mental.

SunIsShininInTheSky · 19/06/2023 19:19

Carton of juice? It's water only at our school, to be fair fresh fruit juice is really bad for teeth, I assume you mean a capri-sun or similar, not the best choice.

What??? So what did your child actually eat for lunch? They shouldn't be touching her sandwich anyway, that is utterly mental.

ArtixLynx · 19/06/2023 19:22

my DS has ARFID amongst his other issues.

I basically told them if they touched his lunch again (packed lunch of foods he eats, same lunch every day) that i'd be picking him up at lunch, feeding him on the car park, and then handing him back. (they backed down)

Its absolute bollocks, they need to keep their hands off our kids food.

Yet here you are......interested!

Luhou · 19/06/2023 19:27

I would be furious. That is a balanced lunch. I don't understand why they wouldnt of taken the ketchup, if this was their concern, as they've made the ketchup void without the sandwich. That's not enough lunch, with the roll. I have a DD 2.5 and had no idea schools confiscate lunch items....shocked me!

Itsbeennice · 19/06/2023 19:28

But there wouldn’t be an inordinate amount of salt in the chicken sandwich, surely?

Caterina99 · 19/06/2023 19:29

I mean yes it could be brown or wholemeal bread, but I fail to see the issue with a chicken sandwich! Presumably it’s one of the healthier sandwiches you can have? (clearly someone is going to now tell me it’s akin to feeding my kids crack)

If it was a Nutella sandwich, or jam then maybe? But roast chicken? Madness!

RaraRachael · 19/06/2023 19:30

Who are the people who make these judgements on the contents of kids' packed lunches.
Thankfully it doesn't happen at any school I've worked in as there would be uproar from parents.

Toddlerteaplease · 19/06/2023 19:30

Grapes.
