Missing Titanic submarine

1000 replies

Twinklesgolden · 19/06/2023 17:50

How horrifying that a submarine carrying 5 people has gone missing. Apparently there’s only 96 hours of air on the submarine when it sets off.

The people on board must be terrified!

It's absolutely ghoulish on many levels that people are paying vast sums to go and poke around what is essentially a graveyard. I am sympathetic to the people who are trapped but I think these sorts of trips should be banned.

I've been to the seafloor at 2000 m in Alvin, the US research sub, and Alvin (at least the old version, there is a new one now) carries weights that it releases in order to resurface. I assume this sub has that option too. I really hope they'll get back up to the surface and that they will be found. Marine scientists and oceanographers will be able to narrow down the search area based on their knowledge of ocean currents and the recent weather at least to some degree.

wow, how did it feel inside? What’s your gut instinct on what might be a plausible outcome?

MotherofGorgons · 19/06/2023 21:17

I have always wanted to go down in a submersible or a submarine. ( not to gawk at disaster sites, just the general ocean) I am not claustrophobic. Think I won't now.

GuinnessBird · 19/06/2023 21:18

Explosive decompression would be a hell of a way to go.

YouLittlePlonka · 19/06/2023 21:20

It's history. Personally I would absolutely LOVE to see the shipwreck, but I'd be too petrified to go in one of those things even if I was minted. It's okay to be naturally curious about one of the biggest disasters of the 20th century. Imagine how fascinating it would be to see? They're going (or were going to) visit from a respectful distance I'm sure they weren't planning to nick a load of old silverware and jewellery.

I was always surprised at how much James Cameron just popped down there though, I'd assume you need clearance or something?

I hope they're found safe and well x

ferntwist · 19/06/2023 21:23

Just heartbreaking. I can’t stop checking updates. Praying for a miracle conclusion

So you don’t even see anything you couldn’t see on a video on the surface?! What’s the point?!

ImDuranDuran · 19/06/2023 21:27

Those saying it's ghoulish to visit such a site, do you feel the same about Ground Zero in NYC, Auschwitz etc?

I'm genuinely interested to know how you feel; to be honest I've never felt any urge to visit such places but they obviously provoke a fascination in people about death and tragedy.

I don't doubt that many people visit these places to pay their respects but there is obviously a huge number of visitors who go to satisfy their curiosity (or ghoulish tendencies).

CathyorClaire · 19/06/2023 21:27

I was under the obviously naïve impression that trips to the Titanic were made on purely scientific grounds.

Quite surprised to see that tourist trips to a fast disintegrating underwater graveyard are a thing but even so I'm absolutely hoping they'll be returned safely.

Lost and trapped underwater is too unbearably horrific to think about.

It riled me that I never saw a post about the migrant ship last week I guess. Maybe I missed it…

You could have started one.

Igneococcus · 19/06/2023 21:33

It was fantastic and I would do it again @PurposefulBear but it was in a dedicated research sub launched from and recovered by a ship build for this purpose with an experienced crew, a fantastic captain and PIs with a lot of experience of working at sea. The sub was checked over every time it came up and again before it went down and there were divers checking it again when it was put into the water. There were so many safety checks.
We went down to take data readings and samples (at the time with only one arm, the new Alvin has two) and there was so much stuff to do and to look at I had no time to be scared or worried.
I don't know this sub at all, so I wouldn't want to speculate. I get the feeling though there wasn't the same dedication to safety as the Alvin crew has.

TheTERFnextDoor · 19/06/2023 21:34

Where can I watch the press conference?

I often think about Harrison Okene and if others had the same experience. We generally think that when a ship goes down the passengers drown fairly quickly. His ordeal is both harrowing and amazing, but does make you think about those who might not have been found, and waited like he did. It is horrible to consider, I hope those passengers in the sub are found safe soon.

topnoddy · 19/06/2023 21:40

The good old BBC are posting a load of stating the bleeding obvious quotes from "experts" one of which says "we don't know where the sub is" .

No shit Sherlock

But Auschwitz and Ground Zero are now museums and sites where one can go and be educated about the atrocities that happened there. There are many Titanic focused museums or sections of Museums which exist for educational purposes and show items from the ship.

There is something extra to going down and seeing the wreckage as it serves no additional purpose other than to say "I've been".

The other sites may well be the original locations for the atrocities, but they have become educational establishments for future generations.

Skinnermarink · 19/06/2023 21:41

I can’t find this press conference either.

The press conference is available on BBC News.

I can't believe people pay a quarter of a million to give up all control (they're bolted in; you can't open it from the inside) and go to the depths of the ocean in such a small space with strangers ... knowing if something goes wrong, a very small window to fix it or else death!

Horrifying way to go!

Skinnermarink · 19/06/2023 21:46

God they’d not got too far into it when whatever went wrong occurred then. Less than two hours.

Yes there is a porthole

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 19/06/2023 21:47

Yes there is a porthole

And what exactly can you see out of it at that depth I wonder

YoSof · 19/06/2023 21:52

I don’t get the fascination, and you could offer me billions and I still wouldn’t get in a submersible like that one, but I am genuinely hoping that they are found on the surface shortly. There is speculation that it could have become stuck in the wreckage, and it is purely speculation because nobody knows what has happened obviously, but I will go to bed thinking of those on board and hoping for positive news in the morning.

I can’t think of a more horrific situation to be in.

Hocuspocusnonsense · 19/06/2023 21:54

Just reading this makes me feel panicky. My idea of hell.

There is something SO creepy about this. The Titanic adding another five lost souls to its graveyard. Creeps me out.

Hope they manage to recover the submarine before it becomes part of the wreckage.

ZebraDilemma · 19/06/2023 21:54

YoSof · 19/06/2023 18:19

This is just horrific, and if it can’t be located I do hope there’s a problem with the oxygen and that they are all unaware of what’s happening.

Crikey, just hope for rescue. Suffocation sounds appalling.
