Missing Titanic submarine

How horrifying that a submarine carrying 5 people has gone missing. Apparently there’s only 96 hours of air on the submarine when it sets off.

The people on board must be terrified!

I am very conflicted about this . While on the one hand I am horrified at the thought of the passengers trapped in that tiny space, all well aware that the clock is ticking and that the likelihood of their rescue diminishes by the minute, I am also also aware of the extraordinary resources being poured into their rescue, the concern voiced over them as individuals, their lives and achievements being recognised. And I and can’t help comparing it with the situation in the med last week when well over 500 people, many of them children , also died at sea in equally horrendous circumstances. A tragedy which by all accounts could have had a completely different outcome had even a small effort been made to rescue them.

Their names known only to god.

I hear you on this.Tbh I never start threads on migrants as it results in a horrible fight on MN. And I am a migrant myself so it brings back memories I would rather not have raked up.

But I felt for them and agree it is a very unequal world. Even on that migrant boat the Pakistanis suffered most because they were sent to the hold.

Of course I’m joking.

I find it bizarre that this is the top thread on Mumsnet, and was plastered all over the worlds papers.

I think it’s because there are some events that the average person struggles to wrap their head around. To be trapped in a tiny vessel under the sea, slowly suffocating to death is the stuff of nightmares. Most people can fathom murders, death by drowning, fire etc (all still incredibly horrible and distressing, I am not minimising those types of death - just stating that they are a more common occurrence). Death by suffocation, potentially 2 miles below sea, with nothing but dark ocean on all sides of you, could very quickly cause a person to go mad. There is no physiological testing or exercise on earth that could prepare the average person for the reality of that.

I think it's more nuanced than that. Neither the Thai footballers nor the Chilean miners were rich, but they gripped the world headlines for days. The unusual always gets more attention, especially if it plays to atavistic fears

Agree with this. Interest was very high at the time and after - with documentaries

Rich people engaging in risky behaviour facilitated by their wealth is nothing new.

Something to joke about? Well tell me who is laughing. Making sarcastic comments and jokes when five people are going through something so awful is disgusting. You should be ashamed of yourself.

StevieNicksfan · 20/06/2023 09:54

@viques I feel exactly the same.

CrunchyCarrot · 20/06/2023 09:55

Some of this reminds me of the trapped Chilean miners back in 2010. They were rescued against incredible odds. That was all over the news for 69 days!

Kabbalah · 20/06/2023 09:57

I never understood the fascination with the wreck of an antique ship. It’s morbid and distasteful.

The Thai children was a world focus and effort. Divers from U.K. risked their lives and Aus Dr did the anaesthetic. Loads more I’m sure. Truly heroic.

Mylifeislikeaboatrace · 20/06/2023 09:58

I hope the the sub and passengers are found safely. A harsh lesson needs to be learnt from this, this post is probably going to be deleted BUT... the ship is a grave site for hundreds of people, dh lost two young relatives, plus two who were on board but thankfully survived. It should be left alone and not a, more money than sense, tourist site.
Flame me I don't care, I'm not coming back as it's made me so angry. So many idiots thinking they can interfere with these sites. It's like grave robbing, how many people on here would be okay with their loved ones graves being dug up 'because we need to know / curious?
Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

Rich people engaging in risky behaviour facilitated by their wealth is nothing new.

One of those people is Paul Henry Nargeolet, a French explorer who has been on countless Titanic missions to both map the ship and retrieve artifacts. He was in the Navy for 20 yrs as a younger man. So he's not just an self-indulgent billionaire. He's led 30 expeditions to the Titanic and is the world expert on the wreckage.

FuckTheLemonsandBail · 20/06/2023 10:00

I'm kinda horrified at the idea that this existed in the first place. It feels ghoulish. But then, I'm fine with the fact that tourists can go visit places like Auschwitz. I guess cos I feel like people can learn from the latter, whereas this visiting the Titanic is purely to satisfy curiosity.

The vessel can't be opened even if they surface, from the inside. People are bolted in. Horrifying.

I don’t see why anyone should flame your post. You’re talking sense.

Doopersuper · 20/06/2023 10:03

It will either be found bobbing on the ocean surface or it won’t be found. My thoughts are with the families. Those who took part would have been made aware that there was no way of saving them at those depths if anything went wrong and they chose to continue. It’s very sad for all involved.

And what does being a world expert on the Titanic actually achieve? Why do artifacts need to be retrieved? Just because something can be done doesn't mean it should be.

I think the point people are making though is why on earth is it necessary to conduct 30 manned expeditions to a ship wreck?

Presumably it can be mapped/explored with unmanned vessels so why risk life and limb for a look through a porthole?

It was a ship that a tragedy occurred on. It's not some great mystery of the universe.

I also disagree with space tourism. It'll just be something else for us to pollute and make a mess of.

Are you being sarcastic?

It's a horrible situation for those 5 people but there are dreadful.things going on around the world affecting far more people

I'm sure the billionaires on board would give every penny if it meant they would survive. They need to throw every penny at this and worry about the money later.

The miners were at work- not totally sure on the supply chain but at a wild guess they work in dangerous conditions to provide other countries with cheap resources. The footballers were trapped following a freak storm, I'm not sure the level of risk this activity would have without unpredictable weather but they were children and from what was reported didn't seem to be aware of or able to make an informed decisions on the risk.

Not comparable really to million and billionaires choosing to and paying an obsence amount to pursue this despite being made aware of the risks. And yes if it was a reckless activity conducted by others people wouldn't be as bothered.

The 19 yr old was probably persuaded by his father. Who must now be consumed with guilt. Truly horrible.

You are assuming facts not in evidence. You have no idea whose idea it was.

quitezen · 20/06/2023 10:07

I've already posted but the only 'comfort' is that the passengers must have had nerves of steel to step foot inside the submersible in the first place, especially people like explorer Hamish Harding. Of course they must be dismayed, all the same, if they are trapped with no hope of rescue, but they will all have read and signed the disclaimer where death is mentioned, more than once, as possible outcome.

That depends entirely whose money is being thrown at it. I don't want my taxes being spent on this unless it is going to be repaid, whether they are rescued or not.

Amethystdorn77 · 20/06/2023 10:08

I'm sorry but isn't it about time this place was classed as a grave site so many people lost there lives the wreck as been laid there what over 100 years ,
People with more money than common sense that have paid thousands to crawl into a sardine can to go look at something we're hundreds of people lost there lives ....

Place silly games win silly prizes
I have no sympathy for fools it states the sub is controlled by a modified games controller

19 years old is hardly a "child".

Agree.

The horror in their minds now, if they still are alive, doesn't bear thinking about.
