Missing Titanic submarine

How horrifying that a submarine carrying 5 people has gone missing. Apparently there’s only 96 hours of air on the submarine when it sets off.

The people on board must be terrified!

The pressure at that depth is immensely greater than at sea level. This is not a case of Apollo 13 and brave passengers rigging up a solution. If the sub developed a crack or something, it basically would have exploded. Plus it's very cold down there.

This is a disaster for those poor people.

And yes, hyperthermia. How can you mitigate against that if the power has gone?

Topseyt123 · 19/06/2023 18:48

This is nightmarish. I do hope that they can be found and brought to the surface in time. Somehow!

I do have some doubts as to how ethical this type of "tourism" is. I'm quite interested in the Titanic and its story, and think that submersibles going down to it for the sake of preserving or documenting an important piece of maritime history is a good thing, but just taking members of the public (albeit pretty wealthy ones) who just want to go sightseeing should perhaps be reconsidered. Someone called it ghoulish. Perhaps. I'd certainly call it voyeuristic and verging on disrespectful to those who died.

I agree with this. Some things are better left alone, especially if there is an element of danger involved. Awful for the people however and I hope there is a good outcome.

YoSof · 19/06/2023 22:43

The gentleman I saw on Twitter earlier was part of the same expedition last year - I am not sure if he was on board the mothership or in the submersible and it went missing for 2.5 hours then, but they were still able to communicate with the “lost” submersible. The mothership apparently blocked the internet so that nobody on board could post/communicate anything about it.

It seems like such a basic instrument for such a dangerous dive.

I remember that rescue too @MostlyHuman. Wasn't there sharks swimming around the wreck too? I vaguely remember that one brushed past him.

I don't remember the sharks, but it's definitely a possibility. I am terrified of being underwater (did scuba to get over it, but it didn't work), so I'm afraid all I could think of was the depth of the water he was in. I kept forgetting to breath while I watched!

Igneococcus · 19/06/2023 22:45

Yes, there was a lot of life where I dived @PurposefulBear but we specifically went to a geothermal area. There were lots of deep sea hydrothermal vents with tubeworms around them (in the Pacific, that Atlantic and Indian Ocean vent systems usually have gazillions of shrimp around the vents, not worms), there were also crabs and snails and fish, lots of bioluminescence on the way down, and a pod of pilot whales came to check us out while we were still bopping on the surface. Away from the geothermal areas, which are sites of primary production due to the microbes living there and can support more life, the seafloor is emptier.

SilentHedges · 19/06/2023 22:47

Greatbigteeth · 19/06/2023 21:25

So you don’t even see anything you couldn’t see on a video on the surface?! What’s the point?!

There is one very small window according to several articles. Otherwise, yes, it would be pointless just to view surroundings on a screen https://www.geekwire.com/2021/oceangate-gets-titan-sub-ready-begin-expedition-titanic-shipwreck/

Aside, I so so hope they are rescued.

HereComesMaleficent · 19/06/2023 22:48

So options are;

1: it's resurfaced and bobbing in the sea somewhere waiting to be found.

2: it's floating about in the depths of the ocean, running out of oxygen on board.

3: It's descended too deep and been crushed like a coke can.

I mean, it's not looking good options wise.

How terrible, imagine being stuck in a tin can knowing your oxygen will run out, your going to die there and nobody will find you or see you ever again. 😳😬 It's the stuff of nightmares.

TokyoSushi · 19/06/2023 22:50

I don't really have anything useful to add but if it is just drifting around at the bottom of the ocean somewhere, how absolutely horrific for all involved.

SoonToBeinSpotlight · 19/06/2023 22:50

I don't want anybody to suffer or worse, due. I hope very much they survive.

However, I find it disturbing the inordinate attention and efforts of multiple governments to spend millions trying to rescue a very few people, who voluntarily have put their lives in grave danger at huge cost, purely for their own entertainment.....

.... when contrasted with the thousands who die in seas who are desperately trying to seek asylum, have no choice, and are sometimes not rescued even when the coast guards know where they are and could pick them up with no problem.....

I don't think these billionaires' lives should be worth more, nor would their deaths be more horrifying or deserve more attention.

Startyabastard · 19/06/2023 22:54

BillyNoM8s · 19/06/2023 18:04

These things should be tethered to something. If that's not feasible then people just shouldn't be allowed to get in them for fun. I can imagine nothing worse and you'd never get me in such a vessel.

I wouldn't go to space either.

Hopefully they're found.

I think exactly like this.
I can bet alot of what they paid for was insurance.
Must be horrifically scary. 😖

I do somewhat agree that the organisers of truly frivolous adventures, such as this, should have to sign something to state that they acknowledge public resources won't be used to rescue them if it all goes shit shaped.

There's bugger all reason anyone needs to go poking around down there.

Or, these million and billionaires should be forced to set up a rescue fund deposit for such circs, before they descend/ascend sea or space.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 19/06/2023 22:58

Didn't they say that there was 5 on board and they were all crew?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 19/06/2023 22:59

Or maybe they just used the word crew to mean everyone, rather than staff and tourists etc.

BillyNoM8s · 19/06/2023 23:02

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 19/06/2023 22:58

No they aren't all staff. Just 1 I think.

LobeliaSackville · 19/06/2023 23:02

I don't see how they could be rescued. There aren't many vessels that can submerge to those depths and even if they were able to locate them, how would they lift it? Most deep sea submersibles are fairly small. They are not like navy submarines.

This is a case of having more money than sense. The article linked earlier makes it very clear this was a very sketchy operation.

Apparently insurance not included in the ticket price according to the BBC.

It's just on Sky News now, there's 5 on board, one of whom is the founder of the company running the trip and another is a British billionaire.

CeriB82 · 19/06/2023 23:06

Some things should be left alone and titanic is one. Shes been gone for over 100 years. Would start digging up a grave from 1914? No, so this is no difference.

I doubt the trip would be insurable, from moment the hatches sealed until they reopened.

I don't imagine it's insurable tbh. You pays your money, you takes your choice.

Billionaires are very often the people who fund scientific research. A lot of research projects and new inventions wouldn't take place at all without wealthy philanthropists.

TokyoSushi · 19/06/2023 23:09

Apparently the billionaire has also been in a Jeff Bezos space craft.

Huh? If it was a secret mission then they just wouldn't have bothered mentioning it was "missing" in the first place Confused

And to think what we would not have in our lives if it weren't for them, no not in all cases but when I get a 'punish the rich' feeling from others I think what luxuries do people have because of them?

Mind you just because humans can explore everywhere doesn't mean we should, sad for them and their families but humans need to stop
