Boris stands down as MP with immediate effect part 3

DuncinToffee · 18/06/2023 16:56

Tomorrow is the Commons vote on the Privileges Committee's findings that Boris Johnson deliberately misled Parliament over Downing Street parties during lockdown

The vote is a free vote rather than being whipped either way. Tories have been told that the vote will be a one-line whip, meaning they will not be obliged to participate.

Boris Johnson is believed to have advised his backers to not vote against it.

Michael Gove confirmed on live tv that he will abstain

Tobias Elwood has u-turned on abstaining after hearing stories from voters

Rishi Sunak, who knows

It must be so sweet for MPs to really be able to say what they think about Johnson at last.

DuncinToffee · 19/06/2023 20:13

"People listened to Boris Johnson on the telly & took from him what the rules were as the primary message giver... so the idea he didn't understand the regulations... means he's either lying or he's thick... those two things are not mutually exclusive"

Jess Phillips

That along with Butler’s comment about having spent the afternoon listening to the strangest speeches are my favourite parts @DuncinToffee.

Blackford also being vindicated here.

Dawn Butler is speaking so well. Finally she has her moment.

Anyone manage to count how many times Jess P managed to say Johnson is a liar? 😁

I loved it when she said something like "I'm glad we can finally call him a liar in this house"

itsgettingweird · 19/06/2023 20:18

Dawn Butler was brilliant pointing out she was removed from the house for calling him a lair - and it's not that she's feels vindicated but that the system needs an overhaul.

I thought she was outstanding at not going "I told you so" but rather campaigning for a better system.

Agree she'd make a great leader.

Honourable means fuck all to Janiie clearly

Parliamentary democracy fine. Honourable, lovely.

A bunch of known Jonnson critics rambling at length with their massive axes to grind is just ridiculous. They should have been told to get to the point 🥱.

I hope that also applies to JRM, who admitted he went over time and was, well, not at his most coherent.

DuncinToffee · 19/06/2023 20:24

If you don't want to be called a liar, don't lie.

It really is that simple

Debates are always like this. Funny how you have never complained before.

It's not a debate. It's folk queuing up to stick the knife in. Where, pray tell, is the debate in Philips and Butler banging on saying liar liar liar? It's juvenile.

DuncinToffee · 19/06/2023 20:30

It's their chance to be heard just in case it doesn't go to a vote

You don't believe Johnson lied?

This is the official record. It's good to get these things down.

IClaudine · 19/06/2023 20:34

Why is it juvenile to tell the truth, especially when people have been sanctioned for doing so previously? If you want juvenile, look up Johnson's Hansard record.

RafaistheKingofClay · 19/06/2023 20:41

I don’t think Butler did go liar, liar, liar. She did mention it and she was certainly entitled to given what happened to her before. But her speech was much much more than that.

This is going on now. Can we get on with the vote.

pointythings · 19/06/2023 20:43

It is incredibly important to get all of this down in Hansard so that people can read it later and confirm that Boris Johnson was indeed a massive liar. Perhaps it will warn some people off voting for a similar character in the future.

Butler was absolutely brilliant.

She wasn't only vindicated from calling him a liar but she actually stood up and made proposals for how to make the system better to prevent this situation again.

She stood proud and was clear and made excellent points when she'd have been quite entitled to just say "I told you so" Grin

cakeorwine · 19/06/2023 20:47

Caroline Lucas now.

This will be good

I was going to say this. It will all be on the records for hundreds of years.

Good point.

Peregrina · 19/06/2023 20:50

Well yes we're all over lockdown and Boris has gone. Just vote for it and move on. Jesus how can they all wang on repetitively like this for hours.

I can only imagine Janiie that you haven't, like me, lost a husband to Covid. Fortunately the lockdowns had stopped by then and I was able to give him a proper funeral, unlike a good many people were able to do. But I am not going to forget my husband of more than 4 decades in a hurry and I don't doubt that many of those MPs speaking speak on behalf of constituents in the same boat as me. So they can 'Wang on' (in your rather coarse words) as long as they like as far as I am concerned.

RafaistheKingofClay · 19/06/2023 20:52

Sorry for your loss Peregrina

itsgettingweird · 19/06/2023 20:53

Sorry about your husbands death peregrina. It must be so hard to see all this unfolding. Flowers

itsgettingweird · 19/06/2023 20:53

Good point that abstaining doesn't mean you disagree in the report.

But it's cowardice.

pointythings · 19/06/2023 20:55

I'm so sorry, @Peregrina . Flowers
Watching this must be painful. It just highlights how important it is for all this to be out there in the public domain as a permanent reminder.
