What did you discover about your car?

Pinching this idea from a similar thread started by someone else on another subject.
Since DH and I went from 2 cars to 1 last year - I noticed when hoovering his car after a recent trip to the tip that there are airline style trays attached to the back of the front seats, there are also two storage areas underneath your feet in the back seats, the console at the front has two bigger separate compartments beneath the gear stick. In the ashtray were two pound coins (presumably for parking) Their is an arm rest in the centre of the back seat which when folded down has cup/can holders for drinks and sa slot for books or maps. In the boot there is a basic tool kit in a space above the wheel arch, on the other side there is a wheeled box clipped to the inner wall. Who knew? We were desperate for space when we went camping two years ago - and these extra areas of space would have been manna sent from heaven!! DH used to take his car to be valeted and he didn't know about these storage areas either. But it's not a new car and when DH bought it - he was left to browse the car on his own as the sales guy was busy!!
Anyone else found anything extra in their car??

In an old car, if you moved the boot carpet thing, there was a picnic table forming the floor of the boot, as a lid of a storage compartment

Hellishforest · 17/06/2023 21:54

I was watching a mechanic change one of my light bulbs last year and saw that the car had a puncture repair kit - I’d had the car 13 years and wasn’t aware of its existence!

PortalooSunset · 17/06/2023 21:55

@INeedAnotherName in mine the seat backs fold onto the seats, and there's a shelf which usually sits on the boot floor that comes up and slots in to make it level. Not a Ford though.

QuintanaRoo · 17/06/2023 21:58

I used to have a Ford where the passenger seat cushion could be slid and flipped and there was a secret compartment. Only found out due to a thread on Mumsnet! Nothing in the manual.

ThatFuckingPaddington · 17/06/2023 21:58

Men stare at it a lot.

mondaytosunday · 17/06/2023 22:00

A friend showed me that if I leave a window open I just need to hold the locking button on the remote down and the windows will close! Mind blown!

QuintanaRoo · 17/06/2023 22:00

Oh and it was years before I worked out how to turn off the alarm when leaving the dog in the car while I nipped to the shop….had to ask on here for that eventually as got sick of the alarm going off.

cheapskatemum · 17/06/2023 22:00

Smart electric ForFour: in winter I get 30 miles on a full charge. In summer I get 68!

QuintanaRoo · 17/06/2023 22:03

Omg inspired by this thread I’ve just googled to see if the seats on my Vauxhall Astra go completely flat and it says yes! Now just need to work out how.

Louisetopaz21 · 17/06/2023 22:04

After driving my husband's range rover in the winter with cold hands I realised months later that the steering wheel is heated, my dh neglected to tell me ha ha

INeedAnotherName · 17/06/2023 22:37

😩 Why? Just why??

What did you discover about your car?
PocketfulOfMiracles · 17/06/2023 23:21

Just before I sold it, I discovered my old freelander 2 had a setting where if you held down the wiper arm I think when turning off the ignition it engaged ‘winter wipers’, which basically put the wipers half way up the screen so that they defrosted on the heated windscreen.

I have an electric mini now. I could read the manual for the next six months and still not understand half of what it does. I’m reasonably sure flying Concorde was easier.

Ifailed · 17/06/2023 20:57

Didn't either of you bother to read the manual?

No normal person reads the manual.

EnthENd · 18/06/2023 00:06

I read the manual because I insist on my car's clock being correct, so I need to look up how to set it.

I discovered that the boot handle really isn't fixed very well to the boot. I still need to get that fixed.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 18/06/2023 00:42

I was in staionary traffic and found my car had a screen to allow me to direct the aircon. Old car had little levers and jets to fiddle with.

I have only owned this car since 2019.... Blush

TiptoeThroughTheToadstools · 18/06/2023 02:05

I have had my current car for 5 years, at the petrol station the other day I couldn't get my petrol cap to open, you just push it in and it usually clicks open, I was starting to panic a bit as I was in my reserve. I was banging it and trying to force it open, thinking I might have to call break down out. When a nice man came over and told me I had to unlock my car for it to open 🤦🏻‍♀️ in 5 years this has never happened so I must always (until this time) filled up with my car unlocked, I felt so stupid 🤦🏻‍♀️

Speedweed · 18/06/2023 02:12

I read the manual for my car, and got so excited about all the things it could do.

Unfortunately I have the most basic spec, so it does none of it. But at least I know what a higher spec version of my car could potentially do 😂

OooPourUsACupLove · 18/06/2023 02:16

After about 5 years I discovered the driver's side hand grasp above the door was actually a sunglasses case. With a pair of the previous owner's sunglasses in it 😎

OooPourUsACupLove · 18/06/2023 02:19

And - not really the car itself but kind of - when I replaced the old radio for one with bluetooth I bought a wiring converter thingy to make it easy to fit. And discovered as well as connecting up the powers, speakers etc, it also means the steering wheel controls that used to do volume, play, skip tracks etc for the 2004-era cd player now all work for Spotify

SabrinaThwaite · 18/06/2023 06:32

That it has an annoying number of squeaks and rattles in the cabin and lots of things only work intermittently.

HelpMeGetThrough · 18/06/2023 06:50

That it can park itself. Me and my OH had a right laugh on an industrial estate with big spaces, getting the car to parallel and reverse park. Nothing more freaky than watching the steering wheel turn when you aren't touching it.

It's the little things.

When I was in a car crash a few months ago I discovered that my car automatically called the emergency services. All of a sudden I heard a male voice saying "hello, if there's anyone conscious please make a sound". I'm my dazed state I thought it was a voice from above 😅

🤣🤣🤣

snumpy · 18/06/2023 09:11

@HelpMeGetThrough I have this option on my car, never had the courage to use it though.

It's interesting and sort of works, you do need a taxi to get to the pavement when it's parked though.

My car has an airconditioned glovebox, which always really makes me laugh. WHAT FOR???

For the emergency bar of chocolate 😋
