What do you do? How long have you been doing it? What qualifications do you have/how did you get into it?

Working in the NHS and considering leaving to peruse a career with higher earning potential.

OP posts:

Why does the training cost that amount?

@tobee Because you need an ATPL (Airline Transport Pilot Licence) which takes 13-18 months of full-time training at an air school. Flying training is about £100 per hour airborne time plus you need to pass 16 ground school (classroom based theory) exams.

Sponsorship schemes have become rare which risks candidates being limited to those from wealthier backgrounds. If airlines/unions restart sponsorship schemes, the career will be more open to a wider range of economic backgrounds. 🤞🏻

Are you suggesting that women (as most posters seem to assume OP is) can’t do what men do?

Seeing as I earn double what my DH does, no that's not what I'm saying but I'm sure you know that, but I see we've had a man come in and correct us that there is no difference between men and women at work so I had better shut up now and let you continue to talk about your husband's job for all the value it will bring to the OP. Heaven forbid we try to have a female centred professional conversation.

7Worfs · 18/06/2023 08:47

TBF I don’t mind posts about “my DH’s salary” as long as they are not essays.

But I don’t understand the gall of a man elbowing in on a women’s career thread, and mentioning he’s a man who’s promoting women. Irritating as fuck. Want a medal, you blessed champion of women?

Maybe that’s why women lag in their careers - not many of us can summon the confidence and entitlement of a mediocre career man. 🤔

@Dogsandbabies well done! I'm particularly interested in how you achieved this and what level you are currently at. I entered the CS 3 years ago at EO level. Currently on Mat leave but coming back to a HEO role. Thanks 😊

Absolutely this IME.

Dogsandbabies · 18/06/2023 09:29

@calimc83 I am now a chief economist at a ALB. So the equivalent pay would be SCS2. I jumped around different departments a lot. Every time for a promotion. Always looked for a new role after maternity leaves (I have had 3 so far) so went back on a promotion or somewhere where I could see space above me. Tried to do a few high profile roles, where I got a lot of exposure for my work. In the last few years I have been asked to apply for roles rather than chasing, which has been key in progressing at the more senior roles. Good luck with your return!

Actually I didn't find it irritating, I thought it was nicely written. But we don't all have to agree.

Personally, I'm interested in career experiences whether it's from men or women. In my department at an investment bank, there were 98 male fee earners and 2 female (of which I was one).

Part of the drive for equality should be opening up previously male-dominated careers for women and if people want to give advice on how to succeed in their field, I'm happy to listen.

Chief of Staff (financial services) - pay inc bonuses is over £300k a year but hours are relentless - v long days and also always on duty / contactable even when on holiday, evenings, weekends etc.

Place-marking to analyse posts forensically, in a paranoid attempt to work out whether the high earners are more or less intelligent than I am.

😂 love this

MrsSkylerWhite I am a little bored of hearing about how wonderful and high earning your husband is. Can we all agree he is a god and you a goddess for bagging him. Well done both of you and all that.”

🤣

calimc83 · 19/06/2023 15:59

@Dogsandbabies thanks! That's really interesting. Much appreciated. How did u manage to cope with a young family and establishing a career? Did you go back part time or was it always full time? 😊

4andnotcounting · 18/08/2023 18:25

@Passthecatspaw what is your d educational / social background? Ie privately educated? Middle class etc? It’s a large salary for a twenty something that hasn’t worked very hard. Good for her

weegiemum · 18/08/2023 18:34

I work for a charity so no big bucks for me. Dh is a GP and on well over £100k.

rllrsk8 · 18/08/2023 20:26

I've been following this conversation with interest as it's something I have often wondered. I have a decent salary in the design industry, but will likely never reach a 100k salary. There are many things I like about my role, my company and my colleagues that have made me stay, but it's certainly not stress free and doesn't have great benefits or bonuses. I have thought about changing careers, but a lot of the options shared here don't sound like jobs I would enjoy, or be qualified for. So I have two questions:

  1. If you have one of these higher paying jobs, do you enjoy it? And if not, does the salary do enough to help you get over that, by giving you independence, quality of life etc etc?
  1. Does anyone have a design based job that is exceptionally well paid, and if so, what? How did you get there?

Thanks!

@MrsSkylerWhite you're embarrassing yourself, striped doesn't sound the least bit bitter, she's been pretty gracious when you just need to be told to stop being so cringeworthy!”

What? The question was if you earn £100k what do you do?

I said I don’t but my husband does and said what he does and what his qualifications are.

Why is that cringeworthy?

Are you suggesting that women (as most posters seem to assume OP is) can’t do what men do?

What we’re saying is that this thread is about how women succeed financially themselves. We need to stop valuing women by their relationships with men and instead value them for what they do.

Labbingtons · 19/08/2023 17:28

I’m an educational psychologist running a small private practice, with a couple of associates. We all work office hours, term time only and all draw just over 100k.

Are you able to pm your details?… in need of some assistance with construction contract whereby my partner is owed large sums of money but other lawyers are stating it is too hard to prove@BlueSkiesBlueRain

koalathecat · 20/10/2023 09:25

My last P60 was £96k.

I work in recruitment, work fully remotely and have flexibility but will often work into the evening when DD is in bed.

I came straight into recruitment from uni and have 8 years experience.

BlazenWeights · 18/11/2023 21:35

Can you please give me tips on how to get PM experiences that count? I’d love to go into full time project management but feels like it’s different in every industry. Asides certification do you know any practical courses that’s close to reality that I can attend. Thanks

You should look into software design. I don't know how transferable your designer is. But I assume you could be making really good money in 5 years. Look into glassdoor for salaries.
