If you earn over £100k

What do you do? How long have you been doing it? What qualifications do you have/how did you get into it?

Working in the NHS and considering leaving to peruse a career with higher earning potential.

I am a lawyer, specialising in construction disputes. I started earning over £100k when I was four years qualified, but the education and training involved meant I spent two years studying law after my degree (a postgraduate diploma in law and then the legal practice course) and then a two year training contract, which is really difficult to then. I am now 7 years qualified, I work part time, four days a week, and am on £130k

*difficult to get

CrapBucket · 17/06/2023 21:00

I’d love the high salary but the jobs all sound so boring or not ethical enough for me. I don’t think I like money enough to be a high earner.

GeriatricMumma · 17/06/2023 21:00

Economic crime for a financial institution- been working in the field for over 25 years.

Pharmaceutical regulatory affairs for me, and research scientist for my husband. Took 10 years from entry level (but that includes 2 years of maternity leave, so really just 8 years). Most areas of work have the potential to earn very well if you work your way up.

CrapBucket · 17/06/2023 21:01

God I sound a twat reading that back. I don’t mean to. I just would like being rich but can’t see a way of doing it where I still get to be immature and piss about at work. So unfair 🤣

Management consulting / programme management in investment banking. I have 20+ years relevant experience but long hours and high stress is a recurring theme throughout. I wouldn't recommend it unless you like feeling like you're a performing seal and being judged all the time. On the plus side, you're regularly outside your comfort zone so I guess it's good for personal development.😂

Intemperatefatty · 17/06/2023 21:08

I’m in consultancy, specialising in digital transformation (not big 4). Started out as a Tech PM/Integration specialist and worked my way up. Total package is just over £180K plus bonuses and other benefits. I love my job, built my team from the ground up and they are bloody awesome. 20+ years experience, two degrees in tech related subjects, plus a bunch of professional and technical qualifications. DH is a Senior Solutions Architect for a major bank and earns more than I do. He also gets a non-contributory final salary pension which I don’t but he’s been there nearly 30 years!

Our social circle that earn similar are either in law (magic circle), finance, senior civil and public servants or own their own businesses. My dad was CFO of a county council before he retired and earned more than that.

I know we are very fortunate, we were both born into good, stable families and educated well (me grammar, DH private) and both went to good unis. We also work very hard.

What’s wrong with people posting about OH jobs? I’m still confused.

Haha I know what you mean, I'm not at £100k yet, I'm in the civil service and work in a really interesting area, I could leave tomorrow and work in financial services doing the same job and earn 6 figures but it just doesn't appeal, so I'm taking the slower climb up the CS ladder, should be able to get to £100k with it still being interesting, it still is thus far at least.

ksjsb · 17/06/2023 21:15

@Hollyppp what was confusing about my response as to why it's frustrating?

Diddykong · 17/06/2023 21:18

I'm an academic but I top up my base rate salary with consultancy

Tiredmummaoftwo · 17/06/2023 21:19

I don't but my partner earns well over £100k. Partner in an accountancy firm worked there 10 years x

TallTrees78 · 17/06/2023 21:25

Senior professional services at a university, took me 15 years working my way up.

C1N1C · 17/06/2023 21:28

Anyone getting the impression OP is a journalist?

Buildingthefuture · 17/06/2023 18:36

Honestly? Totally by accident. Due to personal circumstances, took a fairly low paying/junior job in what turned out to be an amazing company. Had a really inspirational (but slightly mental and scary) female director. And I thought….I want to do HER job. It took me 7 years, the company invested massively in my development, but I got there and have then progressed from there. I had a degree at the time and have since done a boat load of other professional qualifications. But really? I was just lucky.

Don't say that about yourself. Be proud of what you've achieved.

No, I’m a Teacher so no chance of earning over £100k.

What do you do and what do you earn?

I am in finance - didn’t post because I don’t earn over £100k - close but not quite.

I suppose the feminist in me hates that women always post what their husband earns. I doubt there will ever be a thread where men come on a claim their wife’s income and successes as their own.

I watched the thread interests because I am nearly there - not quite yet and was looking for inspiration for other women who have broken that glass ceiling (or been freed form the sticky floor depending how your view it). Other women came on because they have done it and wanted to share.

I find it odd that some women come on to say what their husbands do.

But OP is looking for career ideas. Not inspo from successful women necessarily.

Because the question was ‘if you earn’….

A woman / wife (who has not discussed her own salary) extolling her husbands / partners earning power over her own or as an extension of her own identity plays in to many archaic tropes and, in attaching herself to her partners salary, undermines her own earning potential (and that of other women)

ksjsb · 17/06/2023 21:39

@sadlittlelifejane she asked how long people have been in their careers to get to £100k, not just what they do, we all know that it's very different being a man vs a woman in many careers, I can google if I want to find out what successful men are doing, as a career woman, it's women I am interested in, as they will likely be facing similar challenges to me that my DH does not.

Namechanger355 · 17/06/2023 21:39
