On a scale of 1-10, how happy are you?

1= miserable, nothing to be happy about

5= ok. Life could be better but I'm middling along.

10= ecstatic. Every aspect of life is wonderful and deeply fulfilling

I'd say I'm a 4. I'm coasting along but there is a sadness around living a half life.

What about you?

I seriously doubt people are scoring 9, genuinely, and yet are on mumsnet every single day 😂

I wonder though if this is actually the perspective that’s holding you back from a higher score? As in, you’re imagining that to be a 9 you have to be off jet skiing or doing something exciting every day, when actually most people who are 9s are just people who live mundane lives (mumsnet browsing included) very happily and gratefully

2 - just because of the state of this country.

Lying conservative politicians, cronyism, run down public services including schools, run down high streets and businesses going bust.

The country is fraying and tatty. I've just been to two European countries, with busy shopping areas, cafe culture, quality, care and standards.

Eggmcmuffin · 16/06/2023 21:58

3...on paper should be a lot higher but dealing with a depressed husband is just draining the life out of me

SunnyDaysAndEndlessNights · 16/06/2023 22:01

Happiness is only fleeting, as are all our emotions.

Happiness is only fleeting, as are all our emotions.

But contentment endures. If I had to say what my biggest lesson in life has been, it might well be that.

Earlydancing · 16/06/2023 22:15

At this particular second, I just finished marking a whole batch of exam papers, and am munching on some Walkers French Fries and drinking ice cold vanilla coke.
So I'm a 9.5. 🥳

Your problem is you're thinking too much. I used to be like you.

Stop reading the papers and watching the news. Live in the present within your community. You'll pop up by an easy 4 points.

Not going to work for me. I see it around me. My local centre is a mess.

I also work in the public sector and see the appalling effect of lack of funding on children.
I see the impact of low standards and expectations in families. Lack of support for parenting. Some of the children in this country really don't have a chance.

8 with my life overall.
2 with the state of the world.

MorningShow · 16/06/2023 22:36

8/9 - There are some major external stressors and health issues that make me feel as if it should be lower, all things considered, but at the same time I am married to my absolute best friend, have children I adore (when they aren’t driving me mad in the way that DC often do) and the icing on the cake is that we have two dogs. What’s not to like?! 🐕

  1. No money. DS is driving me around the bend. No friends. 30 year old pony who I've owned since I was 10 is about to be PTS. If I didn't have DS I wouldn't be here but seriously considering sending him to his dad (who he hates) and just give up.
ploopypleepy · 16/06/2023 22:42

I'd say 9, lovely family who I'm close with with no real health concerns. Marriage is mainly good. Beautiful DC. Job I enjoy. No significant money worries. Take pleasure in the small things. Laugh every day even though some are mundane.

Would be 10 if my husband’s health was better.

HashBrownandBeans · 16/06/2023 22:59

I’m at a 7. I’m married to my soulmate, we have loads of adventures planned, my kids and stepkids are doing ok. The only negatives are we rent and will never be able to buy, and I’ve just been made redundant.

Fluffyowl00 · 16/06/2023 23:00

I think in April I was probably about a 5. Cost of living was crippling, debt, single parent, lots of illness.

Then my dog died and I stopped reading the news, stopped worrying about money and debt and just decided to live in the here and now. I have a wonderful DC. Accommodation. A job with great colleagues. A car that works. A lovely (if a bit bonkers) family. My health.

So now I’d say a 9. I just wish I’d appreciated all of that before, because if the dog was still around, it would be a 10.

cassiatwenty · 16/06/2023 23:01

Slowly sinking into depression. Trying so so hard every day to stay afloat. Overbearing and energy draining family.

I put 5, sometimes could be 4. 😥🐇

I live in a beautiful and safe town/village. No crime, polite people, acccess to nature. But so reserved. I'm so so lonely.

No opportunities for young people in regards to friendship or romance or career. I live in a clean house but it doesn't make up for my nightmares and feeling like I'm missing out on living, and not observing, my life.

Exactly

TokyoSushi · 16/06/2023 23:02

About 8 I'd say, lovely family, lovely house, lovely job.

Some friendships in a slightly tricky patch and cost of living is biting a bit, but generally ok.

Blanketenvy · 16/06/2023 23:02

I'd say 3.5. Life feels really hard with horrible chronic health problems really wearing me down and struggling to keep going. Not been able to have children due to health, work feels horrible due to health and am constantly struggling to stay in work and anxious about losing my job. Parental Ill health and a very complex set up with a disabled sibling which all feels very sad and scary.
Having said all that I am quite good at enjoying the little things day to day and feel like I manage things the best I can in a shitty situation.

AnyaMarx · 16/06/2023 23:30

6

Health issues that are hopefully getting addressed now and if that happens - id be an 8 !

I'm single and would like a relationship but it's not the be all and end all

I've put 2 stone on due to
Said health issues so feel flat on that score and nothing I own fits

Dd has stopped talking to me which hurts . Ds never checks in .

But generally happy . Like living alone . Have hobbies and good friends .

So I've taken off 4 points for the above , so right now a 6 . Get any of the above sorted and I'd add a point !
