Bath - any recommendations for places to eat

We're in Bath this weekend- any recommendations for places to eat please? We like gastropub type places - not formal but not fast food/chain either. We eat meat/fish/veg, Asian and other ethnic foods.

Don't mind driving out a bit to somewhere.

Bear Grills does really nice steak and is in the centre of everything, been twice and would definitely recommend.

Sotto sotto is really good

A few suggestions for gastropubs in Bath:

The Marlborough Tavern
The Chequers
The Huntsman

Just a little bit further out:

The Hare and Hounds (this is up on the hill on the edge of town, you can walk or get the bus - the views are amazing)
The George (this is along the canal, a really lovely 45 min walk out of town)

Sotto Sotto is a bit formal though. If you sit in the lower bit it's incredibly noisy and hard to talk and the waiter was constantly sweeping the table of crumbs with one of those little dustpan and brush things. That was a while back though and it may have changed.

The Green Bird is good for brunch and coffee. To be honest most of the places I go to are coffee/lunch places and a bit out of the centre.

I know you said no fast food, but the absolute best burger in the world comes from Bath. Schwartz Brothers!

knittingaddict · 15/06/2023 10:29

The Castle Farm at Midford (just outside Bath) is amazing for Sunday lunch. It books up weeks in advance, so probably won't get in.

RhubarbRocks · 15/06/2023 10:29

We liked Chequers - cosy gastropub

LivingDeadGirlUK · 15/06/2023 10:30

The chequers do amazing sunday lunch but make sure you book.

Just skimming this thread to see if i recognise any names from 25 years ago (I don't!) apart from this one! Best burgers ever - followed by Grubbs in Brighton!

Yes! Are you my daughter? 😂It's becoming a regular with my daughter after a dog walk.

Lovely iced coffee and poached egg and chorizo on wholegrain sourdough. Lots of dogs, but no children. They are banned.

Wow, that brings back grear memories. I went to school and lived near Bath in the '80s and early '90s and frequented Schwartz Bros Burgers regularly. The mustard mayo/garlic mayo burgers were my favs. I have now lived at the opposite end of the country for a lot of years and can honestly say I've never had a burger to match. Totally superb. Glad to hear they are still going strong! Perhaps we ought to set up a national fan club!

For a bit out ot town I used to enjoy a nice bite at the Wheelwrights Arms in Monkton Combe. Lovely pub and the finest pint of Wadworth 6X around. If things are as good as they were back then you won't be disappointed.

Nobody has mentioned Sally Lunns??

I went for lunch there a couple of weeks back, and they do look to have a nice evening menu as well.

Booking recommended!
