Iceberg lettuce. Love it.
Got a bad rep for being boring. I know it’s less nutritious than other lettuces but it’s so crisp and refreshing!

What’s your underrated food?

Apples. Cheap, store well, and a variety of textures and tastes for every occasion - you can just eat them straight, chop them up, cook them (bleurgh). I like sharp green ones dipped in melted brie, and I love the rough redish ones like cox's or braeburn, Apples are the best.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 14/06/2023 12:47

White cabbage. Keeps a long time in the fridge and is great in salads - much crisper and crunchier than any lettuce. Also v good for coleslaw of course.

louderthan · 14/06/2023 23:23

Tinned broad beans.

Jellycatspyjamas · 14/06/2023 23:27

Baby potatoes, roasted in olive oil, salt and pepper - like tiny jacket potatoes.

CrumbliestCrumble · 14/06/2023 23:29

Toast with butter
Cheese on toast
Toasties

Yep basically any variety of toast

Emmamoo89 · 14/06/2023 23:43

Hate food threads. Never fails to make me hungry 🤣

LittleBrownJug · 14/06/2023 23:43

@louderthan please elaborate

CurlewKate · 15/06/2023 00:18

@GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER if you like cabbage you'll love okonomyaki!

DidyouNO · 15/06/2023 00:22

Cream crackers, buttered and sandwiched together with peanut butter. Yum!!

JockTamsonsBairns · 15/06/2023 00:34

Bread and butter.
No, really. Thick sliced tiger bread with nice butter is the food of the gods.

Also, I made a spaghetti Napoli on my day off yesterday. Just good olive oil, skinned vine tomatoes, chopped garlic, a little salt, and plenty of black pepper. Bit of torn basil sprinkled over the top.
It was genuinely the nicest thing I've ever tasted.

Oh, and cheese on toast with a bit of Lea & Perrins on it.

God, I'm ravenous.

Sandwiches, toasted or not, are perfect!

Bread (a hundred types to choose from )
Meat (cold cuts, left overs, fishes, meats BBQed, smoked, brined)
Veg (leaves, thin sliced peppers, cukes, onions, olives, tomatoes, baby radish)
Cheese (another hundred to choose from)
Sauce ( salsa, pesto, peanut butter, salad dressings, mayo, jam, cranberry sauce, comfit, mustards, relishes, BBQ sauce, sub sauce)
Extras (picked vegetables, hummus, boiled eggs, fried onions, potato salad, coleslaw,)

There must be a million different sandwiches to be had.

Groutyonehereagain · 15/06/2023 01:46

Yes to toast. ❤️

fridaynight1 · 15/06/2023 01:48

Beans on Toast. Food of the Gods, I would happily eat this every day.

Iceberg lettuce I like but I can't eat it. Well I could but I'd be on the toilet all day.

ElizaMulvil · 15/06/2023 01:55

Dandelion leaves - the best and cheapest salad [free].

FelicityFlops · 15/06/2023 06:26

AuntieJune · 15/06/2023 06:29

Sundried tomatoes

Fresh mint

Going with toast as well.

With butter
With cheese
With jam
With sandwich ingredients
With eggs
With an inch of marmite when you've got a migraine

When the thickness of the white bread is right, there is no better food on the planet.

Also agree with iceberg lettuce. Got one the other day, whinged about the cost, but then thought, oh this is really nice.

xanthippe8 · 15/06/2023 06:51

Defo agree with cheese on toast with Worcestershire sauce, delicious, so easy and tasty. Also Lamb's liver with mashed potatoes, cabbage and gravy (and bacon if there's any knocking about), really cheap but gorgeous.

AdaColeman · 15/06/2023 06:52

Liver, briefly fried in butter with sage leaves ~ delicious!
Kidneys, sautéed with a splash of sherry and some cream, served on toast..❤️

xanthippe8 · 15/06/2023 07:00

I'll be round to eat with you soon Ada!

AdaColeman · 15/06/2023 07:08

@xanthippe8 You would enjoy my lambs liver stroganoff! Wine Wine

xanthippe8 · 15/06/2023 07:11

Sounds divine!

lightlypoached · 15/06/2023 07:11

How could we leave out frozen peas ?

Spoon fulls of glorious green spheres packed with vitamins and protein. Ready in minutes, or eat raw.

Make a soup, add to a dinner, chuck in a salad, pea and Parmesan pasta or risotto. Yum.

And fishfingers. In a sandwich, on their own dunked in ketchup or with chips. Or chips and peas.

Oooh.

xanthippe8 · 15/06/2023 07:17

I don't think I've ever felt this hungry before breakfast time!

forageintheforest · 15/06/2023 12:08

Tinned sardines in oil, mashed and mixed with spaghetti.
