Is a changing mole always melanoma?

Color and shape changing.

I have a doctor appointment, but my anxiety is crippling me.

No it’s not always melanoma, also melanoma doesn’t always develop in moles.

CampfireZen · 13/06/2023 15:00

No. Mine was changing in colour, shape very irregular and becoming raised.

After biopsy, turned out to be nothing concerning at all.

Daffidale · 13/06/2023 15:02

No.

I had a panic earlier in the year with a “mole” that was growing and becoming crusty. Convinced I was going to be into biopsies etc

Nurse took one look at it. Wasn’t even a mole. Something else I can’t recall how to spell but basically a funny skin growth thing that just needed more moisturiser and it went away

Absolutely right ti see the Dr but try not to worry until you’ve seen them.

No. Lots of moles change shape and colour over time.

SpringOn · 13/06/2023 15:43

Nope. I had one that had gone from nothing to about a 6p size over a year. It was benign. They cut it out but it grew back! Biopsy says nothing sinister.

orangeflags · 13/06/2023 15:44

No. Had a nasty one on my eyebrow, saw a consultant and in the time it took to get the appointment to have it cut out it peeled off and completely healed

Catchasingmewithspiders · 13/06/2023 15:46

Nope, Ive had 5 bopsied/removed over the years and none of them have been cancerous

Lovestodrinkmilk · 13/06/2023 15:55

Had a 'mole' that changed enormously. Dermatologist took one look and said it was fine. Didn’t even need a biopsy. Eventually it disappeared.

TheShellBeach · 13/06/2023 16:32

I've had two which were benign.

Gettingbysomehow · 13/06/2023 16:36

No, I've had several "suspicious" growth removed and they were all benign.

Skinnermarink · 13/06/2023 16:55

I hope not, I’ve currently one on the side of my head that I’m seeing a GP about in a couple of weeks! It’s got so much bigger since I was pregnant (the baby is now nearly two years old though!) changed colour too. I mean I’m not worried about it being cancerous but I do hope they refer me to have it removed to be on the safe side because I don’t like the look and feel of it from a vanity perspective.

LookingGlassMilk · 13/06/2023 17:15

I got a new mole on my neck about a year ago. It kept peeling and changing shape. It had steaks coming out of it.
I got it removed and it was completely benign.

Pregnancy does cause moles to change x

TonTonMacoute · 13/06/2023 18:04

No.

I don’t know the exact stats but they are more likely to be non melanomas.

These can be treated easily now and you are doing the right getting it checked out asap.

molescare · 13/06/2023 18:15

Thanks all. So relieved!

wwyd2021medicine · 13/06/2023 18:18

Def not
DD had one that actually woke her at night with itching and irritation and not melanoma

Pregnancy does cause moles to change x

Thanks for that 😊 I thought so too and said that in my telephone consultation and the (male) GP said we wrongly blame pregnancy and hormones for all kinds of things 🙄

tedlassos · 13/06/2023 21:05

@Skinnermarink I look at melanomas and changing moles all the time, we will ask the person who took the biopsy if the patient is or has been pregnant recently because it changes everything, a mole that is quickly changing and is looking very melanoma like can be a normal mole that's changing with pregnancy or postpartum. It absolutely is a thing! Crazy really

UlrikakakaJ · 13/06/2023 21:08

No, I had one checked out and it wasn’t a mole at all but a kind of wart 😳

DorritLittle · 13/06/2023 21:09

In my experience almost anything that sounds dodgy can also be OK with moles and only a dermatologist can really tell so don’t worry! Good you have an appointment.

Skinnermarink · 13/06/2023 21:10

Ah right! Thanks for this (I’m still shallow enough to hope they err on the side of caution and remove the bloody thing as it used to be nicely hidden under my hairline 😳)

TrueScrumptious · 13/06/2023 21:15

If it helps, my DH had melanoma and it didn’t look like a mole at all. Not raised. It was like a tiny freckle but had a faint dark line through the middle. You had to look closely to even see it.

Jinglybangly · 13/06/2023 21:16

I grew a whole new mole on the palm of my hand . Totally fine apparently.

Lucylu1984 · 20/08/2025 16:05

Hello everyone,

I've had a bit of a scare this morning. Caught sight of a dark freckle on my back in the mirror (that awkward bit between the shoulder blades that you can't quite see). It looks irregular. I'm absolutely freaking out. It's not itchy or bleeding. Are all dark irregular freckles melanomas?xx

Gettingbysomehow · 20/08/2025 17:17

None of the 20 changing moles the NHS has removed for me have been melanoma. Not one. I have to get them seen to as I lived in the tropics for years.
