How do you manage body odour and what material clothes do you choose?

Just that really.

My BO can be bad at times which can transport onto clothes and so I feel like I'm constantly trying to search for clothes that are less likely to stink.

What do you do to manage your BO and do you have any tips on washing your clothes?

Cotton only. Human-made fabrics stink when sweat has dried onto them, so I save my nice polyester or mixed work tops for winter events/evenings, not full days and definitely not summer.

dementedpixie · 12/06/2023 21:59

What antiperspirant do you use?

usermumnurse · 12/06/2023 22:00

100% cotton all the way for clothes
Shower once a day pref. morning and use antibacterial deodorant
Personally for me I find keeping a clean shave underarm helps too but each to their own in the hair dept! Smile

Thanks. Isn't it difficult to get summer dresses made with cotton though?

Oh and one tip for managing BO that I discovered during Covid - use hand sanitizer on your armpits, works like a treat!

What antiperspirant do you use?

I use salt of the Earth

Use laundry powder rather than gels I spent years using the latter and my sportswear particularly never smelled properly clean, changing to powder was a game changer.

Antibacterial deodorant sounds amazing. Could you share which one you use?

I use roll on and spray deodorant and only wear cotton.

DelphiniumBlue · 12/06/2023 22:03

I've heard that an actual bar of soap works better than shower gel. DS2 who uses soap is less stinky than his brothers, but I haven't tested it scientifically!

continentallentil · 12/06/2023 22:03

Um OP, if you have a problem with BO could you not use an anti-persperant? Because that would sort it.

There are plenty of cotton dresses about.

Yes it does - more actual soap to lift off the bacteria.

Try Mitchum antiperspirant

WeedSmellDramas · 12/06/2023 22:04

It's great trying to be natural etc.

But honestly I have to stick to chemically anti-perspirant deodorant.

I have tried the natural ones. But I just end up smelly on hot days.

If I'm not going to be sweaty then I'll use something gentle. But in current weather it needs to be Mitcham etc.

welshweasel · 12/06/2023 22:05

Bin your natural deodorant and get something decent like Mitchum or even driclor. Your BO will be gone!

rabbittortoise · 12/06/2023 22:05

Thanks for all the tips!

@continentallentil
I do use antiperspirant, but it's probably not as effective (I use salt of the earth).

Does anyone know of any good ones that are unscented?

OP posts:
continentallentil · 12/06/2023 22:05

Dermol is an antibacterial body lotion actually, so could try that, along with soap and a proper deodorant

dementedpixie · 12/06/2023 22:06

rabbittortoise · 12/06/2023 22:01

I use salt of the Earth

Is that not a deodorant rather than an antiperspirant? They dont stop you sweating. Maybe you need to switch away from using a natural deodorant to something stronger

EvilElsa · 12/06/2023 22:07

I've not found any natural products that keep me from having BO by the end of the day -and I've tried a lot. I use Sanex mens roll on which keeps me BO free even after long runs and gym sessions.

continentallentil · 12/06/2023 22:07

Salt of the earth is not going to be v effective because it’s hippy dippy. Try a gentle unscented roll on like Dove and if thsn doesn’t work then move to mitcham

LubaLuca · 12/06/2023 22:08

Wash armpits with soap and something that will cause friction (flannel, shower puff, exfoliating soap), and shave them.

Cream antiperspirant.

Clothing material isn't such a concern, I don't sweat much when I've done the above regardless of what I'm wearing. I avoid polyester, but that's just preference. Wash clothes with biological powder, line dry when possible to make them dry quickly.

Actually my sister got me onto Wilde and I find it pretty good. I am not super sweaty but have to take the tube and all that.

Good luck op! I think it will be easily sorted.

rabbittortoise · 12/06/2023 22:10

Thanks all, clearly had no idea about the effective ones out there like Mitchum and Dove and Wilde! Also feeling silly for thinking deodorants and antiperspirant were the same thing...

wildinthecountry · 12/06/2023 22:11

Honestly I would stink if I didn't use an anti perspirant , I have three that I use on rotation and use whichever one is nearest to hand . Along with washing with a bar of soap .
I also squirt a little white vinegar on the pits of tops before washing .

wafflyversatile · 12/06/2023 22:14

Salt of the earth is a deodorant, not an anti perspirent deodorant.

Mitchum is good.

If the armpits of clothes smell try using vanish or just dip the armpits in boiling water. Or water with vanish in. Or rub some hand sanitiser in!

BO is caused by the excretia of bacteria that eat your sweat. That's why hand sanitiser works. It kills the bacteria.

dementedpixie · 12/06/2023 22:14

I use sure maximum antiperspirant
I use Dr beckmanns spray on the armpits of sportswear before washing
I use soap for washing in the shower
I wouldn't trust natural deodorant to keep me smell free when my antiperspirant struggles to do so.
