How do you manage body odour and what material clothes do you choose?

Just that really.

My BO can be bad at times which can transport onto clothes and so I feel like I'm constantly trying to search for clothes that are less likely to stink.

What do you do to manage your BO and do you have any tips on washing your clothes?

Thanks for all the tips!

@continentallentil
I do use antiperspirant, but it's probably not as effective (I use salt of the earth).

Does anyone know of any good ones that are unscented?

Can't seem to reply on your comment of mine!
I use the dr organics tea tree roll on - I can see you would prefer unscented - this is not too overpowering but does have scent.

Another one I've used in the past is sure invisible spray which is antibacterial I believe they do a roll on to - and Mitchum roll on and spray are very good but the scents are not
Great!

DyslexicPoster · 12/06/2023 22:16

Mitcham roll on. I spray sure under my boots after I wash and around my neck as I sweetly badly there at night for some reason and it stinks. Like vinegar but my gp poo poos this, I think it could be some weird night sweat thingie.

I have started spraying dry shampoo at the back by neck before I go to sleep now as I have long hair and do t wash it daily.

TheHandbag · 12/06/2023 22:17

Shower with traditional bar soap not shower gel.

I use Dettoll anti bacterial soap in the summer as it helps with the BO.

Use Mitchum roll on deodorant

Wash clothes in a hotter temperature with biological washing powder

Pit rock is amazing.

WotsitsQuavers · 12/06/2023 22:18

Small amount of baking soda. Don't let it burn the skin

Or baking soda and lemon to make a paste

pastypirate · 12/06/2023 22:20

I got really sweaty when I hit peri. I had to change everything.

No shower gel ever. Only bar soap but any bar soap will do the job. Have a good scrub though.

Dry your arm pits etc v thoroughly. Make sure the skin is bone dry before you add anti perspirant.

Driclor stings like fuck, Mitchum is alright but Sure Maximum protection is very effective it's the one in a box blue pink or sort of beige. It's a cream twist up thing. As effective as driclor though, I bought it for dd1 when she hit puberty as well it's very good.

I only use spray anti perspirant on top of the cream.

Deathbywhy · 12/06/2023 22:21

As others have said, Mitchum is the best. They do an unscented version which is the only one I will use, I can’t bear the smell of the anti perspirant working, the roll on is the most effective for me but when it’s really hot I do double up with the fragrance free spray after the roll on too

Cotton tops
Showering in the morning or, like DD, shower in the evening and wash with soap and a flannel in the morning.
We use Nivea spray deodrant and we both shave

I shower with Lush shower jelly in Summer.

DD has polycotton school blouses and stinks when she is home. I wash them with bio Persil, in Summer drying outside works wonder as well.

rabbittortoise · 12/06/2023 22:25

Wow. This has literally been cursing me for the past few decades and I can't thank you all enough. Amazing stuff. You've all made my day. Now onto choosing which product to use....🤔

I use a cap full of white vinegar in the fabric conditioner compartment of the washing machine drawer (instead of fabric conditioner) It takes the smells out of my stinky polyester work uniform.
Seem to think eating mango is a natural deodorant but I might have imagined that!

dementedpixie · 12/06/2023 22:29

Mitchum roll on takes ages to dry
Sure maximum in a box is my antiperspirant of choice just now - it is a cream rather than wet like a roll on

wildinthecountry · 12/06/2023 22:32

I use Mitchem cream , Mitchem gel , and Sure cream and I just rotate whichever one is close to hand that day . I also dry with hairdryer , only takes a few minutes .

petshihtzu · 12/06/2023 22:33

Driclor! It stops you sweating

dementedpixie · 12/06/2023 22:34

As well as spraying the armpits before washing I also use laundry sanitiser and use bio powder

Dumbphone · 12/06/2023 22:36

I had atrocious BO over the years all my tops would be ruined after a few wears no matter how much I scrubbed. I could only wear white and boil wash it. I would smell from early in the morning and sweat profusely.

my life has changed and I can honestly say at this time of the evening after being on the tube/office all day, and not washing since morning that I smell fresh.

this is what I’ve done over the years, and I don’t know which one worked:

  1. stopped stress, left my horrible job in children’s social work, no more stress. Maybe this was the most important one.
  2. stopped eating onions. This changed my BO overnight, onions were pouring out my sweat. Onions are totally unnecessary in many recipes.
  3. stopped shaving. Shaving didn’t help at all and made me sweat more
  4. stopped using driclor etc, it’s pure poison
  5. stooped using cream deodorant like Mitchum and dove - it has lots of oil in and sticks to clothing., you then can’t get smells out of some fabrics
  6. use a fabric disinfectant like dettol for washing - apply direct to armpit area and scrub if there are any smells
  7. only use bar soap to wash armpits with flannel and wash every morning and most evenings.

most days now I don’t wear any deodorant at all. I’m changed, and feel it’s a miracle.

Good luck with the sweating it really impacts your confidence but there’s loads of things you can try

Can I hijack this thread with a deodorant related query? Most aerosols contain Aluminum, which seems to be the ingredient that does the job - however I'd read advice not to use products containing aluminium due to breast cancer link. There are now loads of aluminium-free roll-ons (Sure, Dove, Sanex etc) but I've tried them all and they just don't work. Has anyone had any success with aluminium-free products?

dementedpixie · 12/06/2023 22:44

I dont think a cancer link has ever been proven.
I'd rather take my chances with the aluminium as I hate having wet smelly armpits

dementedpixie · 12/06/2023 22:46

From cancer research website

Can deodorant cause cancer?

No, using deodorants, antiperspirants and body sprays doesn’t cause cancer.

Some people have wondered if aluminium in some deodorants and sprays increases cancer risk. There is no good evidence to suggest this.

The NHS tells people not to use spray deodorants before a breast screening. This is because they can affect the screening results, not because they are harmful.

surreygirl1987 · 12/06/2023 22:47

Driclor is life-changing. But do NOT use after shaving your arm pits as it will sting like hell.

PostOpOp · 12/06/2023 22:52

I used to use Mitchum but use Sanex unscented now and it's good.

Not one single natural deodorant has worked for me. I love the idea.

Also the issue of aluminium in deodorants causing breast cancer has been debunked multiple times. Opt for other products if you wish, but there's no reason to fear getting breast cancer because of deodorant. And think of it practically, if it did cause breast cancer, do you think there wouldn't have been a class action lawsuit in the US by now? It's been in deodorants for a long time. Furthermore, in the EU and here, where product regulations are tighter than the US, if it caused any cancer, would it really still be in the shops, after all this time?

Badbudgeter · 12/06/2023 22:54

I think it’s a back to basics thing. Bar soap, laundry powder, natural fibres. It’s much harder now most clothes in the shops are polyester but you can still find cotton.

declutteringmymind · 12/06/2023 22:54

Also, Botox

mrsmacmc · 12/06/2023 22:57

I use Nivea ultimate protect (alternate between the cream and spray).

Soap (pears) rather than shower gel.

Spray underarms of tops / bra band with vodka before washing with bio washing powder.

Cotton tops as much as possible ❤️

HappiDaze · 12/06/2023 23:06

Wash with bar soap

Use a normal anti perspirant

Deodorant will never stop you from stinking of BO to everyone around you

Mitchum is by far the best

Don't wear polyester tops

Use google if you're unsure of any of the above and want to research further yourself
