How do you manage body odour and what material clothes do you choose?

Just that really.

My BO can be bad at times which can transport onto clothes and so I feel like I'm constantly trying to search for clothes that are less likely to stink.

What do you do to manage your BO and do you have any tips on washing your clothes?

In defence of deodorants, I used to swear by Tom's of Maine for many years but it hasn't been working so well for me recently - don't know if it's me or old stock.

Currently on my second Green People roll-on (the first was picked up reduced in TKMaxx and I thought I'd give it a go) and it's very effective for me, even when I was out during the hot weekend and basically sweating all day.

Haven't seen it since in TKMaxx but recently they've had Humble for £5.99 so I'm now trying that. Only tried it at home so far but it was certainly effective in today's hot temperature.

Deodorants don't stop you sweating but they don't clog your clothes with antiperspirant.

As PPs have recommended, white vinegar (cheaper than vodka!) on the underarms of clothes will kill the bacteria. There are also antibacterial laundry liquids like Dettol and a sports wash called Halo which do the same.

SmiteTheeWithThunderbolts · 12/06/2023 23:20

Oh, and a tip for anyone who uses a roll-on or stick and finds it stops working so well - try wiping the surface with a tissue. You might have got some bacteria on it and have been transferring it back to yourself.

I use soap in the shower, try to wear cotton clothes (not polyester!) and use Mitchum deodorant- I’ve tried natural deodorants and I just smell bad very quickly.

i was using liquid but don’t over fill the machine, and line dry as much as possible as I swear it’s better at getting pit stink out than tumble drying…

Thanks for posting OP. I've been (even) sweatier since peri and last summer my dd said (kindly) I was a bit stinky! Will be sticking up on Mitcham and Sure!

stardust777 · 12/06/2023 23:28

I've found using the Ordinary Lactic acid 5% once or twice a week a massive help. I use it on my working from home days. Pre-shower I clean with micellar water, then use a flannel and shower gel in the shower - after drying off I apply the lactic acid.

I'm not sure if lactic acid for armpits is derm-recommended though!

Rainbowshit · 12/06/2023 23:34

I need to spray on anti perspirant immediately after coming out of the shower otherwise I feeli I smell.

rabbittortoise · 12/06/2023 23:36

Thanks everyone. I will also get a dettol antibacterial soap for showering.

@stardust777 's post has got me thinking.. would exfoliating your armpits be effective? Thinking cheap exfoliator like Simple.

@colouringindoors you're most welcome! Hope it gets sorted for you.

I just wash with soap and use soft and gentle roll on. Never smell

If you're going to get Mitchum gel, after using it give it a half twist the wrong way , this stops the gel being slightly sucked out when you next pull the lid off .

StarchySturgess1 · 12/06/2023 23:38

I use Nuud. It's natural, no smell and really bloody impressive.

stardust777 · 12/06/2023 23:41

@rabbittortoise I would never use a physical scrub as I think that would be too harsh. I think using AHA on the armpits is a bit controversial. It might be worth trying BHA (e.g. salicylic acid) first. If you already have this ingredient in your face cleanser it might be worth a shot

CrotchetyQuaver · 12/06/2023 23:44

Wear a stick deodorant
Wash my clothes on proper old school washing temperatures -40/50/60- that way no honk lingers
Try to stick with cotton and linens in this heat as much as I can.

whatsupluckyducky · 13/06/2023 02:39

Mitchum stick for men. Not the cream but the solid stick in Ice Fresh. Game changer!
soap rather than shower gel and shaved armpits.

wildinthecountry · 13/06/2023 16:41

Are men's antiperspirants really different to women's? There seems to be the assumption that men's are more effective but I'm not sure that would really be true .

wildinthecountry · 13/06/2023 16:52

OK so after reading a bit online there is no difference between men's and women's antiperspirant . Other than fragrance .

primoseyellow · 13/06/2023 17:00

I wash with dettol soap and shower twice a day, evening one tends to be literally less than a minute quickie. I don't wear deodorant and wash clothes after every single wear, even if its just a few hours.

Maddy70 · 13/06/2023 17:14

Linen in the summer

Dove creme deodorant

Why don't you use deodorant or antiperspirant?

ginghamstarfish · 13/06/2023 19:16

I've had the same - thanks menopause. I tried the fancy natural ones, useless, Driclor stings a lot and have had to get up and wash it off (you put it on at night), Perspirex was better, now using Triple Dry roll on. The stink gets in your clothes and seems to be reactivated by body heat, so pretreat before laundering. I made a spray of bio detergent, Dettol sports wash, antibac soap etc mixed and spray on pits of all clothes and leave before washing.

MintJulia · 13/06/2023 19:21

In this weather.....

Soak in a warm bath every early morning to clear out the pores, then use deodorant, then a cotton bra and pants, and woven cotton or linen top & skirt or dress.

Bare legs, light leather or fabric shoes.

primoseyellow · 13/06/2023 19:39

@LubaLuca I honestly don't now! I do buy it, the Nivea pearl one because I like the smell, but I never seem to actually use it.

primoseyellow · 13/06/2023 19:40

Know not now!🙄

greenacrylicpaint · 13/06/2023 19:44

mostly cotton.

wash at 40 or higher ocassionally (usually wash at 30) with bio powder.

nivea unscented anti perspirant roll on. let that dry properly before getting dressed.

wash with bar soap, rub dry after washing, especially the areas where skin is next to skin.

Ladywinesalot · 13/06/2023 20:21

Drink 2 lites of water a day to flush out toxins
cut back alcohol
wash with bar of soap twice a day
change underwear every day
wear clean clothing everyday
use a exfoliate glove under arm everyday
shave underarm every day

rabbittortoise · 13/06/2023 20:30

I bought a dettol soap bar and Mitchum unscented roll on. Wore it for a day, so far so good! Although I was wearing sleeveless today so need to test on clothes that cover armpits!

I'm so excited😃
