Mum sentenced to 28 months in prison for abortion pills

Used after the cut off point of 10 weeks.

Regardless of how far gone she was, surely this isn't right?

It is her body, despite me morally really thinking what she did was very wrong.

I think custody is absolutely awful. So so wrong. I get it was awful but so many people get a suspended sentence so she should have for the sake of her three children.

She's committed a crime

If this b add by was so disposable to her then maybe her other kids need an intervention.

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 12/06/2023 21:41

@mids2019

I think this is a difficult topic in a way, but not really in this case, when someone aborted a baby at 32 weeks. I am pro choice. I don't think it's criminal to abort within reason. But this isn't. Simple, in my opinion. Like I said, that's why law exist, and this case isn't even close to the time limit.

Verifiedhuman · 12/06/2023 21:48

Well done that judge.
Shame OK RCOG, proving they think they should be above the law.
Rest in peace poor innocent baby.

I wonder what her children will think of her when they come to learn about the murder of their defenceless sibling.

I am disgusted at everybody defending this woman's actions...all the excuses....

Most people who commit murder have mental health issues....why should it be in this case mental health be an excuse?!

IJustHadToLookHavingReadTheBook · 12/06/2023 21:48

What is prison for? Here in the UK the party line is that prisons are supposed to achieve the following goals:

Punishment
Deterrence
Crime reduction
Rehabilitation
Public Protection
Reparation to Victim

I wonder then where the case of this mother of three falls on that list?

A 44yr old woman who, back during lockdown, used abortion pills obtained via the NHS to end her pregnancy, but later than they’re intended to be safely used.

A woman who was clearly beyond desperate and who has three existing children, three children who are going to bed tonight without their mum.

A woman who, by the judge’s own admission, feels ‘very deep and genuine remorse’ for her actions and is ‘racked by guilt’.

If she’s been sent down as punishment, I’d argue that she’s already punishing herself for what she did in a mental prison that she will never get to leave. Actually, the real victims of any punishment are her existing kids.

mids2019 · 12/06/2023 21:49

We occasionally hear heart wrenching stories about new borns left to die in toilets or isolated places and the police ask the mother to come forward because of health concerns not that they want them to stand up to the full weight of criminal law. This is an extremely sensitive subject.

What is the difference in this case? I think the moral difference is the deception and pre meditation involved but is it possible we still have a mentally stressed woman making poor choices in circumstances the vast majority of us (thank God) don't have to face?

Women (both vulnerable and not) are faced every single day with unwanted pregnancies and yet don't wait till they get past the point of legal gestation before choosing to abort or not .

Accidental unwanted pregnancies occur daily, hundreds of times every single day. Women with mental health issues are able to make a decision to terminate or not.

None of this woman's circumstances make this acceptable. Thank goodness the law is clear on that.

mids2019 · 12/06/2023 21:53

Is there a current of under class bashing as well? The woman was living a chaotic lifestyle and as a consequence made some poor life choices which she will regret for the rest of her life. How does prison help?

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 12/06/2023 21:55

If she went through all of that and still couldn't love the baby, what kind of life would it have had with her?

At least she could have gave baby a chance, by give the baby up for adoption? So you think the baby, capable to live without biological mother's help. should be terminated if the biological mother find impossible to love?

beckyre · 12/06/2023 21:55

If a woman was in a DV relationship, 32-34 weeks pregnant and was assaulted by her partner causing her to lose the baby, what could the partner be charged with?
Because if it is classed as a baby in the womb in that scenario then it would be the same here

mids2019 · 12/06/2023 21:56

@Verifiedhuman

If a teen ager gives birth in a toilet and conceals the body what should the punishment be in your opinion?

Should the police launch a murder investigation or do they comprehend there is a distressed young woman in need of medical and psychological assistance and act in her interests? ( As thankfully they do)

If a teen gives birth in a toilet it means she likely didn't realise she was in labour and by no means is it an attempt at ending her child's life so in that case she hasn't broken any laws. Unlike this case of which we are discussing

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 12/06/2023 22:02

as a consequence made some poor life choices

I am a foreigner, and what I found amazing about UK is that contraception/ morning after pill are free, when I came here. Also I assume abortion is free? If you are an adult, you have to face a consequence for you choices you make. Where does that lead, if something like this had no consequences?

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 12/06/2023 22:04

If a teen ager gives birth in a toilet and conceals the body

I think it's a totally different situation. And you know that, I'm sure.

Ilovechocolate87 · 12/06/2023 22:06

Oh come off it.....this baby would have been fully developed and pretty much ready to be born.It was murder- she knowingly killed a human being, and she should pay the price accordingly. It's not even like she didn't know she was pregnant. What sort of person could do something so barbaric.

Firecarrier · 12/06/2023 22:07

Well done to the judge (don't say that often) she is local and I read the full story earlier.

RIP baby Lily, what an horrific way for her to go 💐

Absolutely. At the hands of her own mother...😪

Bananananananananana · 12/06/2023 22:09

If the baby was abandoned at birth (as in dumped) rather than aborted, people would still run to defend her. I have no idea why people try to defend these things. Why does supporting the right to choose have to extend to this?!

Hmm, underclass bashing? I'm local, Barlaston is pretty posh round these parts. She'd had sex with 2 men, (not her partner) didn't know who the father was so deliberately murdered her child as she was an inconvenience.

Even whilst lying in the hospital bed she was go Googling whether she could get in trouble, she knew EXACTLY what she was doing.

Spanky123 · 12/06/2023 21:29

This is still murder

Another one who apparently knows better than prosecuting counsel and a high court judge 🙄

If anyone kills a newborn, it's murder. If the baby is stillborn, then that's not murder.

MaidOfSteel · 12/06/2023 17:35

I don't think prison is the right punishment here.

but its murder surely?

Nutellaonall · 12/06/2023 22:17

It makes me sick that a woman has been put in jail for doing something to her own body. The fact that it was a male judge makes it all the more worse. It is an utter disgrace. I don't care what the judge said. It is her body up until the time the baby is born.

Abortion must be decriminalized if we are to call ourselves a civilized and compassionate society.

Agree.
I strongly believe in abortion and that it should be accessible to anyone who needs it but this is not the same.
To take abortion pills knowingly at near full term is absolutely disgusting.
Im sure she had mental health issues and as the previous poster said, most who kill others do.
It was premeditated, researched and no doubt the poor baby suffered.
I believe the judge was correct in the sentence. The mother needed to accept responsibility for her actions, should have obtained an abortion months before.
Horrific

I have no idea either. It's deeply disturbing reading many of the responses on here.
