Mum sentenced to 28 months in prison for abortion pills

Used after the cut off point of 10 weeks.

Regardless of how far gone she was, surely this isn't right?

It is her body, despite me morally really thinking what she did was very wrong.

As you seem to know so many top lawyers maybe one of those can explain to you why she ended up with a custodial sentance

If you can get that child out without disturbing the bodily autonomy of the woman carrying it, then crack on, but whilst you need the woman to deliver it (however that may be), it's not actually viable on its own.

That is my point though - you are disturbing her bodily autonomy one way or another here by which I assume you mean her giving birth. Nothing is changing for her here other that in one scenario the baby is alive (and can be adopted - and yes a newborn baby will absolutely have no trouble finding adopters…) and in another the baby will be buried.

JaneNormanBag · 13/06/2023 00:07

Could you be any more patronising?

Confusedlovee · 13/06/2023 00:08

MakesMeFeelSad because of an outdated law from the 1800s created by men 🤷‍♀️

MakesMeFeelSad · 13/06/2023 00:09

If she had pleaded guilty instead of lying she wouldn't be in prison .

Confusedlovee · 13/06/2023 00:10

Apols the abortion act is from 1967
I’m tired and done here
women, please read up and protect your rights and that of your daughters
good night all

Confusedlovee · 13/06/2023 00:11

MakesMeFeelSad yes it’s awful for her that she didn’t admit what happened

she’s clearly unbalanced and vulnerable
her life sounds awfully chaotic
prison will make it worse

JustGeorgie · 13/06/2023 00:14

Why is she 'unbalanced and vulnerable'?

God those evil men writing laws against harming others. Have you even looked at that law to know what it says before objecting to it? You really don’t know what you’re talking about and it shows

Confusedlovee · 13/06/2023 00:16

JustGeorgie read the judges comments
it’s all in there

CoreyTaylorsSoggyTshirt · 13/06/2023 00:16

SoloMamabyChoice · 12/06/2023 23:46

How are they not comparable? You get that a baby at 34 week gestation is the same baby inside the womb as it is outside the womb yes?

You get that legally they aren't the same at all, yes?

MakesMeFeelSad · 13/06/2023 00:17

JustGeorgie · 13/06/2023 00:14

Why is she 'unbalanced and vulnerable'?

Some people just don't seem to be able to believe that women sometimes do awful things just because they are awful people

It's quite offensive to women really , poor little women, must be vulnerable and unbalanced

Confusedlovee · 13/06/2023 00:17

JaneNormanBag 😂 I do thank you. Despite getting the year wrong (lol) I studied the abortion act for a few years
have you read up on it?

Confusedlovee · 13/06/2023 00:18

MakesMeFeelSad er…it’s in the judges report…

Well given that this thread appears to be discussing morals as opposed to the law (she broke the law…) I would say that your distinction of one is legal and one isn’t is a bit more complicated than that.

You were clearly referring to the Offences against the Person Act of 1861 which is also relevant in this case and has been referenced.

They don’t have to have a child. Most will have had months to terminate their pregnancy before it became viable outside the womb. Those who for whatever reasons didn’t have that choice still have the choice to not have a child. It can be given up for adoption. I don’t think the argument of not forcing someone to birth a child they don’t want stands either given that this child will need to be born one way or another. So why kill this baby?

So naive.

I was in a women's refuge some years back.

Around 80% of the women in there were pregnant. Various stages, and for most of us the abuse started in pregnancy.

So the choices were abortion (again, we were at different stages, some very early, some very late) or being tied to an abuser for life. A woman can decide to give a baby for adoption, but the father can easily block that and keep the child, then use it to further abuse the woman.

That's just one instance where your little fairy tale ending all wrapped up in a bow would fail, there are hundreds more instances where its not so easy.

Confusedlovee · 13/06/2023 00:23

JaneNormanBag nope I wasn’t
if I were, I’d admit it
im not a liar

JustGeorgie · 13/06/2023 00:24

Apparently she had a few nightmares and was 'wracked with guilt'

Confusedlovee · 13/06/2023 00:24

CoreyTaylorsSoggyTshirt makes a good point
much abuse starts during a woman’s pregnancy when she is vulnerable
it’s common and it’s revolting

Not really as one is murder and the other isn't.

Morally I trust women to make choices about their bodies, even if its something that's uncomfortable for others. There are always reasons and nuances and circumstances that we aren't privy to.

MakesMeFeelSad · 13/06/2023 00:27

Well you can do whatever you want with your body but if you break the law you might find yourself in court

Oh do fuck off. Not sure the current case ended with a fairy tale happy ever after either. For her or her child(ren).

Confusedlovee · 13/06/2023 00:28

MakesMeFeelSad duh really? 😂 no way.
