What's the best cheese you've eaten? I had the best Brie ever.

Dh, myself and dss (adults) were in Wensleydale recently and went to Hawes Wensleydale creamery. They have a part in the ship where you can taste loads of different cheeses.
Dh bought a brie even though we hadn't tried it. We both love all cheese.
A few days later we ate it and couldn't believe how amazing it was. So runny and delicious. The rind was too. I normally leave this. I was surprised an English brie could be so good. It's the best I've had. I know some of their cheeses have won awards not sure if that has I'll check?

What's your favourite cheese? Preferably one easily obtained. I don't think I can get this brie without being in the area? Which is probably a good thing 😉

Cheddar Gorge do their own cheeses (cheddar, duh!) and their oak smoked one is lovely! You can get them from there, farm shops around Somerset or order online.

We are very lucky to have this nearby well as nearby as you can get when you live on the edge of the middle of nowhere. 😂

Twenty mile round trip.

We love Monkey Chop Cheese from Dorset. It’s creamy and delicious.

dreamingbohemian · 12/06/2023 18:09

Whatever you get, a key tip is to leave the cheese out the fridge for 30-60 minutes before eating -- the flavours come out so much more when it warms up.

My personal favourite is St Marcellin, which you can get at Waitrose usually. It's a nice soft cheese with a stronger flavour but not as strong as Epoisses for example.

You reminded me that I have a Vignotte infatuation many years ago. i must try it again soon to make sure it was justifiable!

St Agur - yum. Also Isle of Mull Cheddar.

The Cheese Geek also does an incredible Red Leicester. Actually, all the Cheese Geek cheese is fabulous.

Love cheese a lot.

I love a cheese of any kind, particularly strong French blue cheeses - but my favourite is The Cheese With No Name. It's an incredibly rich camembert-like made in Shropshire. On googling it appears that dozens of cheesemakers have one named similarly - but my one is sold at the Ludlow Farmshop and is an extra special treat when I visit Shropshire in the summer. Glorious.

Bonkersbeyonkers · 12/06/2023 18:45

Belton farm aged Red Leicester, available from tescos. totally more-ish though!
Not to be confused with the smokes Red Leicester.

Cowgirl Creamery Red Hawk Cheese, hands down.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/06/2023 19:00

We had a hamper from Hawes during lockdown. It was all lovely, but the Kit Calvert old style Wensleydale was my favourite.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/06/2023 19:00

From the supermarket, I really like the Castello extra creamy brie.

QuintanaRoo · 12/06/2023 19:04

A Tomme de Savoie that I bought out a wooden cabinet in a mountain pass about a 2 hour hike out of Pralognone de Vanoise. Literally in a field with goats and cows mooching about.

TheFlis12345 · 12/06/2023 19:05

I love soft and blue cheeses but if I had to pick one cheese for the rest of my life it would be a really good extra mature cheddar. Black Bomber is particularly delicious.

HamHand · 12/06/2023 19:11

I recently had a black cheese as part of a cheese board and it was immense. I think it was a cheddar. Black bomber is a good one, as is Waitrose’s Wookey Hole cheddar. Clearly, I like cheddar best

ladydiggins · 12/06/2023 19:20

My OH is French and comes from long-lines of Tomme de Savoie/goat's cheese makers. In fact, his cheese-making antecedents are featured in a photography book by a fancy Paris photographer in the 1930s (who was chums with all the fashionable folk of the time .)

OH bloody hates cheese. Weirdly, I now love cheese after disliking it as a child And the stinkier and runnier the better!

I get complaints if my bits of beloved cheese in the fridge start getting whiffy. DD feels the same as her Dad.

So, I buy the small black boxes of 'select' French cheeses from M&S - they are great and just enough to satisfy the urge. Need to be left out for a good while before eating though. About £4/£5.

My father in law always sends OH back with a good supply of local cheese as he knows how much I love it. Beaufort etc.

Baron Bigod is one of the best things I've ever put in my mouth! They sometimes do a truffled version - possibly a Christmas thing, but failing that, the 'normal' version with a tiny drizzle of truffled honey on a biscuit with some kind of fruit and nuts in it is heavenly!

Occasionally I've seen the dairy advertise they've over-produced and they sell off complete wheels at a bargain price. Unfortunately, I don't live quite near enough to Suffolk to ever pick one up.... probably just as well as I wouldn't be able to stop eating it.
