There’s a wildfire 5 miles from my house

I’m watching the smoke go over the roof. Second big wildfire in as many days on my area. First one started by “wild campers” - this one, obviously not sure of cause yet.

why oh why do people have fires in forests in these temps? (circa 25-30’C here today, with no rain for a couple of weeks)

Fire fighters don’t get paid nearly enough for what they do. Conditions must be awful.

Oh how awful. Are you in the U.K.? Whereabouts is the fire?

TheBiscuitStrikesBack · 10/06/2023 19:47

The Campsies?

buddhasbelly · 10/06/2023 19:48

Yes UK - highlands. I really feel for the firefighters. If it’s humans as the cause again I’ll be so angry. This carelessness is putting firefighters lives at risk.

We had loads here last year. Bloody cigarettes from cars!

GetDownkeith · 10/06/2023 19:50

Knew exactly where you were the second I read it.
It's been so dry up here and its infuriating the number of people lighting fires just now.

buddhasbelly · 10/06/2023 19:51

@PuttingDownRoots yes that too - why just why?? It’s not rained for ages, it’s 30 degrees but sure chuck your fat end in the forest or start your bbq on the ground, both excellent ideas…

They're so frightening. I hope you, your property, your animals, and the firefighters will be okay.

From NZ, I know they appreciate it (the firefighters that is), if you're able, to do baking, make sandwiches, anything like that, that they can grab when they have a minute. If you're feeling helpless, and just want to do something!

Randobelia · 10/06/2023 19:53

I really hope it rains tomorrow. If you're where I think you are then it's so bad. Hope your hour is okay OP.

buddhasbelly · 10/06/2023 19:53

@GetDownkeith it’s horrible isn’t it? The smoke is blowing towards our direction, just sitting watching it go over the house.

OP posts:
buddhasbelly · 10/06/2023 19:55

Our house should be ok - don’t think it’s reached any properties but it’s close to both a care home and a caravan park at the moment.

just really feel for the firefighters.

This happened near us last summer and sadly, locals were evacuated as the fire reached houses.

It's utterly heartbreaking.

Horrific @ShowOfHands

I hope everything turns out ok. I remember watching footage of the fires in Australia last year I think? It was terrifying. Also first person footage from America.

GetDownkeith · 10/06/2023 21:52

We just drove up the a9 passed it looks horrific from the road. The smoke will be the big worry for the care home. The Moy road is closed as well.
Lots of cars pulled over for a good gawp at it one car pulled right round on the dual carriageway in front of me causing a near miss. 😡

buddhasbelly · 10/06/2023 22:54

@GetDownkeith i really despair at some folk. Saw the mot road closed. I wish they’d just ban out door fires as some folk just don’t seem to have the common sense to think how dry it’s been so not sensible to light one

Dh seen a local article talking about being able to see camp fires across Loch Morlich tonight. There are masses of signs in the area explains in really small word why you don't light camp fires in the Cairngorms so banning them doesn't do any good. Some people are just fundamentally selfish and stupid.

QueenOfHiraeth · 10/06/2023 23:11

We've had a fire in the sand dunes near us today. Caused by disposable barbecues despite notices up everywhere prohibiting them
It doesn't look much but actually devastated a large area of dunes and special habitats

buddhasbelly · 10/06/2023 23:24

@GetDownkeith yes you’re right re banning. I saw the posts too about Loch Morlich. I haven’t been there in a year or so. Last time we went it was watch your step walking with the amount of faeces on the beach. Grim.

@QueenOfHiraeth jesus. Why are folk so selfish

OP posts:
buddhasbelly · 10/06/2023 23:26

Our house just reeks of smoke now. We’re due rain and thunder through the night and tomorrow. Hearing the helicopter over head on its way to dump water.

OP posts:
GetDownkeith · 11/06/2023 07:45

Hope your household got some sleep last night you must be pretty worried just now and uncomfortable with the smell.

I haven't been to Loch Morlich for a couple of years that sounds worse than grim. It's horrible to see so many places just being absolutely trashed now.

Randobelia · 11/06/2023 08:02

Did it rain? Dry as a bone here. BBC and Met office both saying rain just now but nothing. Not seeing a lot of updates online.

buddhasbelly · 11/06/2023 09:17

There’s been a small smattering of rain. It’s supposed to develop into downpours and thunder.

with rising temperatures we really need folk to understand the risks of these bbqs and fires straight on the ground. But I don’t really know how you change that mentality.

rain getting a bit heavier.

buddhasbelly · 11/06/2023 09:24

@GetDownkeith seeing relief crews were brought in from Fochabers. That’s quite a fair distance away to be getting relief crew from.

stbrandonsboat · 11/06/2023 09:26

Why is this country so full of thick yobs? 🤦🏻‍♀️😭

Randobelia · 11/06/2023 09:52

That's pretty scary. Hope there's no fires in Moray 😭 They must be stretched extremely thinly.
