There’s a wildfire 5 miles from my house

I’m watching the smoke go over the roof. Second big wildfire in as many days on my area. First one started by “wild campers” - this one, obviously not sure of cause yet.

why oh why do people have fires in forests in these temps? (circa 25-30’C here today, with no rain for a couple of weeks)

Fire fighters don’t get paid nearly enough for what they do. Conditions must be awful.

We have a large park near us with massive sings saying no BBQs and every year 20 or so people set them up. Last year one caught first and a whole field was well alight. I agree people are either thick or just don't think it's going to happen to them.

PuttingDownRoots · 11/06/2023 10:14

I have seen a campfire relight hours after its been extinguished. There definitely needs to be more education about fire safety

stbrandonsboat · 11/06/2023 10:28

I think they need to stop selling those disposable barbeque things.

Why do people need to cook food outdoors anyway? Can't they just take a bloody picnic? I suppose they'd then leave loads of rubbish. Why are they so thick?

We lived near a forest that caught fire about 13 years ago. It burned for weeks, the firefighters did their best but it kept flaring up again.

The Fire Service caught numerous people taking their children to see it, not realising the speed that a fire can travel at, or that all it takes is a sudden change in wind direction.

Some people are unbelievably stupid.

We're on about the 3rd or 4th fire of the year on Marsden Moor on the Pennines near me. A National park ranger suggested to me that he thought it was started by gamekeepers burning stuff (sorry I don't know enough about estate management to be more specific than "burning stuff"). There are several fires there every year, and he says they've never found a bbq.

specialsauce · 11/06/2023 10:45

Firelighting needs to be banned in public places and reserved for official campsites. Disposable BBQs need to be banned also (unfortunately as they are quite handy). The natural landscape is more important than alfresco sausages.

Bring back the British picnic!

Yes, they burn the heather every year as part of game management.

Game keepers do controlled burns in the right conditions.

They don't just set fires willy nilly after weeks of no rain and set the moors alight - because that would be completly counter productive.

Bit ignorant of your park ranger friend to be making suggestions like that.

megletthesecond · 11/06/2023 10:54

Dropped cigarettes are a risk too. I bit the head off of some bloke who threw his cigarette on dry grass last summer.

kelsaycobbles · 11/06/2023 11:06

And broken glass with the weather we have had

Aweful times

Fire crews must be exhausted

kelsaycobbles · 11/06/2023 11:08

It's been so dry that it's not impossible a grouse moor fire has smouldered in the peat under the heather ( the burning is usually done winter/ early spring)

They should know but the climate is changing and what was ok even 10 years ago may no longer be safe

buddhasbelly · 11/06/2023 14:10

Well the rain has not yet started properly. There was a wee shower earlier but now it is incredibly hot and the air thick.

I guess we won’t know the cause of this one yet for a wee while. Agree the disposable bbqs should be banned altogether.

I cleared a ton of broken glass just along from us last week. Why just why. You’re discarding your bottles which is shit in itself but now you’ve also smashed them …

evacuated folk still not home I don’t think

The problem is that big fires can affect the cloud coverage as well so that may be chasing away the rain.
I seen the garden burning on the news. Must be terrifying.
