Thread 8 - TalkLair: “Brewing Russell's teapot”

Continuation of previous threads (thread 7).

The new lair of JTT escapees is all cosy and homey; we have truly settled here. Outside, the garden is blooming with spring flowers. Inside, the hearth is glowing, pictures are up on the walls, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

It absolutely poured here.

We are having Lebanese-style lentil soup and homemade garlic croutons. Maybe some cheese, too.

DeanElderberry · 12/06/2023 18:37

The mushrooms were jolly nice and couldn't have been easier. I was having a low carb day and gobbled them on their own, but a bit of toast on the side would have worked well - there was lots of lovely juice.

angelico53 · 12/06/2023 18:46

Damn you and your proper food!

Angelica is on a closely specified diet before she jets of to sunny climes next week and my son eats mostly high-protein stuff. Meat mostly. So we have gone from sharing a meal every evening, which I would usually prepare, to eating independently. And who can be arsed to cook something nice for themselves? Well, I'm sure there are many examples here - but I can't. PBJ sans J for me.

I'll have a beer or two instead. :)

DeanElderberry · 12/06/2023 18:55

I'm surprised that I mostly do manage to produce a proper dinner for me. I used to find the 'what are you having for dinner' thread in the old place quite helpful - I was reluctant ever to say 'cornflakes' or 'tinned rice pudding' and even scrambled eggs weren't let appear too often in any given week.

lucicle · 12/06/2023 19:05

I love scrambled eggs.

artant · 12/06/2023 19:37

Scrambled egg and tomatoes on toast has become a regular lunchtime meal here.

I really want ice cream now. Specifically, I really want @Britinme ‘s homemade lemon ice cream with strawberry ripple.

Britinme · 12/06/2023 19:39

It is actually very delicious, though also very rich.

DeanElderberry · 12/06/2023 19:51

I love scrambled eggs (had them for lunch today) but like pasta, try not to have them all the time. Ice cream sounds good, but those Wexford strawberries were lush - both they and the spuds are smallish this year, probably because of the drought, but the flavour . . .

In fact, Wexford new potatoes and scrambled eggs would be nice dinner later in the week.

DeanElderberry · 12/06/2023 19:53

I'd better not find out about that ice cream, I've recently learned how to make lemon possett, and need to exercise some self-discipline.

MouseMinge · 12/06/2023 22:12

I love scrambled eggs. I must buy some eggs tomorrow and have some because it's been a while. No rain forecast here at all, no thunderstorm but thankfully also no totally mental hail either. I do love this weather but I'm aware that a bit of rain wouldn't go amiss. The bit we had yesterday was nice but there wasn't enough of it and the plants need some lovely rainwater. Not mine as I currently have no outdoor plants, just plants in general. And crops. All the poor hungry crops.

MouseMinge · 12/06/2023 22:15

I've been watching a bit of Springwatch and nature has gone full-on murdery. Last week I saw a nightjar bird eat one of her fledglings which is not normal and then tonight they showed a bigger fledgling kestrel (I think it was a kestrel) beat the living shit out of its smaller sibling for two hours - they didn't show the whole two hours thankfully - until it was so bloodied that it fell out of the nest to its death. And this is why I avoid natural history documentaries because they're full of murder.

duc748 · 12/06/2023 22:43

Most fowl.

FleshLiabilities · 13/06/2023 06:09

They should rename Springwatch as Deathwatch and just be done with it.

Same here, Mouse. I love David Attenborough but can’t watch his documentaries because of all the peril and misery. I was pleased when our webcam nestbox camera finally conked out, because I always spent weeks worrying about “my” baby birds, what if one or both parents gets killed?!? Best not to know about it, ignorance really can be bliss.

"Nature red in tooth and claw..."

Last Tuesday there were 5 brand new ducklings, adorably following their mum around, in the pond on campus. On Wednesday there were 4. On Thursday there were 3. I saw no sign of the little family on Friday - I hope they're OK, but the trend was not good.

I used to love nature documentaries, but in recent years I find I just can't watch them. It's all too gloomy.

Back to food, the sausages last night were very good indeed. We should make them more often.

I sometimes do a thing with scrambled eggs where I mix it with sauteed potatoes and nduja and it's delicious. Made up one ravenous lunchtime when those ingredients were what I could find to prepare quickly. It's good with steamed greens dressed with rosemary, chopped garlic, olive oil and lemon juice.

SinnerBoy · 13/06/2023 09:17

Last week, Mrs. Kestrel fed Dead Baby Kestrel to its siblings.

SinnerBoy · 13/06/2023 09:17

Everyone seems to have had lovely dinners last night.

😀

DeanElderberry · 13/06/2023 09:32

Lucicle had the true words to live by:

Maybe some cheese, too.

Why don't people put that on their walls instead of all that live love laugh stuff?

lucicle · 13/06/2023 09:38

Could probably lose the 'maybe' if we are adopting it as a life motto.

DeanElderberry · 13/06/2023 09:42

True

MavisMcMinty · 13/06/2023 11:10

Macman “found” an old wooden sign saying CHEESE ROOM in a barn at a job he was doing, and it’s been on the wall over the larder for the last 24 years. I’d take a picture, but would have to dust and de-cobweb and move all my hats to get enough light for a photo.

But can you imagine!?! A whole room, full of cheese?!?

Tricyrtis2022 · 13/06/2023 11:20

Mavis, what a great sign. The most Cheese Central place I've been to is Amsterdam. They have entire shops devoted to cheese, it's quite something.

Britinme · 13/06/2023 12:30

But do they have Red Leicester? Tilsit?

Tricyrtis2022 · 13/06/2023 12:36

Don't know, Brit, but there's a cheese museum there:
