Thread 8 - TalkLair: “Brewing Russell's teapot”

Continuation of previous threads (thread 7).

The new lair of JTT escapees is all cosy and homey; we have truly settled here. Outside, the garden is blooming with spring flowers. Inside, the hearth is glowing, pictures are up on the walls, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

@Tricyrtis2022 that was a quick Monty Python flashback :-)

Kucinghitam · 13/06/2023 12:42

I don't know what it's like post-COVID, but the Wensleydale Creamery in Hawes had a most excellent cheese room; in front of every variety (and there were many varieties) was a tasting plate piled high with a mountain of little cubes of deliciousness. You could practically eat your fill just from tasting a couple of cubes of each cheese.

I want a cheese room. Or even just a visit to a cheese room. The Wensleydale Creamery sounds magnificent.

duc748 · 13/06/2023 12:59

I've been to Hawes. Great biking country.

MmePoppySeedDefage · 13/06/2023 13:21

If you're near London it's worth a trip to the fabulous La Fromagerie just off Marylebone High Street, for its cheeseroom which is huge.

I've started having omelettes for breakfast, and my favourite type is tomato with garlic and parsley. I now make sure to cook the garlic till it's golden...

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 13/06/2023 13:51

I miss cheese.

DeanElderberry · 13/06/2023 14:04

My recent discovery about garlic is how much milder and sweeter it is if I slice/chop it finely rather than crushing it - amazing.

Bint, sorry. I miss being able to eat different sorts of breads and cakes and pasta shapes.

duc748 · 14/06/2023 01:21

OK, breaking my rule of never posting on MN late at night, but for whatever reasons, I've had a Joni Mitchell night tonight, and have let the YouTube algorithm work for me, and how many gems? My Old Man on the piano, one of the greatest love-songs ever written, and this:

The "18 bucks went up in smoke" never ceases to crack me up! 😀

In a weird example of transatlantic psychism, I also had a Joni Mitchell fest yesterday. On the QI talk forums we have a long-running thread called "20 songs featuring" where the person who posts the 20th song on the thread chooses the topic for the next list. I started a new list with "covers of Joni Mitchell songs" and of course ended up after posting my starters with listening to a lot of actual Joni Mitchell. I agree with @duc748 about
"My old man". I posted a cover version of "Case of you" by Graham Nash, sung at the Gershwin Awards last year, which was very poignant given their history.

duc748 · 14/06/2023 14:47

Heh! She is wonderful and there is terrific concert footage available.

Britinme · 14/06/2023 14:50

@duc748 I read somewhere that her voice has improved so much after last year's Newport Folk Festival that she's even contemplating a short tour. I'm honestly not sure I would try and go. In the 21 years I've been here, I've seen a few live concerts of artists I liked when I was younger and not all of them are up to it now.

duc748 · 14/06/2023 15:05

I thought she was in very poor health, doesn't she have some awful disease?

I saw her once at Wembley Stadium (actually on the [pitch!) with CSNY, and she sang Helpless with Neil Young, it was just perfect!

DeanElderberry · 14/06/2023 15:07

However bad her voice is people will turn out in droves - I remember sobbing my way through the vid of her singing Both Sides, Now last year, and the shots of the people around and behind her doing the same thing.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 14/06/2023 15:53

I thought she was in very poor health, doesn't she have some awful disease?

She had a ruptured brain aneurism a few years ago, but I'm not aware of any ongoing health conditions.

Gonners · 14/06/2023 20:28

@duc748 My Old Man on the piano, one of the greatest love-songs ever written...

I was at the Isle of Wight in 1970 and remember her singing that immediately after chastising the crowd for being disruptive.

duc748 · 14/06/2023 22:27

Heh! 😀

MouseMinge · 15/06/2023 03:29

I went to the cinema last night, although now that it's 15th, the night before last. We saw Chevalier which was hugely enjoyable. It's a bit soapy, the young female actors playing Marie Antoinette and Joseph's lover were not great, especially Marie Antoinette, and their makeup was too heavy and wrong. Hair and costume was a bit off too. But. The actor playing the Chevalier/Joseph Bologne was very good and very beautiful, parts of it were quite moving and the music was sublime. It was rather depressing that there were only four people in the cinema. For a while it was just Snoop and me but then a couple turned up and I greeted them, "Hello cinema buddies." It's been a couple of months since we've been so it was really nice to be there again. The reason we haven't been is because of many, many shite films.

Next up is the new Wes Anderson - can't wait! - and I may see Mega 2. The trailer was hilarious and a million miles from taking itself seriously. Yes to extinct megalodons in all their big killiness.

Britinme · 15/06/2023 03:32

I really want to see the new Indiana Jones movie when it comes out on June 30th. Our nearest cinema is now so luxurious that it has seats that allow you to lean back in the chair and put your feet up so if it's not a gripping movie it's far too easy to fall asleep.

Kucinghitam · 15/06/2023 10:23

We're currently re-watching the first Good Omens series, in preparation for season 2 in July. I'd forgotten how good David Tennant and Michael Sheen were in it, their chemistry was just fabulous. Also, this time around, I'm not sort of constantly looking for how the screen does/does not deviate from the book, and just enjoying how the makers have brought parts of it up-to-date. I'll be interested to see what they do in season 2 when they no longer have the book to follow.

(Still prefer the book, of course).

This one is a bit of an eye-opener for me. I always wash new clothes/bedding before use because they often smell and feel odd, as if the fabric has been coated in something. I thought everyone did the same, but apparently not.

To wash all new clothes? | Mumsnet

So many divided opinions on this! So it’s all in the title- AIBU to wash all new clothes? For adults, not babies! I have a pile of new holiday clothes...

MouseMinge · 15/06/2023 10:54

@Britinme I knew there was another trailer I enjoyed. I was very much of the opinion that I wouldn't be seeing the new Indiana Jones film because he's just too old for all those shenanigans but the trailer was lots of fun with added Phoebe Waller Bridge so it's highly likely I'll be heading to the big screen for it. Mission Impossible, though, looks like a happy to miss borefest.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 15/06/2023 11:38

Yes, I'm interested to see how Good Omens turns out without a book or TP.

And we're now enjoying US Ghosts. Once they start doing their own stries and all calm down, it improves enormously.

artant · 15/06/2023 12:23

I occasionally wash bedding before using it (having recently replaced a load thus amounted to washing one of the new sheets because it had a bit of a chemical smell; the rest went straight on the bed) and I usually wash towels before using them but it wouldn’t occur to me to wash new clothes! That thread is an eye opener to me but not it in the way it is to you @Tricyrtis2022 !

I have had eczema from clothes but that was down to the washing powder rather than unwashed new clothes.

Tricyrtis2022 · 15/06/2023 12:41

In my defence, I'm not ocd about washing new clothes, but have sensitive skin and the fabric of unwashed new stuff can make me itch.
