Do cats and foxes usually play??

Just caught next doors cat having a rip roaring time with a fox in our back garden. Playing exactly the same way as 2 cats would. Never seen this before in my life! Is this normal and I'm just sheltered in the cat / fox relationship world?

Ooh yeah they do. Foxes are so playful. But in a minute you’ll get someone come on and say they are cold blooded killers and that cat is going to get its head ripped off and stuck on a fence post…

weknowfrogsgotralalalala · 07/06/2023 21:36

I’ve never known them to play. Our cat chases the local fox out of our garden!

FancyNanci · 07/06/2023 21:36

I doubt that it's common. Did you video it?

sunshineandshowers40 · 07/06/2023 21:37

Our cat has been known to play with the local foxes.

Indoorcatmum · 07/06/2023 21:37

Yup, it happens! How fun :)

JorisBonson · 07/06/2023 21:38

I wish I had! I was stunned. No fur flying or screeching, was just 2 pals mucking about.

Yep our cat plays with the foxes, when I first saw it I honestly thought it was going to harm the cat, but they were playing.

At our stables the foxes and badgers hang out together. They are clearly very sociable.

Ketzele · 07/06/2023 21:42

I've never seen them playing together, but I've certainly seen cats and foxes tolerate each other in close proximity - sitting inches apart, for example.

That's amazing! And has made my life a happier place.

Skinnermarink · 07/06/2023 21:42

Our family of foxes love a good mess about with each other. The dad brought a tennis ball over tonight and they’ve had an absolute blast.

booksandbrooks · 07/06/2023 21:43

Mine does, but next door's cat was killed by the foxes so I'm still twitchy about it.

It's made me mega happy! Next doors cat is a sociable little fellow though (and a gannet who can break through microchip catflaps, but that's another story). My boy cat looked on horrified 😂

I came home one evening and found my cat and a fox curled up having a lovely nap together in the sunshine!

Tulipvase · 07/06/2023 21:46

Yes, more likely than with dogs. I read something recently about a stray dog/puppy that was being looked after by a fox. That is apparently unusual.

One of ours played with a fox cub. We saw them one evening having a rip roaring game .

Neongrun · 07/06/2023 21:54

A tolerance exists between the night time foxes and cats who visit my garden. The hedgehog did make the fox scurry when it got too close though. I love my wildlife cam. I left hard boiled eggs out for the foxes last night.

Popfan · 07/06/2023 22:03

My cat chased a fox out of our garden last week! I was pretty impressed as my cat is 12 and the fox about 3 times bigger. The cat came shooting out of the bushes towards it and the fox turned tail and fled!!

verdantverdure · 07/06/2023 22:08

Ours playand hang out with foxes they know but are wary of foxes they don't know

lookingforMolly · 07/06/2023 22:25

My old cat used to chase and get chased by the local fox.. they had a healthy respect for each other.

Startyabastard · 07/06/2023 22:31

Bloody hell! Never thought that would happen

WonderingWanda · 07/06/2023 22:40

My cat is pretty antisocial I imagine he would turn his back on a fox or give it a good angry stare. He is livid that my neighbour puts cat food in a cat proof hedgehog house. He sits sits at the window of an evening getting cross at them!

WotNoUserName · 07/06/2023 22:59

My cat is not friendly with other creatures. We have foxes in the garden. They generally ignore each other. Except when there are cubs and then fox and cat shout at each other a lot. Which can be quite annoying when trying to sleep.

They do only seem to shout at each other though across the garden. Nothing more. Maybe because my cat can be quite feisty when he wants to be.

kirinm · 07/06/2023 23:00

We get fox cubs playing in our garden most years. The cats don't play with them but they are totally fascinated by them and sit outside watching them play.
