Need to buy a coffee machine

CaffineAddict · 01/06/2023 10:36

Please help!!

My coffee machine is unwell, not yet sure if it's terminal 🥲 He's 'turning on, but won't progress to actually making coffee!!!'

(Philips Senseo, light changing from fast to slow but not getting as far as staying on and cup buttons doing nothing)

I'm trying to get him fixed, but no luck so far. We seem to have lost all the small appliance repairers. Throw away culture I suppose, since products got cheaper)

I love him & wouldn't have ever chosen to change from him, but had decided when the day came I'd go bean to cup as I'm fed up of the hassle/expense of getting the (limited range) of coffee pads (they're like tea bags)

He makes a decent size coffee (I'd say 175-200 ml) which I add cream (not milk) to.

I've used Nespresso machines (with pods) but they don't make enough coffee even using 2 pods (& topping it up with boiling water just isn't the same).

Same with filter coffee, it's 'too thin, not enough 'body'.

So I don't know what I'm looking for?? A fuller expresso shot I suppose?!

I'm ok to grind beans separately, but would prefer it was just built in.

I found this, but reading about it on another retailers site, it seems to just 'make coffee' like an American I think, not sure and an Americanism isn't what I'm after.

Op check out San Fransisco Bay coffee beans. Lovely selection. If you can get to Costco they stock some decent beans at reasonable prices.

@CaffineAddict you mixed up my post, I don't mention back flushing.

The gaggia is amazing v easy maintenance.

DistractMe · 02/06/2023 09:12

Not a classic espresso with crema, no. But it will certainly give you small doses of string coffee.

@Trickedbyadoughnut Thanks. which one of the eleventy billion magnifica models did you choose (& why? 😂😂)

Ah yes, the eleventy billion choices - I'd blocked that out! We got the Delonghi Magnifica S ECAM22.140.B in black. Because I wanted a black one, because it was slightly narrower than some of the others, but mainly it was the cheaper end of the range, but still with the bean plus ground coffee option (I drink a lot of decaf so am using the ground coffee for that).

That's a nice thing to say, OP, thank you. He's had a grand day, the Gaggia has made his day/ week/ month/ year!

He uses lots of local coffees roasters, but one he goes back to is Paddy & Scott's Jerry Can. Order online. 👍

@Puffalicious

ill definitely give that a go when I get B2C sorted!

he's going to have a lovely weekend, lucky bloke!

@Moredarkchocolateplease

Sorry the back flush was mentioned on the Gaggia site when I looked up the machine after reading your post.

We have this one and I love it. It’s nice and compact, simple to use and makes excellent coffee (and the milk frother is perfect for making amazing hot chocolate). It’s also not ridiculously expensive especially if you can find it on offer.

It’s not bean to cup so I use pre-ground illy coffee (or order this https://www.monmouthcoffee.co.uk/product/brazil-fazenda-santa-lucia/ with the ‘ground for domestic espresso’ option, if I want a treat).

I ordered the De'Longhi Stilosa about three months ago and love it. Not bean to cup but I grind my beans manually and add. Makes a great cup of coffee and is pretty on my counter!

I KNOW you said you don’t want pods and I KNOW the nespresso has been mentioned plenty of times but the vertuo machines are so much better than the normal ones (imo) and cheaper.

You don’t have to programme the size of coffee you want, it knows depending on the size of capsule you put in. There are loads of sizes and flavours to choose from and it’s really easy to order on the app. They’ll send you recycling bags that you can empty the pods into, no mess, and then pick them up from your doorstep when they deliver your next batch of coffee. I love it.

Moredarkchocolateplease · 02/06/2023 10:45

@CaffineAddict don't worry, I'm guessing my DH is all over that side of things.

He rakes his coffee. 🙄

Moredarkchocolateplease · 02/06/2023 10:47

@CaffineAddict i can't recommend Pact deliveries enough. It's superb coffee esp if you are drinking decaf, I buy the finest grind and I get the most amazing crema on my coffee and the depth and flavour is fantastic.

so much to think about. Yes, I'm a classic over thinker & sometimes envy those who aren't. However, it does usually mean I get the item as I wanted & keep it for many years, so I suppose it pays off, in the end just 🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️at this stage 🤣😂

You know, you're absolutely right! DH is exactly like this- ponders over purchases for eons, which can grate at times with spontaneous me- but he ends up with what he wants and has the item forever. I should have learned from him over the years, really...😳

He's ridiculously happy this weekend, talking about crema and milk temperature 😆. He's a bloody angel, so I indulge him as I sit with my herbal tea (we're so different!).

I know how evangelical coffee drinkers are, so enjoy taking your time and loving what you go for.

PS He's the same about chocolate. You?
