Need to buy a coffee machine

CaffineAddict · 01/06/2023 10:36

Please help!!

My coffee machine is unwell, not yet sure if it's terminal 🥲 He's 'turning on, but won't progress to actually making coffee!!!'

(Philips Senseo, light changing from fast to slow but not getting as far as staying on and cup buttons doing nothing)

I'm trying to get him fixed, but no luck so far. We seem to have lost all the small appliance repairers. Throw away culture I suppose, since products got cheaper)

I love him & wouldn't have ever chosen to change from him, but had decided when the day came I'd go bean to cup as I'm fed up of the hassle/expense of getting the (limited range) of coffee pads (they're like tea bags)

He makes a decent size coffee (I'd say 175-200 ml) which I add cream (not milk) to.

I've used Nespresso machines (with pods) but they don't make enough coffee even using 2 pods (& topping it up with boiling water just isn't the same).

Same with filter coffee, it's 'too thin, not enough 'body'.

So I don't know what I'm looking for?? A fuller expresso shot I suppose?!

I'm ok to grind beans separately, but would prefer it was just built in.

I found this, but reading about it on another retailers site, it seems to just 'make coffee' like an American I think, not sure and an Americanism isn't what I'm after.

heeeeeellllp!! Please 😊

Delonghi dedica. It’s ‘old style’ espresso machine and, while you can just run water through it for americano I tend just to boil the kettle and top it up. Makes great coffee if you use decent beans and has a v small counter footprint, important as I don’t have the space to put in a big machine

@HidingFromDD

i looked at that one earlier & the footprint would be good in my small kitchen! I'm just having another look...

which beans do you think are good?

my next thread is going to be if anyone can recommend any kind of 'trial pack' system/subscription!

thank you

BHRK · 01/06/2023 14:45

Don’t get the pods! More stuff that needs recycling. I’m listing after a delonghi

@BHRK

I've already said, numerous times, I'm looking for a bean to cup.

I've been using a 'pad' machine for years, so coffee goes in neighbours garden box which he does something gardeny with & the tea bag type thing I dispose of, it's tiny.

I like my De'Longhi Magnifica S. I bought it on ebay and it's great.

@Ninjasan thank you. another tuck in that box.

We have a DeLonghi bean to cup and it's amazing. Beans can be expensive but there are good offers and I'm fussy! I definitely buy fewer coffees out now and really enjoy every cup!

@SquirrelSoShiny

which model do you have? Would you buy the same one if you needed to replace it?

I'm fussy too, I'm just not sure where to start with finding what I like in a bean!! 🙇🏻‍♀️I've been (ha ha) stuck with the ever reducing flavours of Senseo pads, so very keen to get back to beans!

in a previous house we had a built in coffee machine, mains water & it took huge bags of beans which the Ex used to order, it was nice enough & too much faff to do anything else.

lost the built in coffee machine with the EX , and as much as I live my coffee, it was worth it!!

I don't enjoy buying coffee out for the coffee, but I have been enjoying sitting out, in the sun, with other people around . Unfortunately that's involved getting dressed before my first coffee, which is NOT ON!

I use these https://200degs.com/pages/nottingham-shop-flying-horse-walk
brazilian love affair. They do sample packs but I just get the big bags of that bean. I’ve also tried some others but that’s my ‘go to’.

you do need separate bean grinder with the dedica though. I wanted that because I wanted the option to use different beans easier. Tbh I just tend to use the same one though

@CaffineAddict re Nespresso not being 'enough', are you aware that you can set the water volume to you liking? So on the lungo setting (don't do espressos), I hold the button down enough to the amount that I like (with room for milk) then let it go. You only have to do that once then it's set. The coffee still tastes good

@BodegaSushi well, I have tried to, it shows the level up high (it's a digital screen on theirs, not like the one in the video), but it doesn't deliver more than a thimble full (well a bit more than that, but not much! ) I'm dog sitting again soon & I'll try again! Someone linked their machine earlier & I'm sure I'm doing what they show, you can't 'hold the button down on my friends one, it's all too digital. I've tried putting the pod back in & running it again, but it wasn't a great result.

I don't want a pod machine myself anyway, but it'll be good to get it working properly given how much time I spend there! 🤣

Nespresso machines are programmable. Program a longer cycle? I use a slightly longer cycle then "standard" and three capsules and fill a large mug with nice thick coffee!

@SOBplus I think theirs is a sage machine, but yes it's programmable - supposedly, I've faffed endlessly, it happily shows a full cup, then does as it pleases!! I'm going to beat it into submission next time I stay (in a couple of weeks)

@SOBplus also I meant to say I've tried 3 &4 capsules and it's still a relatively pathetic amount & I feel too guilty using so many (it's still cheap for dog sitting I Guess!)

HRTeatime · 01/06/2023 16:03

The newer vertuo coffee machines have capsules to make larger cups of coffee op. We mostly use the 230ml pods. The newest machine can fit pods that brew a 535ml carafe of coffee. I prefer the pods, as it means I can vary the coffee. We had a bean to cup at work, and while it was lovely coffee, it was always the same coffee.

@HRTeatime AT least at home I'm fully in control & can put whatever beans I want to!!

Amazon Warehouse is your friend if you want a Delonghi bean to cup. They seem to have loads that claim to have big scratches but I couldn’t notice anything of note on ours which came that way which only made the “acceptable” category.
for example here is the Magnifica S - new is 309 but ones in warehouse from 208.

queenofthebongo · 01/06/2023 16:15

We have a Melitta barista ts Smart. It's amazing. You can get smaller versions but I wanted one section for normal beans and one for decaf.

@queenofthebongo that must be handy if you need both I'm a no caffeine:no coffee kind of girl! But one of my friends can't drink any caffeine due to medication. We tend to meet out, halfway been our houses, but if she was coming here I'd just clean the machine out & only make decaf that day.

NowYouSee · 01/06/2023 23:03

To add - you can look at the descriptions of each of the warehouse items individually and see what the issues are and pick the one you think least problematic. I buy lots through Warehouse and find they normally really overstate the issues.

@colouroftherainbow I definitely come home for a coffee when possible, not the cost, just superior coffee! (Well coffee exactly you my liking anyway!!)

SheDragonheart · 01/06/2023 19:37

What about a Drip Cone coffee, you can make as weak or strong as you like.

@SheDragonheart I don't know how better to explain it, but it's just normal coffee it's too 'thin' to 'hold' the cream/milk.

life was so much easier when I just drank it black 🤣🤣

Hmm you get Brad Pitt with de longhi.

And George Clooney and Jean Dujardin with Nespresso 🤔🤨

TheHandmaiden · 01/06/2023 19:49

Vote for the Delonghi Magnifica. It does need careful cleaning in a hard water area though

@TheHandmaiden I'm in a hard water area (any harder and you could use it for concrete!!) but I have a Harvey Water Softner so it shouldn't be an issue 😊

good thought though!!

I'm smiling at this post. I don't drink coffee- yuck- but smiling indulgently at my DP who is celebrating his half century by stroking his new Gaggia bean to cup machine. 🙈I think he is truly in love. It cost me £550 but he really is a coffee obsessive.

He's had a lovely, cheaper Delonghi I bought him 8 years ago- still going strong and DS1 will pilfer it for student flat- but he has hankered after this machine for years!

Enjoy whatever machine you get, you coffee lovers take it very seriously, so best get researching!

@Puffalicious i want to be married to you!!

I didn't used to drink coffee either, then I just drank it black (much much easier) then ... well here we are, non functioning without a couple of cups!!

if I just stopped I'd be fine after a few days, I've done it before, this having to go out to buy coffee in the mornings is ridiculous!! It won't seem so bad next week as I'll be back at work & I can pick up a cup (or two) on the way.

you're a lovely wife 😊

That's a nice thing to say, OP, thank you. He's had a grand day, the Gaggia has made his day/ week/ month/ year!

He uses lots of local coffees roasters, but one he goes back to is Paddy & Scott's Jerry Can. Order online. 👍

Hoffi · 02/06/2023 01:00

One voice of 'meh' for the Magnifica - I got one before lockdown and couldn't get decent frothed milk out of it for the life of me. Was very underwhelmed and there was zero (0) customer service help from De'Longhi.

In a fit of Friday night weakness I bought a Sage Express Impress from a re-seller on eBay (again, it was from a store with returns/refurbished goods, so about 30% off, plus an eBay deal voucher). I said at the time I'd only have to drink 300 cappuccinos to break even but tbh we were nearly there before the end of the week. Plus you have to use really fresh beans so we're also propping up the local coffee roasting ecomony...

Lavazza Jolie is good
