How many countries have you visited?

A work colleague has just hit her 100th country. She goes on some bonkers trips (North Korea anyone!) and some are amazing- the 5 Stans looked fab.

I came to travel late as I had never been out of England until I was 19. However, for interest really, I started writing down all the countries I have been to and it totals 35.

DD is 22 and has been to 25 already!

I've been to 10 and I'm quite happy with that. No real desire to travel to any that I haven't already been to.

Depends a bit by what your criteria for ‘visited’ or ‘been to’ is?
I used to work for an airline (crew), therefore have been to absolutely loads - if you mean walking on the tarmac of an airport.

If you mean actually staying for a trek or holiday, then obviously it’s a lot less.

Yes, this. Do stops on cruises count, for instance, when you might only be in the country for a few hours?

ValentineGreen · 31/05/2023 18:34

23 countries across 4 continents.
However some some of them I've been to multiple multiple times - about 20 trips to Italy, 5 trips to Australia, 10 to France etc

I have an app where I click on the cities I've been to & it's around 135 now but again this only captured single visit where as I've been to Venice 14 times, Rome 4 times etc

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 31/05/2023 18:40

I haven’t a clue. I’m ex cabin crew, so who knows 😳 I did live in Oz for two years in 2012-13.
Out of making my dds ‘portable’ we dragged them everywhere with us, covering 5 continents. They love travelling.

Simianwalk · 31/05/2023 18:43

But one I have visited over 20 times and another 10 times.

ThreeRingCircus · 31/05/2023 19:03

I've been to 14. I wish I'd done more travelling before having DDs.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 31/05/2023 19:08

Surely in this day and age we should not be boasting about how many counties we've visited, given that many of them will involve flights?

LlynTegid · 31/05/2023 19:20

I think it's 16, of which seven have been visited by train.

LindorDoubleChoc · 31/05/2023 19:35

I'm 60 and have lived all my life in England. I've been to the USA twice, Madeira, Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Austria, Greece, Croatia, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Wales and Scotland. Before I die I'd like to go to Canada, Japan and possibly Australia. I can't see myself doing any more long haul flights other than those three because of the environmental impact. Europe has a lot to offer!

MaidOfSteel · 31/05/2023 19:39

12, not counting the UK. Mostly in Europe, and I've been to the US a few times.

Snowflake760 · 31/05/2023 19:45

21 where I’ve stayed overnight and probably another 5 or 6 where I’ve spent the day , but not stayed eg Gibraltar, Vatican, Luxembourg etc

Lampzade · 31/05/2023 19:55

65- I absolutely adore travelling. Watching ‘Wish You Were Here ‘as a child gave me the travelling bug.

PensionPots · 31/05/2023 20:02

DH has visited somewhere in the region if 120, I have only visited around 30. However a lot of that reason is I have family in Hong Kong and America so quite a lot of leave has been spent seeing relatives.

MrsTerryPratchett · 31/05/2023 20:08

Around 50 depending on how you count, whose definition of countries you take and whether you count the UK separately.

Added one in December. Two more in August this year.

My recommendation is to go to far-flung, exotic places early on so you can add France and Belgium in your dotage. If I carry on it's going to be Djibouti and Uzbekistan with a walker in my 80s.

There's some places I won't ever go so around 100 is my maximum!

My lifelong avoidance of SUVs makes up for it.

Glowly · 31/05/2023 20:16

11, I think...

Scotland, England, Northern Ireland, Iceland, Spain, Belgium, Germany, France, Netherlands, USA, Canada. Not that many really! I'm 27.

Glowly · 31/05/2023 20:19

I love hearing about people's travels! I'd like to go to Italy and Croatia next year.

Somanycats · 31/05/2023 20:20

30 ish. How do people remember exactly?

LanaDelRaybans · 31/05/2023 20:22

196

shivawn · 31/05/2023 20:26

It's in the high 40's I think, just did a quick tally there but I might have lost track of some.

The last couple years we seem to be revisiting places we've already been because a lot of them we haven't seen in over 10 years now. When I was younger though I always wanted to go somewhere new and rarely went to the same place twice.

I've seen relatively little of Europe, less than 10 countries but I'm glad I concentrated on the far flung destinations before having kids because long haul travel is much more expensive these days!

lankyhanky · 31/05/2023 20:29

I'm in my early 30's and I've done 26 countries.

There are online maps you can use to count.

What does "done" a country even mean? You haven't done the country. You've visited it, maybe once, maybe for one day.

Pearfacebananapoopanickle · 31/05/2023 20:37

A disappointing 21 but that's counting multiple visits to different islands eg Greek or Spanish islands as just one country which obviously they are but feel like separate ones! So if it was different destinations prob around 35.
