Parking in Leeds help!

Going to Leeds on Friday. We should have been going on the train but they’re all cancelled so I’m having to drive!

There’s no parking where we are staying. I’ve been looking at car parks nearby but everything is so expensive or gets bad reviews for car windows getting smashed (Maude street). We need parking from Friday morning until Saturday night.

are there any restrictions to parking outside of town and then getting the bus in. I have a friend in pudsey but don’t want to go over there to park outside hers. Can I drive to Sheepscar and leave my car somewhere and get the bus in - is that an okay area? Or chapel allerton?

help! I booked the train so I didn’t have this scenario.

There's a park and ride just off the M1 at stourton.

HatchetJob · 31/05/2023 13:04

I’m shocked it allows overnight! I use the one in York all the time and it doesn’t!

Didn't realise that was strange ! I guess York is much more touristy and I wouldn't be surprised if people had tried to sleep overnight in the park and ride 😂

MagpiePi · 31/05/2023 13:42

I was going to say use Park and Ride too. I didn't realise they allow overnight stays, but that is really good if they do.

There used to me masses of free parking in Headingley, but that may have changed in the last few years.

This might help:

@EauNeu youre a lifesaver, I really didn’t want to drive into the centre! This also means I don’t have to work out the buses either 😂

There's another park and ride at Elland Road, just off junction 2 of the M621. 5 min bus into town. I wouldn't drive into town at the moment if you paid me, roadworks everywhere and centre pretty much inaccessible from the south by car!

garlictwist · 31/05/2023 15:42

Some of the parking in Headingley/Hyde Park is residents only (I live in Hyde Park) but plenty of exceptions. You'd be fine leaving your car on a residential street around there and getting the bus in.

Brendabigbaps · 31/05/2023 15:49

You won’t be able to leave your car in chapel allerton, the carparks are all short stay to stop people doing that and on street is the same in the centre.

your best bet is to park in one of the many carparks in the centre (trinity, station, etc) and pay! Because that’s what this is about, not paying.

kierenthecommunity · 31/05/2023 16:16

The park and rides don’t operate at the weekend anymore as far as I’m aware. So you’d have to get a taxi back - but it wouldn’t cost that much.

There’s not a lot of free on street parking in Sheepscar as it’s so near the city centre. Where are you going/staying?

You could dump your car on a residential street in somewhere like Chapeltown, Chapel Allerton or Scott Hall (both on main route with reasonable bus links) you’d run the risk of it being broken into obviously but that may or may not happen anywhere.

kierenthecommunity · 31/05/2023 16:21

…although that might just be the Elland Road P&R thats no longer on a Sat/Sun from a quick Google (plus the 51/52 bus goes right past it so you could get that)

NillyNoMates · 31/05/2023 16:36

Park near the secondary school in LS11 and get the bus into town.

RedHinge · 31/05/2023 16:39

I really didn’t want to drive into the centre
My experience in Leeds is that if you miss a single turning you end up in the city centre like it or not.
There is a Holiday Inn that allows you to book a space even if not staying there.

STLLAP08 · 31/05/2023 16:42

The app "Just park" is great. I've used it a fair but has peoples drives you rent or proper car parks I prefer drives. You park then get an Uber in

LittleFreakJezebel · 31/05/2023 16:47

Stourton park and ride is definitely still open on a Saturday I think.

You couldn't pay me to drive into Leeds city centre these days, I've always thought it's the worst city in the UK to drive through and the amount of road works at the minute would make it 100 times worse.

Ouchiebum · 31/05/2023 16:49

I would park in Wakefield sainsburys and get the bus in. Goes every 15 mins and costs £2 each way. Takes about 30-40 mins

salto · 31/05/2023 16:51

Parking is tricky in Leeds. Trinity Leeds car park might do long stay and is as secure as any. Park square is parallel parking and a short walk into the city centre

I wouldn’t leave a car in sheepscar, might be alright in Chapel Allerton. Stourton park and ride is open Saturdays

Or this. The bus is the 110

MHandwork · 31/05/2023 16:53

Which Sainsbury’s? Marsh road or the other?

HatchetJob · 31/05/2023 17:00

I drove in Leeds city centre 20 years ago and I’m scarred for life!
one of the park and ride is open Saturday so we’re going to use that! It’s cheap as well as they don’t charge for children.

I’d have said Marsh way as then you can walk to the bus station

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 31/05/2023 17:09

Stourton P&R operates Monday to Saturday only. Elland Rd and Temple Green are only Mon - Fri.

If you're parking in Wakefield and getting the 110, then The Ridings Centre is cheap to park overnight at weekends. Or park at Merchant gate and get the train to Leeds (< 15 mins), parking is secure and easy, and about £7/24 hrs at the weekend.

If you want to be closer to Leeds, I think you can park at the multi-storey at Leeds Dock for £20 all weekend, the get the Water Taxi into town (donations I think) Citipark Leeds Dock

Driving in Leeds hasn't got any better in the last 20 years! Stourton P&R is the one open on Saturdays. You get to it from M621 J7.

pompomdaisy · 31/05/2023 18:52

Leave it in my cul de sac if you like. I'm chapel Allerton Potternewton. I can keep an eye out.

Hoppinggreen · 31/05/2023 18:55

I always park in Trinity. From where I come into Leeds I can turn off before I have to try and get through the middle. I used to like The Lights but I think part of the route is closed and diverted so Trinity is best for me
