As the question says. In a normal week.

I love these threads! So not my experience of any body I know in real life! Maybe people who drink don't like to fess up?

I was about to say the same thing. MN is renowned for competitive under-drinking.

Probably about 3 bottles a week, more than I 'should' but I'm not concerned. And yeah, most people I know drink similar. It's only on MN that people seem not to drink!

Maybe it’s a generational thing? I’m in my 20s and my friends all drink a lot less than our parents (in their 50s and 60s).

I’m in my 50s and a lot of my friends don’t drink at all now, most only drink sparingly and I don’t know any really heavy drinkers.

None.

During the winter, none per week. Between May and September, average of around 4-6 units a week.

coxesorangepippin · 30/05/2023 22:11

About a bottle and a half of wine

Flippersmum · 30/05/2023 22:11

@ktpoo I'm sorry. I hope you find the strength within you to stop soon. Because you are worth more than this and you deserve a sober life. 💐

I disagree. I’ve noticed a big change over the past 5-10 years in the drinking behaviours of many friends and acquaintances. It might be just because I’m middle aged and therefore so are most of my acquaintances. Middle age seems to be a time when lots of people (particularly women) start to find alcohol doesn’t agree with them and makes them feel rubbish. I also know quite a lot of people who have reflected on their relationship with alcohol and realised there is a problem there which needs to be addressed. But it isn’t just middle aged folk- I know quite a few late teen and twenty-somethings who are teetotal. This would have been practically unheard of in my social group when I was a youngster in the 90s! The youth of today are a lot more health conscious than we were back then.

I think lots of people are learning that, while alcohol can be pleasant and enjoyable, it can also be incredibly damaging and dangerous for some, both physically and mentally. I admire those who decide to tackle problem drinking.

BrassTrim · 30/05/2023 22:34

None. But until a year ago, 5 bottles a week.

LardyDee · 30/05/2023 22:39

I'd say average four bottles of wine a week.

I'm not sure what is to be gained from this exercise! We just have a random list of predictably different levels of self-reported consumption with no context or suggestion that it's at all representative.

beeskipa · 30/05/2023 22:49

None in the average week.

I drink occasionally - maybe 1 or 2 drinks post-work once every couple of months with colleagues. And then maybe ... 4-5 nights out a year? Usually for a work thing or visiting DH's irresponsible lunatic lovely friends haha, where I'd drink a LOT.

I've never really been able to count my drinking in a 'XX per week' way, no Friday night G&T or regular glasses of wine with a Sunday dinner or whatever - but I certainly had much more frequent big nights out with binge drinking (and drugs, so I'm no puritan) when I was younger. I just got older and stopped being able to tolerate hangovers and half my friends have had kids so the big nights out stopped, too.

Now I can go a couple of months without having one drink at all and I don't really think about it.

I think (as a broad average) you're probably right with this!

My parents' circle/people I know through work of their age (mid-50s) have these quite regular, common and weirdly gendered 'norms' for drinking (men= pints after work, women = glass or two of wine of an evening). But I just don't know anyone my age, early 30s, who drinks that regularly. I don't know anyone who could tell you, oh yeah I always have at least 1 bottle of wine a week - like it's a given that they'll have a few glasses every week. I know lots of people who drink to excess and probably are doing just as much damage, but it's in one-off nights out rather than as a regular fixture of their week. That feels really alien to me!

CalloohCallayFrabjousDay · 31/05/2023 07:02

In a normal week, nothing. If I'm in holiday or dd is away then I might have a couple of glasses of lager or wine. But that's a once every 6 months thing.

sawandnotseen · 31/05/2023 08:21

Too much! Bottle of white wine and a few Lemoncello Saturday evening. My friend drank the same. We had a healthy day with a 6mile walk and dinner before though!
Nothing since then but am seeing a friend tonight and we will probably drink a bottle of wine each, over dinner and natter.
Friday, I'm going out, so will drink a bottle of wine at least.
All of my friends drink about the same, if not more. Many of my friends and my sister (54) drink every evening....a couple of glasses of wine or a few beers.
If it matters, im 52 with adult children who don't live with me anymore.
No health issues apart from perimenopause.
Why are you asking?

sawandnotseen · 31/05/2023 08:34

Oh, my 20 something yr old children and their partners hardly drink and when they do, it's much less than me and their dad and his partner.
I was at my close friend's mum's funeral a couple of weeks ago and all of my friends were drinking heavily from 3pm.
My mum (75) is, and always has been, tee total, my dad (80) very rarely drinks- he enjoys alcohol free beer.
I wonder how my sister and I became such big drinkers.
I know that I drink too much over the recommended units but I get health checked regularly and all my organs are good, blood tests normal. Cholesterol is fine.
I'm 'ideal weight' according to BMI. Same size as I was at 18. Same measurements. Only ever put on weight when I was pregnant and lost the weight within 6wks after both births. Didn't drink at all whilst pregnant and BF.
Exercise regularly and eat very well.
Do enjoy a drink though!

Thepleasureofyourcompany · 31/05/2023 08:44

Yeah my friend was slim and energetic. Ended up frying her liver on wine and had to have a transplant. No clue until she started going yellow and by then it was too late. Not surprisingly I keep a careful eye on my drinking. The fascinating thing about her situation is people are desperate to know how much she was drinking so they can measure their own 🍸 against hers.

EversoDisorganised · 31/05/2023 08:57

As a mid 50s person, I recognise that "men drinking a couple of pints after work, women drinking a couple of glasses of wine of an evening" thing from days gone by, it was fairly normal 10 years ago when we were in our 40s. But I only know one or two people that do that now, most have either give it up totally or just have the odd drink at the pub or for a special occasion, drinking at home just doesn't seem to be a thing any more.

SallyWD · 31/05/2023 09:00

Some weeks nothing, some weeks a couple of glasses of wine maximum. I used to be a big drinker but can't be doing with hangovers now.

GeekyDiva80 · 31/05/2023 09:30

Never a big drinker. All of a sudden my drinking has escalated to a bottle a night 😳 since I moved in with my DP. We don't watch TV, just talk and listen to music. It's very nice, but unfortunately I've got into a bad habit trying to keep up with him as he loves a few glasses of wine a night.

However, he is an enormous 20 stone, 6.2 foot - 27 year old hardy mechanic, at least 3x my size, and I'm a 5.5 - 9 stone 43 year old!! Needless to say I'm suffering far more than him. It doesn't even touch sides with him.

I'm normally really fit and healthy, so I am not sure what I'm thinking by suddenly drinking like a loon.

We just have such amazing chilled and cozied up evenings. But I need to definitely slow down to a bottle or two a week or my health will definitely start to suffer soon.

waterlego · 31/05/2023 10:10

@GeekyDiva80, it’s great that you’ve recognised that this level of drinking isn’t going to be sustainable for you. It’s a good idea to try and address it sooner rather than later as it will only get more difficult to break the habit as time goes on. Good luck!

Beezknees · 31/05/2023 10:47

Between 15-20 units, so a bit more than I should. I don't drink at all in the week, only on Friday and Saturday nights, and I drink spirits, prosecco or fruit cider. I don't like wine or beer.

Beezknees · 31/05/2023 10:49

The people I know who drink the most are my family members and colleagues in their 50s and 60s. They usually drink midweek.

Beeswood · 31/05/2023 10:53

None, I don't like the taste.

Selfesteem23 · 31/05/2023 11:01

Ten years ago I’d be the one that said me and my friends all drink far more than people on here state . But it’s defo an age thing with many. I just can’t tolerate it. Insomnia, or a few hours, feeling sick the next day, lack of energy for days after. Wanting crap food. Nope not anymore it’s just not worth it.

I love wine and can have a couple with a meal or a social drink, I rarely drink at home and I can’t really drink much spirits anymore. Vodka/cocktails maybe a couple.
