If you won the lottery....

How would you quit your job?

I was musing on this as I bought a lottery ticket.

I like my job but depending on how much I won, I'd probably quit it.

I wouldn't want to go public, so I wouldn't want anyone knowing, nor do I think anyone would believe me, but I would feel uncomfortable lying to my lovely boss!

If I quit my job on the spot, there would be questions and I wouldn't know how to answer them. Plus I have a 3 month notice period and would be leaving people in the lurch!

I couldn't fake another job cause they'd be expecting to know where I was going and to be asked for references.

100% no no no I would NOT

2 days a week working for an international charity. I love the work, the environment and colleagues

GeraltsBathtub · 30/05/2023 08:12

I actually wouldn’t completely quit my job but I would go part time which I think would make it less obvious. You could always say you had personal reasons for quitting eg if you were going to move areas for your new mansion you could say you needed to move for your DP’s job if you have one, or to look after family members or something?

SquashPenguin · 30/05/2023 08:15

My partner is also my boss (for the region). We’ve discussed this at length 😆 We’d do them the favour of taking our work vehicles back, take everyone in our office out for a drink, then just walk away. Let head office handle it 🤣

IncompleteSenten · 30/05/2023 08:16

I wouldn't quit my job. I love what I do.

Simonjt · 30/05/2023 08:16

Yes I would, but only because we are planning a move abroad and this would mean we could move sooner, I would then work once we had moved.

Hecate01 · 30/05/2023 08:17

I'd give a week's notice and use that week to do everything we are not allowed to do, telling customers exactly what we think of their first world complaints would be top of the list. Most people in my workplace have fantasised about this when having a bad day.

NextInLine · 30/05/2023 08:18

I'd work my notice period, but spend that time at work very differently.
There would be a lot more fun in the classroom!

lemonyellows · 30/05/2023 08:20

I would quit now yes. Probably give full notice but would just say I wanted a change in the pace of life.

snoozingbaby1476 · 30/05/2023 08:21

Yes absolutely I would definitely quit my current job. I'd take some time out to get my life in order then do something part time. Ideally term time only as I have kids still in school. Then we could have amazing holidays in the school hols.

Catsmere · 30/05/2023 08:21

I can’t quit, being my mother’s carer, but I would be so glad to have a serious cushion against the day the carer pension ends and I have to go on the dole. (Australian and thinking in a general sense of lotteries).

Sweetladyjane · 30/05/2023 08:22

I wouldn’t. I work part time as a youth worker and I love what I’d do. I’d probably donate my salary back though:

MissyB1 · 30/05/2023 08:23

I would probably carry on, but I do casual work anyway so only do what suits me. Dh would go very part time ( he’s NHS). We wouldn’t tell anyone about the win, he would just say it was on health grounds (absolutely true anyway).

JugglingJanuary · 30/05/2023 08:24

I only have one more year in my nanny job, I've been there 10 years & its so much more than 'a job'

i'd stay for the year, I'm already dreading it coming to an end.

I'd spend the year deciding what to do at the end of the year, it would be a huge relief because health issues mean nannying for young children is virtually possible and people don't want to pay full time wages for wrap around. I'm not interested in being an 'also cleaner & cook' don't mind laundry or dog walking.
so not having to worry anymore would be great.

Meanwhile I'd invest the vast majority only upgrading a few things other people wouldn't raise an eyebrow at.

As for your job. I think I'd just give 3 months notice, then you're not letting anyone down & you're giving yourself space to think. Then just
say something like. 'DH got a new job & now I don't need to work, so I'm not going to 😁'

JugglingJanuary · 30/05/2023 08:24

It's not even a lie if you make him 'Head Gardener'

CornishGem1975 · 30/05/2023 08:27

I'd just give my notice and leave. It's only a month for me and I think you'd probably need that time of stability to get your head around everything.

jacquec · 30/05/2023 08:29

I just said I wanted to enjoy the time with my daughter as she grew up and so was leaving, which was true (albeit not the only reason) and made it sound like I was quitting to be a SAHM.

jay55 · 30/05/2023 08:30

Yes in a heartbeat.
A few years of travel while I'm mobile enough and then will think about what I do to occupy myself.

Beezknees · 30/05/2023 08:32

I'd need to win quite a bit for me to quit my job. A million wouldn't be enough, as I'm not a home owner so by the time I'd bought a house and put enough aside for a decent retirement there wouldn't be much left.

jay55 · 30/05/2023 08:32

I'd just tell work my family circumstances have changed and I can't work my notice.

Enko · 30/05/2023 08:38

My work yes. I'd work my notice and I would support a new person coming in
I wouldn't fuck anything up deliberately.

My volunteer role no I don't think I'd stop that.

RenegadeKeeblerElf · 30/05/2023 08:39

I'm NHS so I'd resign from my contracted role saying I was going to work bank only, then not pick up any bank shifts. No one would notice, and even if they did realise they hadn't seen me for a while they'd just think we'd been on different shifts. DH could easily say he was leaving on health grounds.

Prettypaisleyslippers · 30/05/2023 08:41

I’m 49 and have worked full time since I was 16, yes I would quit my job. Would need to be quite a big win though. £1m wouldn’t be enough

CatMattress · 30/05/2023 08:50

Ooh, I think I'd ask to go part time at first, then see if they'd agree to term times only, when they inevitably said no I'd explain I needed to find something more flexible so was leaving. It's a FTC role anyway, so not too hard to walk away from if you don't need the money.

Like others, though, it would probably need to be at least 3 or 4 million to be able to quit work, though who doesn't fantasise about proper 'fuck you' wins of tens of millions?

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 30/05/2023 09:04

Like a fucking shot! But I’m planning on retiring next year anyway, I’m getting too old for this shit (cover manager at secondary). But years ago when I worked in a different role we all used to joke that we’d do everyday of our leave notice until our boss begged us to take garden leave.

carlottacandle · 30/05/2023 09:14

I'd probably end up quitting. I like to think I'd stay as I'm only part time, but my employer has done some really shitty things to me over the years so I think my resolve would only last until the next time they got my back up! Then it would be the middle finger! It's actually nice to think about as they're very reliant on me at the moment!! I have bought a ticket for the Euromillions tonight, so here's hoping I'm in the position to do it tomorrow!! 🤞🏻🤞🏻
