If you won the lottery....

How would you quit your job?

I was musing on this as I bought a lottery ticket.

I like my job but depending on how much I won, I'd probably quit it.

I wouldn't want to go public, so I wouldn't want anyone knowing, nor do I think anyone would believe me, but I would feel uncomfortable lying to my lovely boss!

If I quit my job on the spot, there would be questions and I wouldn't know how to answer them. Plus I have a 3 month notice period and would be leaving people in the lurch!

I couldn't fake another job cause they'd be expecting to know where I was going and to be asked for references.

My workplace would just never see me again! No dramatics, I’d just never return. Public sector organisation to whom I’m just a number!

Itsvalentino · 30/05/2023 09:17

If I win the Euro Millions, I plan to buy the company I work for and sack the management (family) and then pass on to someone who I know that could run it well (we make a good product) and then bugger off travelling for 12 months.

CordylineHair · 30/05/2023 09:20

I love my job but yes, when I win the Lottery I will quit.

I intend to go travelling and don't need the stress of applying for time off, etc.

Can't wait now (should buy a ticket really 😆)

Justcashnosweets · 30/05/2023 09:24

I would quit with immediate effect..most people I know would do the same. Then I would take some time to figure out what I wanted to instead. I'm a nurse fwiw.

ToeJammed · 30/05/2023 09:29

I would phone my boss to tell him that I'm quitting with immediate effect...while I'm sat in the bar at the airport waiting for my aircraft to take me on an exotic holiday.
I might even send him a postcard if I'm feeling generous.

SD1978 · 30/05/2023 09:33

With glitter........Throw it in the air whilst saying I quit...........

HoleyShit · 30/05/2023 09:34

Yes I'd definitely quit my current job but would do something way more worthwhile, charity/volunteering etc.

SandLResources · 30/05/2023 10:04

100% would quit in a fucking heartbeat and I'd never "work" again.

GiveupHQ · 30/05/2023 10:16

Sweetladyjane · 30/05/2023 08:22

I wouldn’t. I work part time as a youth worker and I love what I’d do. I’d probably donate my salary back though:

”probably”??!

memoirsofatrespasser · 30/05/2023 10:17

Yes. I'd work my 3-month notice, but no way would I stay in my job. I'd be booking first-class RTW flights for Day 1 post-notice!

KStockHERO · 30/05/2023 10:24

I would quit in a heartbeat.

I'd do it all above board, I would write a letter of resignation. I wouldn't mention the win in the letter but I'd be absolutely honest in that letter about what my work environment is like and why I'm looking forward to leaving.
My letter would make clear that I'm in a fortunate financial position and will be donating the salary from my notice period to a women's sex-based rights charity.

I'd work my notice - three months - but basically do absolutely nothing beyond the bare minimal bare essentials.

It's very possible that in the next few years, me and DP may get a significant amount of money coming our way which would allow me to quit my job. So I already have my plans in place. And my letter drafted. 😅

BenCoopersSupportWren · 30/05/2023 10:26

I have caring responsibilities and health issues so could legitimately say my family/health circumstances have changed and I’m leaving with near-immediate effect.

I only have a small mortgage and am happy to live modestly, with the only difference being the ability to divert all my (limited) energy into home life rather than having to “manage” my downtime to keep me well enough to work, so a £1m win would see me well into my 70s or 80s with careful investment.

Carouselfish · 30/05/2023 10:30

I'd set up an old people's home in nice grounds for old people who couldn't afford somewhere nice and old dogs without homes.

DrJump · 30/05/2023 10:30

I might try and buy into my work. It's a small business that could do with a cash injection plus some extra things built into the business. I think the owner would be keen to do what I would like to do too as we have had a few discussions. It would mean I work a little more but I think it would work.

I home school and I would spend a lot of money on the extra curricular classes I know the kids would love but we can't afford.

Oh and travel much more travel.

Carouselfish · 30/05/2023 10:32

So that would be my new 'job'. I'd probably take all my holiday as part of my notice period and leave quietly. No drama. Previous jobs I probably would have told people who were awful, how awful they were.

gamerchick · 30/05/2023 10:32

Doesn't it take a while to get your money anyway? Sure there was an AMA on it once. Something about a special account it has to go into.

CurtainsForBea · 30/05/2023 10:35

I have a colleague this sort of happened to. (Actually she sold an item in an auction that she thought was fake but turned out was very very real...)

She told the office that she needed to be a carer for a disabled child (also true) and worked out her notice.

CurtainsForBea · 30/05/2023 10:40

Anyway- if it were me I would work out my notice (taking as much annual leave owing) and then leave. I would not tell anyone. I detest my job but I like my colleagues alot. I'd take a few of then out to lunch.

Then I would travel every single half tern and term holiday with my Dcs. That is my big dream anyway.

RoseRobot · 30/05/2023 10:46

I'm freelance so I'd honour all existing contracts and not accept any others.

I'd spend my time helping family members choose houses that I'd pay for, and setting up grass roots projects that directly help local people without lots of charity admin absorbing the cash.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 30/05/2023 10:59

I love my (pt) job and hand on heart don’t think i’d resign. I think dh would resign to do a frivolous PhD, though.

shelbabab · 30/05/2023 11:02

I wouldn't leave on the spot I'd hand my notice in. It's only a month. I'd probably ask if I cld go earlier than that. Make up some excuse about my dh getting a new job and we need to move asap. Either that or we've had a large inheritance and I want some time out. Some of that is actually true.

There is no way I would work 3 months though. I'd hand it in and negotiate it down or just tell them my last day will be x. Uv nothing to lose u don't need a reference etc bye bye 👋

MariaVT65 · 30/05/2023 11:28

I would absolutely quit my job. I wouldn’t not want to work, but I’d do some volunteer work for charities.

I’d say i’ve come into some money so have made the decision to focus on my children for now and potentially retrain in something that will better accommodate school hours etc.

SomethingNastyInTheGenePool · 30/05/2023 11:34

Hang on, @jacquec - do you mean you actually won the lottery?? 🍾

Not according to her other posts. She’s self employed

larkstar · 30/05/2023 11:49

Getting a bit ahead of yourself here aren't you!? Cross that bridge when you come to it.

People take career breaks for all sorts of reasons - to care for an ailing parent, to focus on your children (I did this), to travel, to oversee/project-manage building work on the house, etc. You don't always have to come into money to do this - it's possible, sometimes, to rejig your finances or way of life and manage (that's all we did).
