If you won the lottery....

How would you quit your job?

I was musing on this as I bought a lottery ticket.

I like my job but depending on how much I won, I'd probably quit it.

I wouldn't want to go public, so I wouldn't want anyone knowing, nor do I think anyone would believe me, but I would feel uncomfortable lying to my lovely boss!

If I quit my job on the spot, there would be questions and I wouldn't know how to answer them. Plus I have a 3 month notice period and would be leaving people in the lurch!

I couldn't fake another job cause they'd be expecting to know where I was going and to be asked for references.

I’ve always said I’d just walk away. Leave everyone wondering wtf happened to SisterAgatha. Just not go in, email saying “won’t be back” so they know I’m alive… and be gone.

From family, I’d not tell a soul either. No one asks what I’m up to now anyway! Haha!

I'd work my notice and buy a flat in Paris with a terrace overlooking the Eiffel Tower and a small island in Helsinki and possibly a place with a hot spring in Iceland...
I don't play the lottery but I dream!

If say I was going to spend more time with my child, dont think anyone would question that. DH would probably do the same

Mabelface · 30/05/2023 13:37

I'd just say that my circumstances had changed and I'm taking early retirement. I'd be put on garden leave anyway if I gave notice.

Then I'd buy the house I live in from my landlord and get it done how I want it, and buy houses for my siblings and children.

well her husband sure as heck didn’t “need” it

But I’d argue that she sure as heck would have been benefited from the security of employment

her DH does not work either. It's all investment income and he has not worked for decades.

Not sure why people are being snarky. She's extremely well set up and married over 20 years so even if it goes tits up she's sorted.

I just thought it was an interesting perspective, that's all.

I'd quit my job in a heartbeat and travel as much as I could. I'd just say I'd come into some money.

greyhairnomore · 30/05/2023 15:47

The only courtesy I'd give them would be a text to say I'm not coming back ever again.

greyhairnomore · 30/05/2023 15:48

If I won big , say euro millions , I'd give a couple of my colleagues ££ so they could leave too.

Cece92 · 30/05/2023 15:50

I don't think I'd quit but I'd defo reduce my hours to the minimum I could. X

I just said I wanted to enjoy the time with my daughter as she grew up and so was leaving, which was true (albeit not the only reason) and made it sound like I was quitting to be a SAHM.

So your self employment was reaping so much whilst you were also in anjob that you liken it to a lottery win?!

wow!! Impressive!

Mammyloveswine · 30/05/2023 16:17

I wouldn't quit my job.. Not initially anyway!

AnneElliott · 30/05/2023 19:04

I would t quite but would go part time. We often used to do a syndicate in the office and the boss used to say to always put him in for it (and he'd be good for the money) as he was terrified if we won it we'd all leave and he'd be left to sort it out so he wanted to be part of the exodus!

We're public sector and a syndicate in our Department did win the jackpot a few years ago. I think 25 of them got c£60k each. Not enough never to work again but a house deposit for the youngsters and some of the older ones did retire I think.

Boofoof · 29/01/2024 20:51

I'd still work, but very part time, and probably for a charity or research organisation while doing a PhD. I'd want to carry on using my skills/keep up my registration but in a way that also meant I wasn't tied to one place and could travel.
