If you won the lottery....

How would you quit your job?

I was musing on this as I bought a lottery ticket.

I like my job but depending on how much I won, I'd probably quit it.

I wouldn't want to go public, so I wouldn't want anyone knowing, nor do I think anyone would believe me, but I would feel uncomfortable lying to my lovely boss!

If I quit my job on the spot, there would be questions and I wouldn't know how to answer them. Plus I have a 3 month notice period and would be leaving people in the lurch!

I couldn't fake another job cause they'd be expecting to know where I was going and to be asked for references.

MassageForLife · 30/05/2023 11:55

I have an both employed and self-employed, so they would probably assume that I was focusing on my self-employment. Which I might keep going as a ruse, as I too wouldn't want people to know.

Phos · 30/05/2023 12:02

I’d quit. I like my job but I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t have to. I’d probably say change in circumstances and taking some time out to consider my next move. I’m fluent in corporate bullshit.

purplecorkheart · 30/05/2023 12:02

No, I wouldn't I like my job. If it was my previous job though I would.

eatdrinkandbemerry · 30/05/2023 12:08

Well I'm knocking on now so I'd just say I'm taking early retirement 🤣

YukoandHiro · 30/05/2023 12:09

No, but I'm self employed. So I'd just do much less work and only the things I really want to do.

RuthW · 30/05/2023 12:14

I wouldn't quit my job.

Stellawella · 30/05/2023 12:15

I would quit so someone else can do the job and get some job security. I’d stay until the new
person was confident to go on their own which could take 6 months.

I would then volunteer somewhere.

GnomeDePlume · 30/05/2023 12:16

If it was enough I would hand in my notice (3 months) and retire. I'm mid 50s so it wouldn't require explanation.

jacquec · 30/05/2023 12:16

SomethingNastyInTheGenePool · 30/05/2023 11:34

Hang on, @jacquec - do you mean you actually won the lottery?? 🍾

No, but I came into money akin to it (via self employment, as one of MNs stalkers liked to point out 🙂).

BreviloquentBastard · 30/05/2023 12:18

I'd just resign, work my notice period and tell people I was going on to try something new. I like my job but I'd prefer to volunteer and fill my days with hobbies and fun instead of work. I wouldn't be able to just quit on the spot though, I like my colleagues too much to leave them in the lurch like that!

cuckyplunt · 30/05/2023 12:21

I would not tell a soul, least of all my teenage Ed, that sort of money could ruin their lives. It would be nice to be able to provide them with bits of things though, house deposit, fancy wedding, holidays without them really noticing.
Id also get our parish church sorted, sp it lasts another 200 years.

BodegaSushi · 30/05/2023 12:23

I would quit in a heartbeat.

I'd say I'm taking time off for myself, to work through some personal issues and rest and recuperate.

Not really a stretch tbh

CuriouslyDifferent · 30/05/2023 12:24

I love these posts - I find it amazing how many people love their jobs. So pleased for them.

My hobby turned into my jobs then my career and ultimately, I’m now at the end of it aged 54 and about to retire with something like a life changing lottery sized amount in my DC.

From my job perspective, i enjoy what I do, but I’m not going to miss working for others, and will probably continue what I do, for fun and myself and others. Eg. Built an app the other day for some friends who have a particular challenge.

From a career perspective, knowing i had that stashed away in pension pot, meant i didn’t have to ever worry about the long term and was able to go down the greasy pole at work and work less hours to earn just enough for me and my family’s needs.

From the opportunities it provides in the future, I suspect most of it will be bequeathed to my kids, but my partner and I are planning to travel the world (twice) east via land, then west via sea.

The best part has been the choices it’s allowed me to make, and the security and inter generational change it will ultimately bring to my family.

LemonLimeDivine · 30/05/2023 12:27

After 20 stressful years in the emergency services, yes I would quit on the spot.
Would enjoy helping those friends and family who are very close to us but absolutely would not advertise the win or say how much we’d won.

SophiaElise · 30/05/2023 12:32

I won't quit straightaway as I enjoy my job and it gives me purpose.

  1. I'll drop one day to begin with, so will work 4 days a week.
  2. I'll find a way to get out of doing on calls.
  3. Then I'll take a 6 month sabbatical to see how I feel not being in work.
  4. I'll either keep extending my sabbatical and eventually resign, or I'll bring forward my retirement date by 10 years (depends on how #3 pans out)
  5. If I take early retirement I'll get involved in two charities I already support (one local, one medical) which should keep me busy.

In all honesty although I play every now and again, I secretly hope I never win the euromillions (the lottery and set for life OK) as I think my life would end up worse than it is post-win, for all sorts of reasons...

This is interesting.

My BF married a multi millionaire and she quit her job. Said it was not fair of her to take up a role when someone else needed it more than her.

I thought that was a very good point.

SouthLondonMum22 · 30/05/2023 12:55

I wouldn't quit. I love my job.

ToHellBackAndBeyond · 30/05/2023 12:56

I'm self employed to bring in enough to support my family whilst caring for disabled husband and older parents. It would be lovely to have enough money to ease back on the self employment and have more time with family instead.
Secretly I'd love to be wealthy enough to travel and to buy healthcare for everyone instead of waiting on the NHS. I'd also like a Bentley.

dubyalass · 30/05/2023 13:03

I would quit and start volunteering or do self-employed consultancy. Or go very part time. Or take a sabbatical while I thought about what I wanted to do.

well her husband sure as heck didn’t “need” it

But I’d argue that she sure as heck would have been benefited from the security of employment

mamabear715 · 30/05/2023 13:17

Well.. I don't know why I'm replying, lol, don't work, don't do the lottery.. and if I did ever win a substantial amount, I would be the boring one who would share with family & maybe see if I liked a holiday abroad.. (never been.. told you I was boring!)

I was going to say, it only ever seems to be women who quit their jobs because ''it isn't fair'' and that they ''don't need it''.

the80sweregreat · 30/05/2023 13:20

I'd buy my son his own place! I'd give my lovely friend some ( lots) of money too
All depends how big the win is for any other ideas!

I read it that way too!

FourFoxSake · 30/05/2023 13:24

I'd tell work I was retiring... at 44. Nice and enigmatic so they all wonder how I could afford to retire so early.

I'd then tell family I was 'going freelance and part time' and build myself a private office which is really a snug for me to spend the day in peace. Possibly with a secret back exit so I could pretend I was in the office all day but really I'd snuck out to do exciting (to me) things.
