Friend regifting expensive gift

EachandEveryone · 28/05/2023 20:29

I dont know why Im annoyed. Im probably wrong. We bought a gift for our friend it was£130 and it broke down after three months. Luckily John Lewis were able to refund it and we bought a replacement. Our friend has decided it was a nice gift but doesnt want it anymore (Im deliberately being vague but its not needed anymore) she’d rather have the money. The second company we bought the replacement from has a very good return policy so our friend has ended up with the money from the original item plus the replacement gift which is still in its box. So not exactly regifting but I suppose that is what she will do with it as its surplus to requirements🙂

Have you paid for it twice?

I can't figure out how she has the item and the money either.

If you've paid twice op just ask her for the item.

Pteryl · 28/05/2023 20:38

So you got a refund for the original gift then used that money to buy a replacement. You’re not out of pocket (apart from the gift, but that was what you originally planned to spend).

Let’s pretend it’s a bread maker and she can no longer eat bread. You agree she doesn’t need it, and for some unfathomable reason the company refused her and let her keep the gift. She’s happy as the gift from you is now useful as it’s cash rather than an item she can’t use. I can’t see what you’re upset about?!

Fairyliz · 28/05/2023 20:42

I’m another one who is confused how she ended up with the item and a refund?

HDready · 28/05/2023 20:43

Did you give your friend the money from the JL refund and also give them the replacement from the second company?

EachandEveryone · 28/05/2023 20:45

I suppose upset isnt the word and no, Im not out of pocket as I got the first refund, rebought the gift with it, gift no longer needed, gift refunded in cash and gift still boxed up. Probably going to be sold on when Id rather see it going to a charity or something. I get its not my business its just not what I would do.

This! Just why??

CC4712 · 28/05/2023 20:49

I'm clearly the only one utterly confused as to why they replaced it AND refunded it?

EachandEveryone · 28/05/2023 20:50

Oh god know i dont think we did the refund went to my account and i re bought it. Then she decided it was pointless getting a new one it was better to have the money.

sorry im confusing myself now.

No I think there are two of us who are confused 😂

Yes

Why?? 😵‍💫

SheilaFentiman · 28/05/2023 20:54

Ok.

So you bought one, it broke, you got a refund.

You bought the same item from a different shop and gave it to her.

She then decided she didn’t want it, contacted the second shop and they refunded it but didn’t require the item returned.

Weird on the part of the second shop, but hey.

You gifted it, you can’t say what she does with it afterwards, though I would also feel odd!

Make that 3 of us.

I've read it 10 times and cannot figure out why company 2 refunded and let her keep the item, when it was company 1s item that broke, got returned and refunded.

ArcticSkewer · 28/05/2023 20:54

omg did your friend send the broken one to the new company for a refund?

Erm that's pretty shitty

HarrietJet · 28/05/2023 20:55

I'm pretty sure that didn't actually happen! Op is very confused.

Azandme · 28/05/2023 20:56

It was a gift - that she now can't use, and rather than her have the benefit of her gift some other way, you think she should give it to charity and essentially have no gift?

That's weird.

So if we replace "gift" with say a jacket, this is your position: you bought her a jacket, she's lost weight so it doesn't fit. She decides to sell it on FB and buy something that does fit... You think she should just give the jacket to charity.

Yep. Still weird.

Yes spot on! I know its now out of my hands but I would love for that gift to be passed on as it was a great useful thing to have and its brand new. The second company obviously give good customer service 😃

Actually one online retailer does this alot. They can afford to.

can you tell us the retailer as I’d like to buy from them in future!

pippinsleftleg · 28/05/2023 21:04

I think that as she has the money refunded and the item she should give the item to you.
