We cannot staff teachers. The conditions are not good. I speak from.experience. There needs to be a body in front of the class. If we do not have the people here, what do you suggest?

Shadowboy · 28/05/2023 17:16

Teachers are leaving in droves. This is what happens when a profession is vilified. For some reason much of the public dislike teachers. The lack of support means many leave. I worry for my children - what will the quality of their education be like in 8 years then they sit their GCSEs

BCBird · 28/05/2023 17:17

If we made it more attractive for people to remain in teaching we would not need to recruit from.abroad would we? Lack of parental.support, people not valuing education, etc WTC,the list goes on.

Whatt · 28/05/2023 17:20

Why dont they give the £10,000 to UK students as a bursary to get them into teaching?

BCBird · 28/05/2023 17:22

Shadow boy u r so right. I in my early 50s and had to drop.a day as I just can't take the.pace anymore
I like my job. The increase in pupils' poor mental.health, the lack of support due to cuts is really making the situation untenable for many pupils. If u can afford private,u r ok but this is not an option fir many.

BCBird · 28/05/2023 17:23

There are bursaries for many subjects for UK graduates. We recruit but can't retain, why? See my details above

They tried something similar but people trained to get the £26,000 tax free bursary and then didn’t actually teach…..

I think it's more of a priority to retain teachers. Many, many people train to be teachers but don't stick with it long enough to get very good at it.

Schools also aren't given enough budget, so experienced teachers at the top of the pay scale find it hard to change schools or sometimes find themselves being managed out.

It's not a bad starting wage but the difference between a newly qualified and a teacher with decades of experience is only about £10k.

mrsblueskyeye · 28/05/2023 17:30

I used to work for a company that 'trained' OOT so they could work here. The majority came from the African continent. The vast majority left teaching after a very short time.

They were used to teaching children who really WANTED to learn, they come here to be faced with disruptive, unruly hooligans. They couldn't cope.

This was about 20 years ago, I doubt things have improved.

Train them obviously

Whatt · 28/05/2023 17:31

I work in nursery and often think I would like to go into teaching but I don't have a degree and wouldn't know where to start.

If they paid for my training and gave me a bursary I would do it and stay.

Maybe they could write off your student debt if you work for 5 years post training.

There should also be more pathways into teaching.

I agree

SerendipityJane · 28/05/2023 17:11

But remember, net migration needs to go down so we'll ban students and maybe not sort out the clusterfuck that is this country so a few thousand bugger off to Aus to balance the books.

Jeez. You couldn't write this shit !!

We do have the people here. There's a mass exodus from the broken system. Perhaps fixing that so people who loved the fundamentals of the job stayed 😂

Why dont they give the £10,000 to UK students as a bursary to get them into teaching?

Because in some subjects they already get in excess of 20k. So they train, do a year or so, realise how shit it is currently and pop off with their free house deposit into the private sector.

Speaking as someone who used to train trainee teachers in schools as part of my (old) role. I also popped off at Xmas after 10 years because I didn't recognise the job anymore.

BCBird · 28/05/2023 17:42

Squidger45- do true. Ad to.those say train them, well not as many people are applying and of those that do a significant amount fo not stay in teaching. This is the issue. You have to ask why.

Maireas · 28/05/2023 17:43

The problem isn't recruiting or training teachers. It's retention. They don't stay for more than 5 years. That's the problem, which pp have alluded to.

Lisbeth50 · 28/05/2023 17:43

Perhaps they could spend the money raising the pay of experienced teachers & improving their working conditions.

Interesting how we can't afford to pay teachers properly but we apparently can afford money to attract teachers who haven't trained in our system. 🤔

Piggywaspushed · 28/05/2023 17:44

I wonder whether these people will be able to bring family, since Suella says overseas students can't.

fairywhale · 28/05/2023 17:44

Absolutely this will be going the same way as the NHS, with standards continually erased and people with poor language skills and of cultures where human life, children and particularly females mean nothing doing crucial life and future defining work with children.
Some vile dick will have been paid a substantial amount for this ruinous idea.
It's happening in the police as well where people that don't speak much English and have a superficial understanding of things life or criminality in the UK are set on solving or preventing crime.
Filling jobs with completely unqualified people. Anything other than improving standards here to help retain staff and spending on training capable people locally.

Creamyoda · 28/05/2023 17:45

The 10k is for relocation expenses, pretty sure the NHS do similar for clinical staff.

They already do, for many subjects. It doesn't work.
There is something deeply immoral about stripping another country of its teachers to plug the gaps here which have been caused by decades of systematic underfunding of the system.

Maireas · 28/05/2023 17:48

This. 💯

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 28/05/2023 17:50

Or just pay UK teachers more, then we can stop nicking teachers from countries that probably also need them.

Whatt · 28/05/2023 17:50

If they can't afford to pay teachers more in salary then perhaps there should be more incentives to stay.

For example;

  • Keyworker housing for rent
  • Free childcare
  • Free dental treatment
  • Help with deposits for buying a home
  • Paid for or heavily discounted public transport

This could be dependent on how many years you have been there.
