How Many Of Your Senior School Teachers Went On To Marry Their Students?

How many of your senior school teachers had inappropriate 'relationships' with students or went on to marry them?

To my knowledge 3 male teachers at my school went on to marry students. 2 others had 'relationships' with 6th form girls. It wouldn't surprise me if there were more but I just don't know about them. This was in the late 80s / early 90s. Nobody was sacked but one left of his own accord and carried on teaching.

Was this common?

I was groomed by a teacher in his 50s when I was 13 to 14. We had not had sex although there were a lot of discussions about sex and he egged me on to have sex with other boys. He kissed my cheek a couple of times, stroked my hair and hugged me on a couple of occasions. I had mental health issues and was in counselling and the counsellor saw the red flags and reported it. Social services interviewed me and I answered honestly about the conversations and interactions we had been having and she explained it was grooming. Police were informed and I found a letter in my Mum's room saying no further action would be taken due to my parents' decision for me not to have to go to court. He received some kind of warning at school. Apparently he had admitted an inappropriate relationship. I was treated quite badly by some of the other teachers who he was friends with. It was a very awkward few years until I left. It took a long long time to overcome. In fact I still don't think I'm 'over' it. I feel deep seated shame to be honest. I met up with him when I was an adult and that helped me to see him for what he was. An unattractive, arrogant old man. I'm incensed now I'm older that he was allowed to continue working with children.

My sister's friend (along with another student) was sexually abused by a very popular teacher at the same school. This had a lot of evidence in the form of text messages between the teacher and the students as well as some forensic evidence. This resulted in the teacher going to prison. Many staff members also treated the victims in this with disdain and they had a very hard time with other students.

This was all between 1998 and about 2002.

Wow. Our head girl in 1998 (6th form) married a teacher. Kind of assumed it was unusual!

CharlottenBurger · 25/05/2023 20:35

One of my friends of 6th form age married one of her teachers, a young one. They have 3 kids now.

@Maireas @CosmosQueen were we
At the same school? In a town beginning with S. Blue uniform.

nationallampoons · 25/05/2023 20:35

One. He was our maths teacher from year 10 onwards.
I left after year 11 and a school mate stayed on into sixth form. They married the September after she left sixth form.

He was mid 30s and she was 18. Vile

allthewoes · 25/05/2023 20:37

Only one that I know of. He was about 25 when she was in 6th form and they're still married 30 years later.

No, not the town or uniform!
Some girls in the town felt sorry for us but at least it was a harrassment/exploitment free zone!

A lot of music and art teachers! I don’t know any marriages but certainly at least 3 inappropriate relationships in my year group - a 14 year old girl with a mid-20s male music teacher, it went on for a year or 2, he was sacked but not for the relationship.
A PE teacher had a fling on a school trip with a 16 year old, then went on to have a longish relationship with another student soon after she left school.
This was 80s and gossip-worthy but not scandalous at the time.

WeThreeKingsofOrientAre · 25/05/2023 20:42

I left Sixth Form in the mid 1990s and heard of at least 3 male teachers in relationships with female pupils and 1 female teacher in a relationship with a male pupil. One of the male teachers parted from his wife and child and went on to become engaged to the female pupil. It did not seem to be a secret or something that attracted any public sanctions at the time.

Tiredmum100 · 25/05/2023 20:58

Art teacher, think he was seeing one pupil and married another one. This was the late 90s. Crazy how many people on this thread have similar stories 😞

Nofixedabodewell · 25/05/2023 20:59

I also knew someone who had an affair with her English teacher in sixth form. When she left school they got married and moved to another area. He was in his mid thirties! She left him after a few years.

GreatBigBoots · 25/05/2023 21:02

Early 90s. New Head of 6th form (female, 30s) befriended a group of 6th form girls. She gave them special treatment at school and was very open about the fact that they went to parties at her house and stayed over etc. She was also friends with a few of the male teachers who also went to these parties (as did other male friends of hers). Several of the girls had relationships with her male friends and it was a sort of 'open secret' that this included teachers at the school. One of the girls married the PE teacher a quite soon after leaving. At the time I remember thinking it was a bit grim for someone my age to want to go out with a teacher but looking back I am shocked to think that none of the other staff or the girls' parents (it was all pretty open, so I think they all knew) raised a concern

FirstnameSuesecondnamePerb · 25/05/2023 21:11

Oh yes.
At least 2 whilst they were fifth form/lower sixth, so Year 11 and 12.
One went on to live with him this was 1985/86.

Rinkydinkydoodle · 25/05/2023 21:11

Just the one, this would have been mid to late nineties. Teacher was late twenties, she was one year older than I was when I clocked she used to spend every lunchtime in his class, making her fourteen. Not saying it started then but in retrospect ya do wonder 🤔

AlyssumandHelianthus · 25/05/2023 21:12

Ew! None! 80s/90s state Catholic school.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 25/05/2023 21:14

70s, one sixth former had been living with a teacher since she started in 6th form. That was it.
However-in my family one woman married her teacher in the 40s and her daughter her head of6th form (late 60s-still married)

Isitthathardtobekind · 25/05/2023 21:17

Left in 98. One definitely. Started not long after she left 6th form and he was quite a bit older.

Ponderingwindow · 25/05/2023 21:26

Left in 92.
one teacher and student married from my time at school. She was 17/18 and he was only 22/23. They claimed they didn’t start dating until after graduation. None of us believed that then.

as a more experienced adult, I can imagine that they did Technically stick to the rules, an emotional affair of sorts. Allowing a friendship to be too close given the circumstances of their meeting and starting relationship.

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 25/05/2023 21:26

Head teacher was sent to jail for sex with a minor. He was having an affair with the mother too. 79 I think

Taytocrisps · 25/05/2023 21:50

One. It was the '80s. I head they got married a few years later.

99point6 · 25/05/2023 21:53

None from my year group that I know of but 2 in years above. Male PE teacher and former head girl. Deputy head English teacher married ex pupil after she graduated - 20 year plus age gap.
Early 90s.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 25/05/2023 21:58

Two and one jailed for abuse of a friend at school which I didn’t know about until recently.

purplepencilcase · 25/05/2023 21:59

Yep, a girl in the year above me married the maths teacher.
Gross!!

Lostinplaces · 25/05/2023 22:00

Left 99. None that I know of.

thewillowbunnies · 25/05/2023 22:01

1 in my high school - married a girl in the L6 as soon as she turned 18.

IN my 6th form, our teacher arrived having been 'asked to leave' from his previous school for 'going out ' with a girl in the 6th from. He was about 35 at that time. Married her.
