How Many Of Your Senior School Teachers Went On To Marry Their Students?

How many of your senior school teachers had inappropriate 'relationships' with students or went on to marry them?

To my knowledge 3 male teachers at my school went on to marry students. 2 others had 'relationships' with 6th form girls. It wouldn't surprise me if there were more but I just don't know about them. This was in the late 80s / early 90s. Nobody was sacked but one left of his own accord and carried on teaching.

Was this common?

He was in his late 40s early 50s even then.

Calibrachoa · 25/05/2023 19:43

None I don't think, but I remember going shopping with a friend from another school in the 80s and she saw a teacher from her school with a sixth former in a shop.

BillyNighysWife · 25/05/2023 19:45

3 of my teachers had relationships with pupils. One was arrested and went to prison. I feel like this because it was with boys and somehow at the time this was felt to be more unacceptable. Male students with female students somehow seemed normal.Another one was a friend of mine who went on to marry and have children with him. They have grandchildren now. This was in the late 70s/early 80s.

A girl in my year was sleeping with the drama teacher. She was 14 or 15. Another girl was having a very inappropriate relationship with the DJ who ran the kids disco. She was 12. He also ran a children's club, think sports club. He later went on to father a child with a very young woman and beat her up when she tried to leave him.

maudesvagina · 25/05/2023 19:50

80s at least 3 had inappropriate sexual relationships with students

LindorDoubleChoc · 25/05/2023 19:54

My drama teacher (1981) was in a relationship with a former student.

My dd's music teacher (2012-2017) turned out to be in a relationship with a former student and I think now married. Dd was scandalised about it, as she should be.

TinyRebel · 25/05/2023 19:55

1990s. Off the top of my head…
Bus driver got a 15 year old pregnant. They got married the second she turned 16.
Head of humanities caught by the cleaner in a compromising position with a sixth former.
Music teacher got engaged to a sixth former.
Maths teacher had a baby with another teacher, they split up and not long after was quite openly going at it with one of the sixth form lads at a party (that might have shortly after he’d finished A-levels).
Oh, and the head of drama shagging one of her students’ dads. Two marriages broken there and her absolutely distraught DC still in sixth form.

1 is married to our old pe teacher. They as far as we know we're not together when she was at school though she had a HUGE crush on him. He got divorced the year we left they got together the year after so it was uncomfortably close imo.

However, it's been more than 30 years and they are still together and their age gab will be similar to mine and dhs (7) just i didn't know dh when we were 14 and 21 and didn't have a teen crush on him...

ArbitraryHaddock · 25/05/2023 19:58

A friend of mine married our music teacher, and a neighbour’s marriage broke up as a result of his “relationship “ with a sixth form student (he was a laboratory technician). When I was at school there were several teachers who we knew not to go into the store cupboard with, and the head of my DC’s primary school was sacked when he and the school nurse were discovered having sex in a car in the school car park after hours.

One teacher had famously (in local gossip) left his wife for a 6th former. They subsequently married. This took place in the 90s. He continued to teach. The fact that it was gossip was purely down to the fact that it was an affair - nobody was bothered about her age and student status.

Kitkattt · 25/05/2023 20:02

My uncle married an ex pupil of his. I’d say he was in his late 30s/40s and she was early 20s. They’ve been together 30 years I think. Since I was little.
I always knew he was her teacher but I didn’t really think about it until more recently.

DiscoBeat · 25/05/2023 20:02

A girl in my year had a relationship with our head of Music, I think it went on for a decade or so after we left school. She was older though (17 or 18).

TiredOfCleaning · 25/05/2023 20:07

I graduated High school in 1992. (Not from the UK)

My Year 10 teacher's third wife was in my class. His previous 2 wives had also beenm his students. One died by suicide.

I did not go to my latest HS reunion which was due during covid times but postponed until last year. He apparently did according to my school BF and was with his 5th wife who was also an ex student and younger than his children.

Our (male) headteacher at the time also had a habit of choosing his prey as the Year 12 head boys. Again the one in my year committed suicide just after we graduated in our HT's bathroom. HT soon after that moved to Thailand to run a school and a couple of years ago was in our lcoal papers because he was for being a paedophile.

Independent school and we all knew it was going on. Everyone gossiped about it but in some ways it was seen as a bit par for course.

CosmosQueen · 25/05/2023 20:07

None but it was a convent school, all girls and no male teachers (no lesbian relationships either as far as I know)

Maireas · 25/05/2023 20:12

None at all. I also went to a girls'convent school. There were two older men teachers, nothing improper ever happened. My friend went to the local mixed school for "a better experience" and ended up being groomed, in today's parlance, and had a relationship with the music teacher when she was 16.

HowDidWeGetHome · 25/05/2023 20:12

Yes, one of the teachers from my school who had an affair with a 6th former also ended up moving to Thailand and teaching there.

One that I know of (80s, private school).

AngryPurpleSleepingBag · 25/05/2023 20:15

3 that I can think of, all 3 turned into long happy (as far as I know) marriages. One was a female teacher male student. The others were the other way round. 90s. The age gaps still seem a bit weird. All seems very shocking retrospectively

Anoana · 25/05/2023 20:17

3 I think?

And one is still in jail, gets sent back every times he's released within days due to looking at sexual abuse images online.

Weatherwax13 · 25/05/2023 20:19

My exH. In his 40s
And yes it was abuse and he should've been arrested.
As it was I left the school and was pregnant and married at 17 after parent signed a consent form
This was 1990-ish

bobisbored · 25/05/2023 20:21

Not sure about marriage but my friend shagged the hot PE teacher when we were in sixth form. That was 90's. Obviously all hush hush!!

SomethingNastyInTheGenePool · 25/05/2023 20:23

None! Bloody hell! I left school in 1989.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 25/05/2023 20:26

One of my teachers. He was mid 20s, was dating someone from his previous school when he arrived and went on to get through a succession of sixth formers. No idea who he ended up with but he is a headmaster now.

trulyunruly01 · 25/05/2023 20:27
  1. Music teacher at my rough as can be south London comprehensive in the early 80s married a very talented ?cellist/violinist he had taught. Although it was never confirmed that the relationship had begun whilst she was still at school.
IJustHadToLookHavingReadTheBook · 25/05/2023 20:28

I lived with one of my secondary school teachers. Didn't seem so terrible at the time- we were together from when I was in the sixth form at 16 (he was 32)- but looking back he had known me since I was 11 and he was 27, so really creepy. And we did keep it a secret until I was 18, so it was something he couldn't be open about, even if it wasn't illegal. This was 2000, so prior to the 2003 law change.

We lived together from the time I was 19 until I was 22... when he cheated on me with another sixth former. I'm sad to report that he's still teaching and when I complained about him a few years later- in about 2009- his school (a different one to the one where we met) and the police weren't interested. Potentially they might take it more seriously now, but unsurprisingly it fucked me up quite a lot and I've had to do a lot of work to have a happy marriage and not be a total basket case, so I'm not too keen to dredge it back up.

Sadly he's definitely still teaching as of about a month ago, I saw something on his school's twitter with a photo of him directing a school play Confused I try and keep vague tabs on him as me and my now DH are both teachers and I've got tween daughters... not keen for any of us to end up as his colleague or pupil. He might be 50-plus now, but I'm fairly sure he's still a menace to society.
