Do you ever find yourself having to defend your snobby interests? (light hearted)

....which are actually far from snobby? I'm an ordinary working class girl, and I happen to like classical music. I am currently being driven insane by Capital radio in the office at work, including bloody Capaldi seven times a day. But if I dared to suggest having a change to Classic FM, or, god forbid, Radio 3, I'd be seen as 'posh' or a snob, or just plain weird. I'm really not! Is this just me? Am I so unusual?! What do you have to defend yourself for?

No - definitely not just you!

Damnspot · 25/05/2023 14:52

I don't defend any of them. Why would I?

Yeppery · 25/05/2023 14:53

Hunting.

Dacadactyl · 25/05/2023 14:54

Also liking classical music. I also find myself explaining why I listen to Asian radio stations in my car (I'm white) I just really like the music.

DelurkingAJ · 25/05/2023 14:56

I am at the posher end (by upbringing and based on how others tell me I come across). I felt such relief the first time I started a job where I didn’t have to watch myself to avoid coming across as uppity. I feel for you!

Danascully2 · 25/05/2023 14:58

Not so much me but my primary age son has several niche interests that might well make people think I'm a pretentious/posh pushy parent - was totally his idea to join/take an interest in them and I haven't spent any money on any of it at all!

GirlySwot73 · 25/05/2023 14:59

Yes @Dacadactyl my kids have Asian radio on the telly on an evening sometimes and they love it! Especially the Simran (I hope that's the correct name for it)

I dont bother defending them because I don't really care what people think.

I have a mix of 'snobby and 'low class' interests and I enjoy them shamelessly XD

Zippedydoo123 · 25/05/2023 15:00

I listen to radio 4 and I do get the occasional comment but not often. If people cannot appreciate well spoken English and intelligent discussion it is their own lookout. Lol.

GirlySwot73 · 25/05/2023 15:00

@Danascully2 my ds15 is coming to do work experience with me soon, and I know he'll hate the music. His favourite is Jazz FM 😀

Radio 4 in the car while carpooling. Workmate always asks 'do you never listen to music?'. Well, yes I do, but I don't like the inanity of DJ chat. We occasionally have the likes of greatest hits radio or radio 2 on at work. Drives me quietly to distraction.

@Zippedydoo123 Yep. if anyone asks what I have on in the car, it's either tell them the truth Radio 4, or make something up to avoid the comments. I tell them the truth! Take it or leave it 😆

I rarely watch TV. I prefer to read. Apparently that's wierd.

PaperNests · 25/05/2023 15:06

I preserve my home grown organic quinces into quince paste. I don't tell anyone at work this because I get enough stick for 'wasting time' growing and preserving any fruit in the first place when jam is cheaper in the shop. There's really nothing posh about quince, although they are a beautiful tree.

GirlySwot73 · 25/05/2023 15:08

@PaperNests I salute you!

I have to defend not liking Love Island and the like at work. And not being into Harry Potter, a book written for ten year olds 🤷🏻‍♀️

LOL - My mum is exactly the same. But she doesn't read. And she didn't hothouse me.

If my mum asks me what book I'm reading and I tell her, she'll say "Is that a crime thriller?"

It never is. I hate crime thrillers.

I'll say "No, I don't like crime thrillers" and she'll act like I've just punched a kitten. She once asked me "Don't you ever read anything normal?"

I was reading Ngozi Adiche at the time. Pretty mainstream I'd say.

Mmm. Low-brow shite

Anoana · 25/05/2023 15:12

Actually took a total pasting on here once for saying I don't like Harry Potter. I'm a massive snob apparently for being an adult and liking adult books.

crackofdoom · 25/05/2023 15:15

Not liking Pontins. It's not snobby or elitist to do so, given that I'd prefer to stay in a very simple campsite with a tap, a toilet block and some nature around me, it's just that I can't stand bright lights, amplified shite discordant music, enforced jollity and loud drunk people who I'd be scared would start on me for being "posh" 🙄.

Nb: am not posh. Am autistic. It's an accusation a surprising number of autistic people get levelled at them though.

Sounds daft but my bloody accent!!
I don't even have a posh accent (in my eyes!) but because I live in a place where most people have a quite strong accent I'm constantly labelled 'posh' because of how I speak 😂 drives me insane. All I do it pronounce my 't's

Catspyjamas17 · 25/05/2023 15:23

Change jobs. They sound like immature idiots.

Harry Potter books are for kids not adults. I see the loving off of this shit as the emperor’s new clothes ie they all have to pretend it’s great. It’s not. Unless you’re a child
