Do you ever find yourself having to defend your snobby interests? (light hearted)

....which are actually far from snobby? I'm an ordinary working class girl, and I happen to like classical music. I am currently being driven insane by Capital radio in the office at work, including bloody Capaldi seven times a day. But if I dared to suggest having a change to Classic FM, or, god forbid, Radio 3, I'd be seen as 'posh' or a snob, or just plain weird. I'm really not! Is this just me? Am I so unusual?! What do you have to defend yourself for?

I feel quite lucky, from reading this thread, that I have a wide range of low to high brow interests and tastes and can talk to and mix with almost anyone. If I don't like something, I don't assume my view is superior and I'm often curious to know why someone else loves it.

Well most people do, it's just that this thread is about what people perceive to be the high brow stuff.

TFZ9287 · 25/05/2023 18:34

People think I'm strange because I cannot stand going to Primark!

ontheplayground · 25/05/2023 18:50

I love pretty much all the "highbrow" arty/literature stuff (apart from ballet - so dull that I would chew my own arm off rather than sit through another one).

DH says I'm like Frasier Crane. This is not intended as a compliment.

I wish I knew you in real life as I would love to try quince paste.

Me too- if only we could meet people with common interests as easy in real life. I hate all the social media platforms, but had to join FB to find fellow hobbyists and I rarely go on so I miss so many things I’d probably enjoy. Sadly, I think so many traditional interests are perceived as a marker of class, when that’s really not the case anymore.

@Allthegoodnamesarechosen - I have kept hens for over 20 years and have unfortunately lost some to foxes. I still find the idea of fox hunting barbaric.

It's inefficient and cruel. Our farmers would throw a fit if the hunt cross their land. Some don't have a choice unfortunately, but they really dislike them.

Our farmers organise a shoot if it becomes a serious problem as in urban foxes from cities being dumped here poor buggers riddled with mange with no idea how to hunt for themselves so they scavage around farms and cottages in the village

And shooting has proved a terrible way to cull foxes. Shooters killing vixens leaving cubs to starve to death.

Hunts don't kill foxes with hounds anyway these days. Hence the huge rise in the fox population.

I a still angry about my High School, yearbook. (3o plus years ago). For some reason the school decided to encourage one of the more wayward boys to edit the HS yearbook as a way (i assume) of getting him invested in the school when he was not. This boy really disliked me because I told him off once for being a macho idiot (when he was being a macho idiot).

One of the question you had to answer was what was your favourite music or musician, I said anything by Beethoven. I ADORE Beethoven. I went to music school for my first degree.

Somehow that got published as 'Tired of Cleaning - what is your favourite music? 'Beethoven. No, just joking, I'm not a total loser'.

I am still fucking furious about it. It made me look like such a dick.

gogohmm · 25/05/2023 19:20

I stopped caring what others thought when i was still at school. I have very diverse tastes - in the last month I've been to Badminton (definitely upper class) and motorbike racing (definitely not!) I can't be pigeonholed. I suppose we are upper middle class by income and dps job but who cares - I like a night down the pub drinking beer with the local football team!

gogohmm · 25/05/2023 19:21

Ps never seen an episode of love island, I'm a celebrity or Britain's got talent!

I joined a facebook group for over 60s to go out in a group. Unfortunately I never wanted to go to the local chain pub for burgers or see the latest blockbuster movies. And no one wanted to visit the museums, theatres or independent bars that I suggested. I’m just a weirdo, but I’m luckily happy enough alone.

I’m pretty sure I live no where near you but I’d enjoy going out with you if we lived close by to each other.

Aww @PollyThePixie . I’m sure I’d like to go out with you, too. I’m in central east Scotland

Greenfairydust · 25/05/2023 19:25

I could not care less what people think.

My interests are horse riding, reading and art. I never watch TV.

Some people probably think I am a wanky weirdo ...so what?

Greenfairydust · 25/05/2023 19:33

@Allthegoodnamesarechosen

''It is when you have seen what a fox does in a hen house ( or when you see how the horses and dogs adore being out together)''

Cats also kill birds for fun... are you going to hunt them to?

Fox hunting is against the law. End of story.

I am actually a fan of trail hunting but I want to see an end of it being used as a smokescreen to still hunt foxes.

The horses and the dogs can still enjoy their time together without a fox needing to be torn to shreds...

Well the RSPB use contractors with guns, traps and dogs on foxes and crows. It's not Disney land here

Are the Welsh snobs preferring rugby to football 😄😄

Trail hunting is not against the law. I haven't seen a single fox out while out hunting for about 10 years. Just go for a good gallop across country and jump big hedges then come home.

Actually took a total pasting on here once for saying I don't like Harry Potter. I'm a massive snob apparently for being an adult and liking adult books.

It’s because most people on here take not likening Harry Potter as a personal attack on JK. We can still like her views on women while thinking her books are utter populist dross.

Oh yes the deification of JKR on here is quite something. My kids like the films. I remember reading one to dc2 and being shocked at how derivative and poorly written it was. Still, she must have done something right ££££££££

Radio 4 & a lot of French music from Edith Piaf to French Rap (am not French - I speak franglaiseBlush)

Do you like Indochine, or Mickey 3D?

frozendaisy · 25/05/2023 19:58

The only event I have been to that was truly posh was polo. Everything else is not polo.

BadNomad · 25/05/2023 20:10

Do you only enjoy classical music? I don't think I've ever known someone have a singular interest when it comes to music.

I never defend myself over anything I like. I like what I like. I have a friend who thinks I'm "fancy" for eating avocados. And I have another friend who is horrified that I buy my avocados in Tesco, not from some organic, free-range avocado breeder. I don't even know where posh avocados are sold. M&S? Harrods? I don't care.

crackofdoom · 25/05/2023 20:16

Inverse food snobbery really grinds my gears. "Oooh...houmous, la di da!" Well, it's a damn sight cheaper than your bacon, and less likely to give me bowel cancer to boot.

CharlottenBurger · 25/05/2023 20:31

@crackofdoom

"Oooh...houmous, la di da!"

I have been known to make very cutting responses to remarks of that kind.

pollykitty · 25/05/2023 20:33

It’s interesting I usually feel defensive about my non snobby interests like my love of crappy cozy mysteries (tv and books) and the hallmark channel. I also love the ballet but no ine seems to find that funny. 🤷‍♀️

Thinkwicebeforeyouleavemylife · 25/05/2023 20:50

Yanbu for not wanting to listen to capaldi 😂 nothing against the bloke but his songs really are so depressing and he sounds like he has something stuck in his throat and needs to do a big cough 😂
