Do you ever find yourself having to defend your snobby interests? (light hearted)

....which are actually far from snobby? I'm an ordinary working class girl, and I happen to like classical music. I am currently being driven insane by Capital radio in the office at work, including bloody Capaldi seven times a day. But if I dared to suggest having a change to Classic FM, or, god forbid, Radio 3, I'd be seen as 'posh' or a snob, or just plain weird. I'm really not! Is this just me? Am I so unusual?! What do you have to defend yourself for?

@crackofdoom

"Oooh...houmous, la di da!"

I have been known to make very cutting responses to remarks of that kind.

People who do this in my house don't get invited back.

Do you mean people who say something you do is 'la di da' or those who make a cutting response when you say it? If the latter, I'm thinking of people I don't care about, not friends.

I think, especially with the inverse food snobbery, what pisses me off is the feeling of not being permitted to like nice things because it's somehow not knowing my place. Yes, I love delicious food from all different cultures, I make it myself- very easy to find out how nowadays what with the Internet and everything, and- guess what- being heavily vegetable and pulse based and cooked from scratch, it's cheaper than what you consider a no- nonsense, non poncey meal. It's usually the kind of thing that people on a low income in other countries would eat. I think what's considered snobby is that I have the knowledge of what all these different foods are. But it's knowledge that anyone could acquire very easily if they wanted!

I got called snooty when I said I like falafels and mezze. I think the person also thought I might be an ISIS sympathiser or some sort of traitor.

crackofdoom · 25/05/2023 21:45

Yeah, only terrorists like falafel 🤣

luckylavender · 25/05/2023 21:49

That I very rarely watch films - prefer to read. And that 99% of book adaptations are pale imitations of the book.

thecatsthecats · 25/05/2023 21:50

My in laws have wildly different cultural tastes to my family.

I had to explain to my parents what Gogglebox was when explaining how we're forced to watch it at the ILs.

So the ILs threshold for snobby is very different to mine :D I sort of think that to them, I'm the snobby girlfriend of Smithy in Gavin and Stacey in the Christmas episode (that we have only seen at their house).

luckylavender · 25/05/2023 21:52

Also my politics. I'm a woke lefty but I watch and read Right Wing stuff as I don't think you can be properly informed without trying to understand the other point of view. This makes me weird.

girlfriend44 · 25/05/2023 21:59

Capaldi has a crap voice. Don't blame you for wanting to listen to something better.

TheHandmaiden · 25/05/2023 22:21

@CharlottenBurger - I mean the people who claim it's la di da. I suppose they don't get out much but also what terrible manners.

It's extremely rude.

Spot on. I read all the papers too. We're both weird then 😄

Hunting.

Oh proper head over parapet time here!
I'll join you - I don't hunt anymore but did for years. My pasttime now is shooting and training my gundogs.

Mother87 · 26/05/2023 07:26

CharlottenBurger (sorry, don't know how to reply directly🤦🏻‍♀️) Am rubbish with the names of bands/singers - I know I like Diomay - and the other stuff is older Jean Jacques Goldman/Rita Mitsouko and the old stuff Françoise Hardy & new stuff like Carla Bruni

FreyaBentos · 26/05/2023 07:55

I’m regarded as posh/snobby at work for various daft reasons!!

Im not from the area so different accent… I read a lot so use big ‘posh’ words… I like watching and reading about forensic science, not Love Island… I don’t do FB, Insta, Snapchat etc…

Im certainly not posh, working class upbringing but was taught how to behave ‘nicely’

Fuck. Will 'Prevent' be coming to get me?

I have Harissa in my fridge. I'm doomed.

Harissa AND hummus here. If I'm never heard from again I was dragged out by a SWAT team for diet deradicalisation.

My favourite harissa comes in tubes, the brand is 'Le Phare du Cap Bon', from Tunisia, I'd surely get arrested for that by Braverman's boys.

Anjanax · 26/05/2023 11:35

Literature. Art.

Such passions I keep to myself for the most part. Nobody I know is interested in these things. I live in a poor place economically and culturally.

However, I was furious when a friend nastily mocked my favourite artist for being ill - dropped her like a lead balloon.

But mostly I don’t mind not sharing - these are for the most part happily private enjoyable interests.

Olinguita · 26/05/2023 11:36

Another white person who listens to Asian radio stations here! I love my BBC Asian Network! People don't know what they are missing out on

GirlySwot73 · 26/05/2023 12:05

Having previously said I don't criticise others for what they like, I'm breaking that one today! They're all singing along with exactly the same songs that were on yesterday and sharing a picture of something disgusting asking each other if they would do it for a million pounds. This subject comes up aaaaall the time and they think it's hilarious. And I'm the weird boring one?????!!!!!!! 😩

I've got 'plain' harissa AND the rose kind AND the apricot kind...
I'm probably going to get deported.

I really find this sort of stuff leaves me cold. Its not snobbery, I don't judge anyone for it. I'm pleased for them that they are having a nice time. But, just like tatoos, it leaves me cold. I don't get it. So apparently I can come across a bit snobby. I really don't think it's me doing the judging though.

crackofdoom · 26/05/2023 14:25

Charlottenburger
I just finished the last of my Phare du Cap Bon harissa the other day and we're not planning to go to France this year so I can't stock up 😱 Bereft.

Right, looks like I'm going to Morrisons for my summer holiday then!
