Do you ever find yourself having to defend your snobby interests? (light hearted)

....which are actually far from snobby? I'm an ordinary working class girl, and I happen to like classical music. I am currently being driven insane by Capital radio in the office at work, including bloody Capaldi seven times a day. But if I dared to suggest having a change to Classic FM, or, god forbid, Radio 3, I'd be seen as 'posh' or a snob, or just plain weird. I'm really not! Is this just me? Am I so unusual?! What do you have to defend yourself for?

Right, looks like I'm going to Morrisons for my summer holiday then!

Oops I’ve just seen it’s meant to be light-hearted! (I’m kinda serious about what really interests me so probably posted by mistake)

Nicky Haslam goes straight for the jugular in his annual tea towel list of things “Nicky Haslam finds common”.

Camilla Long did a fantastic article about it in The Tines a couple of years ago!

I have to say I agree with him 99.9% (except for the one about hating having your photo taken- I still hate it!)

Maybe this is better photo?. He’s pretty bang on. Does a new one every year apparently:)

And last but not least …

The last one I agree with all especially “women’s hour”! - thought I wouldn’t pass on “intensely private people” and “scarves”. Oh well.

Anjanax · 26/05/2023 16:18

And I use exclamation marks!

I find NH a pain in the arse, personally. Some of these are surely just to be provocative or silly (loving your parents/Coloured bath towels/Minding about smoking/Being on time/Sorbets).

Then again, he'd find me unimaginably common, seeing as I grew up in a Barrett house, went to a sink comprehensive, watched wall-to-wall ITV at home and say 'garidge' not 'gar-aaage'.

I can't say as I'm losing sleep over it.

crispinglovershighkick · 26/05/2023 17:42

I love live opera and haven't watched new or terrestrial TV for about 10y. I don't have to defend exactly but I squirm a little about both, like it makes me sound like I want people to see me in a certain way.
I was an odd, quiet, thoughtful child and kids were horrible to me, so possibly hypersensitive about anything that might mark me out as aloof or a snob.

crispinglovershighkick · 26/05/2023 17:52

Those Nicky Haslam tea towels😁

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 26/05/2023 17:57

I live in Denmark but omg if you tell anyone in Jutland that you're going to see the Royal Danish Ballet then you get met with silence, and possibly a single "Nåh". What I find really weird is that they can all name Danish companies that are international, but try telling them that anyone who knows anything about ballet knows the RDB and its always new information.

But then when I mention rhobh I get the same reaction. So snobbery definitely goes both ways.

I'm a Monday night TV quiz addict.... Mastermind (have been a contestant a couple of years back), Only Connect and University Challenge. I can't bear the majority of other quiz shows, especially the incredibly low-brow onslaught presented by 'cheeky chappies' that seem to be the latest format. Snobby maybe but hey ho...

GirlySwot73 · 27/05/2023 09:17

@DontBeBitterGlitter2023 Snap!!!! Monday night is my only time with the telly! If anyone at work is talking about what they have been watching, it's just easier for me not to mention OC and UC!

I like classical music and MAFSA. I keep quiet about both. 😂

Malbecfan · 27/05/2023 09:42

I have found my tribe! The Monday evening BBC2 binge is something I love.

Always Radio 3 on my drive into work as the inane twaddle of other stations winds me up. However, I love 5 Live on my way home. I play an instrument to a good standard and often play in concerts or shows. I'm not a massive opera fan, but I have seen a fairly eclectic mix of them live.

Despite living in the south of England, I am a northerner. I love football and go to see my team as often as money and logistics allow. I don't understand the rugby they play down here, but I really like rugby league and have been to live matches. I love Gogglebox, but I can't stand Britain's Got Talent, X factor, Love Island or any of those vacuous "celebrations of mediocrity".

Because of my northern vowels, I am not perceived as snobby, which is hilarious when I'm engaged in a debate about whose 5th symphony is best: Beethoven, Schubert, Bruckner, Mahler or Shostakovich....

GirlySwot73 · 27/05/2023 12:25

@Malbecfan Yyyyeeesssssss!!!! 👏👏👏😊

I often get comments at work / work events because I don't drink instant coffee. I have a filter that goes on top of my mug at work and take coffee bags (as better than nowt) to events. People make comments about it, then start drooling as soon as the smell of real coffee hits their nostrils.

My reading of history books for fun often attracts bemused comments.

I find watching Goggle Box helps me make tv small talk / follow work conversations (& is pretty funny) for big shows esp "reality" tv series - though they don't take up as much conversation as 5-10 years ago.

My favourite harissa comes in tubes, the brand is 'Le Phare du Cap Bon', from Tunisia, I'd surely get arrested for that by Braverman's boys.

Sorry to say mine is Waitrose 😅

Hunting.

I don't think it's that people think you are a snob.

People don't like others who chase and kill animals for fun!

It's the 'for fun' bit that I find bemuses people. Ditto 'because I enjoy them and find them interesting.'

I think you’re missing the point. It’s meant to be humorous but also Haslam’s tea towels are not about being poor, or how you pronounce garage but more about being too try-hard middle-class twee (which is actually ‘common’ in his eyes I think). It’s about artifice, too much effort and snobbery that misses the mark. Perhaps shades of hyacinth bucket? Baby showers comes to mind as a top example.

That said I am probably guilty of a few of them myself, due to a certain self consciousness perhaps. And self-consciousness is probably common 😂!
