Well I have plan at least.

  1. Sell this house
  2. Buy little house
  3. Give notice at current job.
  4. Find remote PT job
  5. Earn enough to cover outgoings (no mortgage thankfully)
  6. Spend my time doing what makes me happy.

I'm not spending what time I have left bloody working full time. The time between now and retirement will just be wasted years.

Wish me luck! Adventures here I come Grin

Update if anyone is intetested......

The house will be on the market next Thursday and I'm off to the Isle of Skye at the weekend. I will be 55 on Saturday. I'm hoping this time next year my plan will have come to fruition.

All the very best

declutteringmymind · 19/07/2023 22:24

irishmist23 · 20/07/2023 20:44

Well done. Please post updates occasionally on how things are going - really lovely to read about your adventure whilst I'm wading through my own life.
It's amazing - good for you!

Strugglingtodomybest · 21/07/2023 14:40

Thanks for the updates, keep 'em coming please, this thread has inspired me to have a serious think about my future, and yesterday I paid off some of my mortgage.

I love the micro caravan photos too! We have a large motorhome ourselves, too large now for just the two of us, so I'm thinking we could downsize that and then go off travelling for a few months of the year.

Amboseli · 22/07/2023 15:21

Good for you! Enjoy 😊

Spinnakerser · 22/07/2023 21:35

Congratulations! Me and my mr retired at 55 and 58 and love it, we both have private pensions, DH has a work pension and mine will kick in at 65. We travel as much as we can and live fairly simply the rest of the time, both have hobbies that keep us busy and we never miss our work. Still in touch with a fewfolk we worked with but really do not miss all the stress. Enjoy your break from work and all the new adventures in store, you wont regret it.

4weeknoalcohol · 23/07/2023 10:23

Congratulations and now you are getting married you can plan your financial future together too in the knowledge you have made a lasting commitment. You only live once. I’m hoping to take my pension at 50 next year husband already took his at 51. Like you we want to downsize, feel free and travel. Bon voyage 🛳️

Fushia123 · 23/07/2023 10:29

Congratulations! Love your positive outlook on life - he must too!
Keep us posted.

JMAngel1 · 23/07/2023 10:38

Congratulations - how exciting - love your attitude to life.

Restinggoddess · 23/07/2023 11:01

Congratulations to you both
A new zest for life

So many people in their 50s are stressed and unappreciated at work - something is very wrong with the way workplaces have evolved.
We retired at 57 and 60 - could not take another day of the crap
Dont miss it at all - in fact life is so busy I can’t think how we fitted in the time to work
Please keep the updates coming as to where you explore and how it goes - and even if there is a moment you think WTAF did we do - it passes and your new life continues to evolve

Enjoy yourself it’s later than you think

Strugglingtodomybest · 23/07/2023 11:03

Congratulations OP!

3BSHKATS · 23/07/2023 11:08

I have always said 55 is about the right age to retire. I can’t believe we’re being forced to wait to 57 as a minimum. Realistically, I think I’m gonna have to hold out until I’m 60. My grandad died at 62 with my Nan at 72 so yay.

Question for those of you downsizing to flats.

I'd like to do this but the freehold and service charge aspects concerns me. I'm worried about only owning the flat not the land it's on.

I'm also concerned about the service charge massively increasing.

I'd love to know what other posters think of these issues.”

The flat we are downsizing to is freehold, every flat in the block is (Scotland). service charges are considerably less than we pay for everything they cover compared to the large house we are leaving and they include water and sewerage.

greyhairnomore · 23/07/2023 14:14

How exciting

Amboseli · 23/07/2023 16:15

Congratulations! It gets better and better!

PlainJanePerfect · 23/07/2023 16:30

Your adventure sounds great! I'm a late bloomer with kids. Just turned 40 and my IVF which seemed like it failed turned out positive. Its early- but sticking so far.
We will be 59ish when kids are finishing school but I'm not working a day over 60. You only live once! Best of luck on the moves, the travels and your engagement!
