About 2 days ago I discovered that Skegness isn’t in Scotland 😳 How did I never know this before? Embarrassingly, I’m 38 😂

I have laughed so much though! Thank you

Grace8547 · 26/05/2023 07:34

What???? Mind blown!

Lullibyebye · 26/05/2023 07:34

I didn't realise TIA at the end of posts meant thanks in advance. I thought there was a woman on mumsnet called Tia who started loads of threads. I realised when I started browsing reddit. Should have been paying attention to usernames!

This thread is proof that the British education system is one of the worst in the world!

The Conservatives have a lot to answer for........

What nonsense... It's one of the best.
Why do you think people come from oall over the world to get a British education...?

It isn't here to teach general knowledge.

I'd be worried if a school was teaching you things like where small market towns are or that cling film boxes sometimes have tabs in them or the common misheard lyrics...

I had no idea that Brunei was in Borneo - I had always assumed it was in the Middle East somewhere.

I thought that too 😳

Omg is it actually?! Jeez I’m 41 🙈

Oldnproud · 26/05/2023 08:03

We had new windows fitted about 8 years ago. I have hated them, because the panel that opens is so close to the frame when open that it is impossible to get an arm out to wash it (upstairs).

I learnt recently that when it is open, by pressing in the right places on the hinge mechanism, it can be slid along a few inches, making a gap just the right size for sticking an arm through to wash it.
I'm still hoping to learn that there is a secret way of doing something similar with the larger fixed panel though,

I was at a meeting where a teacher in her 30s said Greece was a holiday resort in Hawaii.

:)
the human mind is a truly wondrous thing. There must surely be a curious reason behind that being planted in the teacher's mind?
Great thread OP - Brunei? - oh my god - and I've even been to the Brunei Gallery at least a couple of times - must admit to being somewhat amazed/depressed by folks not knowing where Dunkirk is (history?) - a tad less by odd ideas about Brit geography - can't help wondering if many of the UK geographically challenged might be parochial southerners.

I’m laughing so much about some of these. Things have moved on a bit but going back to ‘You’re So Vain'…..why would said vain man be dancing a gavotte?? Did he live in the 18th century? In that case, how come he had a Lear jet?

So many questions….

While we're on You're So Vain, does anyone know what it is he flew up to Nova Scotia? I always thought it was 'your living', maybe meaning all his family and entourage, but it doesn't make much sense.

His lear jet... to see the total eclipse of the sun

Another line I had wrong 😂

WestendVBroadway · 26/05/2023 08:51

@Jugglingtwokidsandadog I am not sure if anyone remembers back in the late 80s when they made separate disposable nappies specifically for girls or boys. My friend (early 20's) asked me what the difference was. I suggested that perhaps they were more absorbant in difference places eg girl's one in the middle, but boy's more to the front. I have no idea really anyway friend asked why this would be, so I explained that perhaps the little willy's were pointing up a little. She was literally gobsmacked because she thought boys weed from the same place as girls, and a penis was purely for sex.🤣🤣

isthismylifenow · 26/05/2023 08:53

Sorry repeating, I was behind with the replies @Fink

The whole song is just quite confusing tbh.

Yacht, apricot (who says it like that anyway....), gavotte, again pronounced wrong as to rhyme.

And how to you walk onto a yacht? Barefoot usually would be my guess.

Re he watched himself gavotte...

Here is the term I found on Google

"a courtly dance for couples and groups of people and includes small hops"

He must have looked a right plonker watching himself hop in the mirror.

😂

Until recently, I thought Silicon Valley was so called because there were so many people there who had had plastic surgery.🤔

😂Understandable mistake though!!

I will , I actually think if it as basic knowledge and everyone should . There is no pride in being dumb

It’s also basic knowledge that you don’t need a space before a comma or a full stop. Go to the back of the class and write out 109 times “Knowing where Pontefract is won’t change my life”.

... although Captain von Trapp manages to pull off hopping around in the Ländler in the Sound of Music and still look hot.

I have long thought (and have not changed my mind despite the recent revelations that I have essentially misheard most of the lyrics) that the genuis of You're So Vain is that at least one person (I'm not sure it was only written about one man, maybe it was a combination) probably does think it's about him and is right, but he can't admit it because it would be admitting to vanity. I love it!

On misheard song lyrics, I grew up thinking that Knights in White Satin was a song about imitating the chivalrous behaviour of medieval times, a bit like the Glory of Love (a much later song, but both came out before I was concious of music so in my mind they were both 'old' songs).

I only recently discovered that Tommy used to work on the docks. I always thought it was Johnny. It has made be question everything....

Me too - and I thought that Gina was to die of old age...

CharlottenBurger · 26/05/2023 10:04

@Fink

" I grew up thinking that Knights in White Satin was a song about imitating the chivalrous behaviour of medieval times" -

er, you do know it's 'Nights in White Satin'?

Not knowing the (big) difference between silicon and silicone?

WomanStanleyWoman2 · 26/05/2023 10:06

JFDIYOLO · 26/05/2023 01:10

It's duck tape, not duct tape. Because duck is a kind of fabric which is the backing to the sticky layer.

Also pterodactyls were not dinosaurs.

Nope. Duck Tape is a brand of duct tape.

I was embarrassingly old when I discovered that Sinn Fein is not a person.

No way - I assumed it was just British vs American spelling!

innocentfun · 26/05/2023 10:16

peter o' toole wasn't irish.
bloody yorkshireman.

Somewhat surprised I never bumped into him in one of those godawful fake oirish pubs that used to litter london and around.
