Apparently most people have 6 meals they make on a loop? How about you?

Some random study I read.

It's probably about right..

stirfry
fajitas
a roast of some kind (not every week)
salmon and veg
sea bass with veg
fishfingers chips and peas (or similar)
a curry - usually prawn.

Wow!
I'm shocked.
And depressed.

We generally go at least 2 months without repeating meals (with possible exception of spag bol or chilli).

I go through phases of ticking off meals on a list and a rough count on that list is over 60 variations.
I can't imagine eating the same each week.

this is interesting! I’ve never thought about it before outside of the ‘what shall I put in trolley’ question. These are what are on regular rotation in our house!

lasagna (with salad and dauphinois pots)
cottage pie with veg
curry and rice
chilli and chips
sunday roast (chicken or beef with seasonal veg and Yorkshire puds etc)
Chicken fajitas (I usually do nachos, mac and cheese and a blue cheese salad as well and have a tex mex themed meal)
Beef or fish taco with salad
pizza (frozen I’m afraid)
chicken nuggets/fish fingers/mash and peas (beige meal but they are always in the freezer)
spanish omelette with roasted veg
pork gyros
salmon and steamed veg or stir fried veg
corned beef, egg and chips (how very un mumsnet of me)
beef burgers with whatever potato and veg i have to hand
pie and mash with mixed veg

Yes, I have a rotating menu (14 day). The threads on here for menus has been really helpful and has taken my anxiety away that I should be able to create a different meal for 365 days of the year😁Tonight was supermarket 'filled' pasta, with a ready made tomato and chunky vegetable sauce and salad.

I meal plan & have just read through my previous 3 weeks plans. I stopped when I got to 17 different meals as it's obvious I don't revisit the same few recipes! Did you want ideas, op?

And I can't imagine keeping a list of meals and ticking them off as I go along Confused

My husband would die for this meal plan! Very hungry now.

Georgyporky · 24/05/2023 19:04

My grandparents did this, lamb chops Monday, sausages Tuesday etc. - always with spuds & something green from the garden
Even my DM (world's worst cook) didn't !

Apart from the mindless ease of a Sunday roast ( & that rotates between 5 meats), I reckon I don't repeat meals within a month. And also aim to try at least one new recipe per week

InSpainTheRain · 24/05/2023 19:26

On my own just 3-4 and I often resort to scrambled eggs or cheese on toast. But I have Mindful Chef every week with 3-4 in - magic!

bluegreenredyellow · 24/05/2023 19:27

God yes and it drives me mad.

Lasagne.
Bolognese
Cottage pie
Chicken and veg
Pasta bake

And repeat.

Season0fTheWitch · 24/05/2023 19:28

Chicken caesar salad
veg soup
Stir fry/chow mein/pad thai
Spag bol
Pie, mash, veg
tacos
gyros

Also always homemade bread and a crumble or similar every night available. We eat quite a varied diet but these are my go-tos I know the kids will eat

LuluBlakey1 · 24/05/2023 19:33

Range of soups
Veg stew and veg dumplings
Veggie or quorn chilli
Veggie/quorn lasagne
Macaroni cheese
Several homemade baked pasta dishes
Quorn fajitas and side dishes
Risotto

DH makes curries and pizzas

Plus we have baked potatoes with various fillings
Omlettes
Big salads with meals

Georgyporky · 24/05/2023 19:37

"Big salads with meals"
But salads are always "massive" on MN, doncher know !

If I lived by myself I would live on scrambled eggs with cheese, on toast. Cheese on toast with tinned or grilled tomatoes. Toasted sandwiches and bakedpotatoes. With salads or baked beans and an occasional macaroni cheese.

tourdefrance · 24/05/2023 19:43

lasagne
chicken pie
beef pie
chilli
salmon risotto
salmon with creamy onions and pasta
curry - fish / chicken / seafood
salmon and pommes dauphinoise or sauté potatoes
bbq
meatballs
sketty

kids only

jacket potatoes
fishfingers and chips
fajitas
mushroom pasta sauce
toad in hole
pizza

longer than expected!

JaninaDuszejko · 24/05/2023 19:48

I can believe that, cooking is a necessary chore for most people.

We do way more than that but I do have about 100 cookbooks and grew up in a family obsessed with food (Dad was a farmer and so we regularly ate meals where we'd produced everything on the farm and Mum taught cookery). We talk about food a lot, if someone goes out for a meal there would be a 20 minute conversation the next day about what they ate.

I know I'm at an extreme but I still had severe cultural shock when I met SIL and she'd been out with friends the night before and I said 'Oh, what did you have to eat?' and she looked confused and said 'em, I think we had fish' . That's like going to the theatre and not remembering if you've seen a comedy or a drama!

DinosApple · 24/05/2023 20:02

Yep, that's pretty much me.

Veggie curry,
Mexican chicken and roasted veg,
Freezer night
Jacket potato night
Pizza night - sometimes homemade.
Bolognese/chilli/veggie version night

Rhombus79 · 24/05/2023 20:13

We also have some favourites on repeat but I usually try at least 10 or so of Sainsbury's magazines' recipes every month for some variety. I'm not a very creative cook myself, so I have plenty of recipe books as well.

When my FIL was visiting from abroad for three months, I made it my mission to cook something different every day. MIL is a very good cook but not very adventurous, so we were happily eating ourselves through the world's cuisines. He thoroughly enjoyed it.

Gingerkittykat · 24/05/2023 20:15

Macaroni cheese
Pasta with some variation of tomato sauce i.e. lentil bolognese, turkey meatballs or veg.
Mushroom and bacon omelet with salad.
gammon steak, hm chips, and pineapple.
soups, normally Scottish lentil and bacon, potato and leek or minestrone.
All day breakfast (sausage, black pudding, egg, beans, mushrooms, tattie scones).
Egg fried rice with either chicken or ham and mixed veg.
Roast chicken.
Tarka dal, occasionally other curries.

I used to be really adventurous with cooking, I need to try more recipes again.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 24/05/2023 20:18

Roast pork with all the trimmings.
Fishcake or scampi and homemade chips with peas
Homemade lasagne and garlic bread.
Spaghetti bolognese.
Cottage pie
All day breakfast

Yes, although it does change slightly with the seasons.

On current rotation:

  • some kind of roast
  • prawn linguine
  • thai chicken curry
  • moroccan meatballs
  • fajitas
  • chicken ramen
  • pizza
gettingolderbutcooler · 24/05/2023 20:21

Curry
Spag Bol
Fajitas
Risotto
Chops
Chili
Roast chicken
Lemongrass and coriander chicken with creme fraiche
Salmon

DrFoxtrot · 24/05/2023 20:21

Great thread for inspiration! I like the sound of the harissa chicken and pepper traybake a PP mentioned.

I think we are very limited as I work about 50 hours a week, am a single parent and have elderly parents to do tasks for. I need things that are guaranteed to be eaten and easy to do.

Meatballs and spaghetti
Chicken curry (strength/ flavour does vary)
Sausage and mash
Chicken roast
Pizza
Chorizo pasta
Chicken wraps
Occasionally pasta with a random homemade sauce
Salads

I could quite easily eat the same thing most days. I do love food and variety but also need to just eat conveniently without too much stress. I eat a Greek salad nearly every day for lunch Blush

WesterChick · 24/05/2023 22:49

Yep that me

Pasta carbonara
Frozen steak pie and broccoli
Chicken curry and rice
Chilli with wraps and nachos
Salmon with broccoli and new potatoes
Frozen pizzas

Wow healthy Confused

WesterChick · 24/05/2023 22:50

I hate to be divisive but this thread is pure 'spot the SAHM' Wink
