What job would have a take home pay of approx £5k a month?

I’ve been trying to work something out and just wondered - what sort of job/career makes that’s sort of amount (5k per month / £60k per year actual take home amount)

The comprehension skills on this thread are just unbelievable.

I think all you lack any real world knowledge and it shows. None of them are close to being able to earn that amount individually based on what you say.
Have you had a look at the average earnings of a university graduate, for example? It’s no where near a £5k a month take home. As others have said, you’d need a salary of around £100k before deductions. They are largely unskilled and unqualified so they’re not able to just fall into a job like this.

Hell121 · 23/05/2023 23:02

I earn 65k and don’t clear 5k

op. I don’t think you have a clue! Well meaning I am sure but also, seriously naive!

they should look at some level 2/3 qualifications in fields they are interested in. These are often free. Start there with your local college.

I volunteer and they are the family I currently support. They mentioned work

You need to speak to your volunteer manager and learn about signposting to other services, not ask Mumsnet.

Prisonbreak · 23/05/2023 23:12

@homestartvolunteer he went to college straight from school and trained. He then worked as an employee for about 7 years and then decided to go self employed about 10 years ago. He does work extremely hard for it and doesn’t mess around so he earns very well. Others on the site can still earn 40k a year but often don’t turn up or leave early. Good money to be made for skilled labour

Omg how many times can people repeat this nonsense. Read the actual OP!!!!!!!!! 🙄I'm starting to think the OP could easily do most posters' jobs given that they can at least read and count

I have that’s what OP meant.

I did say to them to speak to CAB and their benefits advisor

I have that’s what OP meant.

She clearly meant £60K p/a NET PAY because she said £5K pcm.

Stripedbag101 · 23/05/2023 21:34

I think they might be pulling your leg. They clearly don’t want to work.

they must know your own circumstances and know you a)don’t earn anywhere near the amounts they are quoting and b) have no insight into career paths or benefits.

I assume you provide this support through a charity - go back and tell them you are being asked about high earning career paths by these people and you are not equipped to advise:

i assume you are giving support in relation to issues not related to work. Stick to the issues you are there to provide support on. This is not your wheel house.

you should be given more support to establish boundaries and signpost families to the most appropriate advisors

@homestartvolunteer this is good advice. Please talk to the people at the charity about this. It's really important you don't try to solve this by yourself.

Probably an honest mistake by someone who has never earned much above the basic rate of tax.

Higher rate of tax (40%) starts from around 50,000 and it starts to really hit around 100,000 when you start to lose the personal tax allowance. Pips begin to squeak around 125,000 at the additional rate of tax (45%).

By then, almost half of any pay increase is swallowed up in tax and NI.

Using BlossomBaby's tax calculator, to take home 5,000, you need to earn 88,000 but to take home 7,000 (40% more), you need to earn 140,000 (60% more) which is a greater rate of increase.

Badbudgeter · 23/05/2023 23:36

60K take home is 3.5K a month so to take home 5K you'd need to earn £89K a year plus pension bit more in Scotland.

Shakespeareandi · 23/05/2023 23:39

OP you sound lovely and keen to help. You didn't know what jobs could potentially pay £5K PCM so you asked mumsnet to get a general idea. All fine.
If it's 3 of them all wanting to work then that's great and jointly they can definitely achieve that a month.
As many PP have said, it takes years of career progression to get to a £100k salary. If ever. Senior management in civil service will be VERY senior to get that. As another PP pointed out, only 2% of earners make that kind of money.
But as they can all work, they will be fine going into jobs at entry level and working their way up if they so want to. Sounds like they are young as well, so time is on their side.

LuluBlakey1 · 23/05/2023 23:45

That's what DH's takehome is - Headteacher in large secondary school.

My man is a bricklayer. He earns a bit more than that

Bricklayer? On more than I get as a senior leader in a primary school??!

Not saying your hubby isn't worth is wages and I know it takes training but.. no wonder teachers are striking!

homestartvolunteer · 23/05/2023 19:24

What would it be then ? If someone gets £5k per calendar month ? I’d just x12 !! Maybe that’s the wrong way to calculate it

Google take home pay calculator.
Put in random figures and the cal will give you the gross salary.
So £88,000 take home = £88,000 gross. ( not accounting for pension contributions)

Which is why I taught myself to bricklay myself and plaster and built my own extension.

Senior nurse

No they don't! Nothing like it!

DidyouNO · 24/05/2023 00:47

We foster 1 special needs child and about to get another. That'll be £6.2k a month.

DidyouNO · 24/05/2023 00:49

Foster carers get a more generous tax bracket too.
