I’ve been trying to work something out and just wondered - what sort of job/career makes that’s sort of amount (5k per month / £60k per year actual take home amount)

Plenty of senior sales / marketing / finance / legal managers make more than £90k gross / £5k/mth net take home.

Stripedbag101 · 23/05/2023 21:19

The question should have been what is a realistic salary expectation and career path for an adult with some qualifications but limited/no work experience.

suggesting someone can walk into a £100k job is insane.

OP you sound well meaning but completely out of your depth. Why are these people trying to you for career advice? Why is your relationship to them?

it all sounds very odd.

I’m on 60k and I don’t even clear £3500 after tax and pension let alone 5k

I volunteer and they are the family I currently support. They mentioned work

Realistically they aren’t going to walk into a job where they take home 5k a month. Universal credit is available so time should look for a decent job but more realistic than earning so much

I think they might be pulling your leg. They clearly don’t want to work.

they must know your own circumstances and know you a)don’t earn anywhere near the amounts they are quoting and b) have no insight into career paths or benefits.

I assume you provide this support through a charity - go back and tell them you are being asked about high earning career paths by these people and you are not equipped to advise:

i assume you are giving support in relation to issues not related to work. Stick to the issues you are there to provide support on. This is not your wheel house.

you should be given more support to establish boundaries and signpost families to the most appropriate advisors

Nanny - particularly in London or overseas.

CatsOnTheChair · 23/05/2023 21:37

Google suggests the top 2% of UK workers (and there could well be more who take profits etc, but is a starting point) earn over 100k.
Having one worker get to that point is going to take a long time.
They would be much better off looking at each of them working - possibly one of the couple and the young adult nearly full time, with the other adult doing something with less hours to fit around the other 2.

peanutbutt · 23/05/2023 21:38

I'm a nurse and work for an ICB and earn just under 80k. Taken me years to get there though.

Anyone else also had a dawning realisation that even if they got to the 'top' of their line of work, £5k would still be a leap 😂 to get that in teaching I think I'd have to be the headteacher of a big secondary school and not pay into the pension to have £5k in my pocket a month. 4 years at uni and 15 years in the job and I'm absolutely miles away from that, should I even want to be.

Oh, sorry. I've just caught up on the thread.
You're asking for a £5k a month job that can just be walked straight into?
I doubt there are any.
My example of a Nanny would be for someone who's been doing private jobs for at least 5 years.
Starting salary is closer to £28k
And it wouldn't work well at all (certainly in the VIP sector) if someone had their own childcare commitments

Nothingisblackandwhite · 23/05/2023 21:42

Solicitor but only with quite a few years of experience , I imagine banking , some IT specific ones .
I’ve been a solicitor for 10 years (outside london ) and I still don’t clear close to 5 k after tax

Where do dental hygienists earn £100k?

Takeachance18 · 23/05/2023 21:51

Adult child needs to work out an area they would like to work in and start, if they have GCSE's or A levels, start looking for an apprenticeship (now is when more will be available for a September start), they will get training and paid at the same time.

The adults need to look at what they have done in the past, if both are working, they may also get 30 hours free childcare in term time. One of them or both could also look at apprenticeships. Between the 3 of them, they may be able to bring in £5000 a month in a short space of time.

OMG12 · 23/05/2023 21:54

To get that kind of job they would now almost invariably need degrees, many years of experience and probably several promotions.

How do they think the 98% of the population who don’t earn this manage to work with kids? Why does childcare need two adults?

They need to get realistic expectations, they all need to work, maybe different hours then they can cover childcare between them. Why are they getting benefits when they should be working.

AreMyDucksinarow · 23/05/2023 21:54

You don’t walk into a job paying 80-100k a year!

Im senior management in the construction industry and earn 3.5k a month after tax, ni and pension, I’d have to earn over 100k a year before I’d hit 5k…

Saying that mine and Dh take home salary is 6.5k a month so I guess we have the 5k jointly.

Neither of us walked into these jobs we’ve worked bloody hard to get here and done our fair share of shit jobs.

He'll take home more than 5k after tax per month if he's on 125

Midlander01 · 23/05/2023 22:04

Three individuals each earning £24,000 gross per year would take home - combined - £5,000 per month. With each taking advantage of their £12,500 tax free allowance.

As others have said, it should be perfectly doable for one adult to look after 2 toddlers while the other 2 work, and for all 3 to work around each other to avoid any childcare costs.

Finding three jobs which between them pay, on average, not much more than the living wage, sounds realistic.

Suggesting one adult out of a household of 3 walks into a full time job paying £90,000 gross with no skills or experience, is just ridiculous.
